Everyone lined up to kiss something the friar was holding after mass?

I was walking by a Church I never am near just before noon and I was like “oooh I can go say angelus before mass!” So I went in.

After mass the friar had this round gold thing and everyone lined up and kissed it and he wiped it off in between. What was that? I’ve never seen anything like that before. Is that a Capuchin thing?
 
Every lent my childhood parish ,before VatII ,had a Novena to St Francis Xavier
Jesuits would come and
the speaking was incredible.
It was packed every year even by children.
It would always be followed by a benediction with all the incense and chant
After which we all went up and kissed the relic of St Francis
I wrote this off as old fashion superstition but I really believe our church lost so much when it pretty much ended the practice

Hmm…It was after they said a novena… I was praying my own jawn when the mass was over so I wasn’t really paying attention to what they were doing.

Yesterday was the feast day of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, she is the first American saint to be canonized in the Catholic Church. Our priest had a relic of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and after Mass everyone walked up and kissed the relic. It sounds like that might be what happened in your Church.

I’m going to go back to this church today because it was our Mother Church when St John Neumann was Bishop of Philadelphia and today is his feast day. So this is where he worked and preached from. I’m pretty excited for that. Now that I understand what was happening yesterday I will participate more fully too.
