As to whether Jesus told us it was OK to judge folks as long as we are not hypocrites. I think He said:
“Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.” Matthew 7:1-2
Exactly. If I was screwing up (i.e. sin or error), I would hope my brothers and sisters would “judge” me enough to help me get back on track. And in turn, I help them. See Matthew 7:12, Luke 6:31. We are our brothers’ keepers. That doesn’t mean judging them as not being holy enough, or condemning them as hellbound sinners. It also means we have to examine our own conscience before we open our mouths. I happen to love the sacrement of reconcilliation, and I do care enough about fellow Catholics to recommend it, highly, re: Mark 12:31. Seeing short lines for confession week-after-week fills me with concern, and after three years of watching this behavior since I returned, I am using my judgement, and I hope that others would judge me the same way. Did we get super-holy over the years? Did human nature change in America? What happened? Did I miss something? If so, I want in on this gig too.
Scripture is filled with instruction on how we
are to judge, and well as how we *are not *to judge. But that is a topic for another thread, I think.
