Go Braves!

I’m pretty sure there’s an article in the Catechism condeming use of the DH. I just haven’t found it yet.
I’ve never understood why they don’t just get rid of the DH and only use 8 hitters. That solution gets rid of the useless pitcher’s slot and also cuts back on the inflated offense created by the DH.

The Red Sox will be my penance this year…

How about those Tigers … 3-0 to start the season! Woot woot! :extrahappy:

Courtesy of the blog of Jason Beck, MLB.com’s Tigers reporter, here is a list of rare feats achieved in Sunday’s crazy 13-12, 11 inning win over the Red Sox:
  • According to Elias Sports Bureau, the Tigers overcame multi-run deficits in both the ninth inning and extra innings to win for just the second time in team history. They pulled out an 11-10 win over the White Sox that way on Sept. 18, 1929 at Navin Field. (first reported by ESPN)
  • The Tigers gave up 12 earned runs in a game and won for just the third time since 1939 and the eighth time since 1918.
  • The Tigers’ three-game winning streak to open the season is their longest since 2006, the last year they went to the World Series.
  • Avila’s shot was the first time in Comerica Park history that a Tiger hit a walkoff home run in extra innings that powered the Tigers ahead from a deficit. Damion Easley was the last to do it on Sept. 19, 1998, hitting a two-run, 10th-inning homer to left field at Tiger Stadium off Twins closer Rick Aguilera, sending Detroit to an 8-7 victory. Avila’s shot is just the seventh such homer for the Tigers since 1950. Credit ESPN for first finding it to be the first since ’98.
  • When’s the last time a Tiger did all that with two outs in the inning? According to baseball-reference.com, it was April 17, 1968, when Willie Horton hit a two-run homer off Cleveland’s Eddie Fisher to score Al Kaline and pull out a 4-3 win.
  • Miguel Cabrera’s game-tying three-run homer in the ninth inning is the third for the Tigers in the last four seasons. Ryan Raburn hit one off then-White Sox reliever Bobby Jenks on Aug. 5, 2010. Aubrey Huff did it Sept. 24, 2009 with a three-run shot off then-Blue Jay Jason Frasor.
  • Duane Below became the first Tigers reliever since Paul Gibson in 1991, and just the third since at least 1918, to pick up relief wins in two of the Tigers’ first three games in a season. Tom Morgan was the third, doing so in 1960.

I’m amused that we have a pitcher named Below. It has me wondering when Above is going to join the team … 😃

(Although, Mr. Below pronounces his name BEE-low, with a long E and emphasis on the first syllable.)

Season’s not even a week old and Guillen is running his mouth. YIKES!

sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/ozzie-guillen-fly-miami-personal-apology-cries-firing-144844410.html;_ylt=ApEpwMAgE9yeA8jXndjJBmM5nYcB
It doesn’t look like the controversy over Ozzie Guillen’s Fidel Castro comments will be disappearing anytime soon.
The Miami Marlins motormouthed manager tried to make further amends on Sunday by personally apologizing to the team’s Spanish-language broadcasters — both men were born in Cuba — but it doesn’t seem to have calmed the uproar any. Guillen reportedly will now fly to Miami during the Marlins’ off day on Tuesday to apologize for the comments at a news conference.
That news comes in the wake of a group of Cuban-Americans announcing plans to march on Marlins Park on Tuesday. The group is calling for a boycott of the team until Guillen steps down for saying in a Time Magazine interview that he loved and respected Castro, the former Cuban leader.

Well, the reality of it is that the MLBPA would never allow MLB to get rid of the DH. It would cost jobs for hitters that are either too old to field or never figured out what a glove is for. Personally, I like the pitcher batting. Not because they’re particularly good at it, but because that means everyone on defense plays on offense. I don’t see why the pitcher should be an exception just because it’s not what they’re good at.

Sadly, it looks like I’ll be joining you in that penance. Braves are 0-4. Getting owned by the Mets and Astros. 😦

I hate the pitcher batting simply because no one is promoted to the majors as a pitcher because he’s a great hitter, yet you’d do that for nearly every other position. You also would never keep a pitcher in the minors because he can’t hit, but you’d never promote the best fielder if he’s only going to hit .050. Hitting has nothing to do with the position of pitcher, which is why I hate seeing the pitcher bat. But I also hate the DH because it artificially adds a good hitter to the lineup that messes up the natural flow of the game.

Though I do agree, the DH ain’t going anywhere due to the union.

LOL, as bad as the Sox have been, getting owned by the Mets and Astros is indeed worse.

I’ve been a Royals fan my entire life, thus I pay more attention to the AL and I really don’t care for NL style of play (pitcher hitting). Yes, there is strategy involved in the NL when it comes to letting your pitcher hit or not, but do you really want to burn up all of your pinch hitters of an extra inning game when you’re in a crucial situation and the pitcher is due up?

I’m hoping my Royals will keep me out of that penance this year 😃

Personally I love the DH spot because it does kind of shake things up in the order. It was always fun watching Thome in a Twins jersey smack that thing a mile and a half out of the park. He is one of the guys that is just too old to efficiently work out on the field, but put a wooden stick in his hands and he will do damage.

As far as pitchers batting- NO! I am all for having a pitcher only for pitching. Their throwing arms get enough of a workout without having to swing a bat 9 times per game. Also, pitchers are the first line of defense and imagine a wild pitch, foul tip, etc beaning the pitchers arm- that could throw off their game for the rest of the day.

Those are just my opinions, but regardless of who bats where I just love baseball!

I’m hoping my Royals will keep me out of that penance this year 😃
My AL only fantasy baseball team includes Billy Butler, Alcides Escobar, Luke Hochevar and Felipe Paulino (who I’ll drop if he doesn’t get his rotation spot back).

So I’ll be rooting for a good Royals season…😃

Clearly the AL is in schism, giving way to such heresies. We pray for your conversion. 😛

I have to say, though, some of my absolute favorite ballparks belong to AL teams. If it wasn’t a 4-5 hour drive, I’d be at Camden Yards on a regular basis. Love that park.

My favorite team is the Braves!! I’ve been a fan of them all my life.

If you look past the part that we are 0-4 and were are getting are butts kicked by bad teams, I think we are still pretty good. :o

Does anyone go for the Cubs?
Are they any good?

I remember seeing the film ‘Taking care of business’ with James Belushi where he escapes prison to go watch the cubs play in the world series.

The Cubs have intrigued me since watching that film

I’m not sure how long you have been a Cubs fan, but they are in reconstruction mode right now because they have a new GM. Cub fans love this GM though because he broke the “Curse of the Bambino” with the Red Soxs and now they think that he will break “The Curse of the Billy Goat” which still exists for the Cubs.

If the Royals first trip through the rotation is a sign of things to come, I would dump Paulino ASAP.

Duffy, 1-0, permitted just one hit while striking out eight and working around four walks in a 103-pitch performance that completed a terrific first cycle for the Royals through their rotation: five runs in 29 innings for a 1.55 ERA]

Apparently we just needed Chipper back in the lineup. Braves won last night with him starting at 3B. Can’t say this bodes well for next year.

I’m a Tigers fan, but I enjoy visiting other major league parks. I am planning to visit Wrigley Field in July with some friends, and scratch that park off my bucket list. 🙂 This will be part of a Catholic singles event.

Thanks for that! I don’t have to make a decision until Paulino comes off the DL so I can wait and see. Being in New England everyone is so focused on the AL east that I’m always able to grab decent guys from the central division. I try to load up on offense and then randomly grab strike out pitchers which is why I drafted Paulino in the late rounds. Unfortunately it looks like I’ll have to use one of my drops early (I hate dropping anyone before June).

Thankfully my wedding tips pay for a season of fantasy baseball and MLB.tv. 😃

You’re welcome, Father! I was on a Royals message board earlier this morning and Royals fans are laughing at the Red Sox and their new pitching coach, Bob McClure, who spent several years as the Royals pitching coach. Ironic that with a new pitching coach, through the first week of the season, the Royals team ERA is one of the best in MLB while the Red Sox team ERA is one of the worst in MLB.

I like doing this as well. Each ball park seems to have its own unique character. I’m well known for turning business trips into baseball trips. I had the privilege of watching a game at Comerica Park when I was working in Detroit a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed that park and if I ever get back up there, I’d love to go again. This past September I made a special trip and hit Nationals Park, Camden Yards and Wrigley Field. Wrigley is just amazing - it’s almost like visiting a baseball museum. Camden is probably my favorite retro stadium. It was built in the early 90’s, but it has the feel of a park built much, much earlier. I think Tropicana Field in Tampa is the only one I’ve been to that I didn’t particularly enjoy. 🤷 I just hope that I get to add a couple more parks to my list this summer.

To think Camden is the park that got the retro craze going and hard to believe that park is nearly 20 years old  Gee, I wonder why you didn’t enjoy Tropicana Field, that stadium looks depressing even on TV.

While on the topic of stadiums, that new Marlins Park looks AMAZING!

BTW, if I ever have the money to do it, I would love to spend a couple of weeks at Spring Training and get to as many MLB stadiums as I could get to.

Tropicana just feels small. It’s not that it’s been poorly maintained - it’s a nice enough park from that perspective. It just doesn’t really feel like a major league park.

If/when I go to Marlins Park it would take a lot of intercession for me not to take action against their home run -]monstrosity/-] feature.

Sadly I don’t have enough vacation time to get to spring training, although that would certainly be a blast.
