False! I have already provided one that you have ignored:
I would have thought that the validity of reason and the perception of empirical evidence were mutually supporting - and mutually dependent - strands of evidence for the nature of reality. If our senses and our reason mislead us, external factors will soon catch up…

One Supreme Mind is the most parsimonious, most adequate and most fertile explanation of not only the natural universe but also rational, powerful, creative and autonomous minds.
It is absurd to demand the existence of simpler entities than one Supreme Mind because we know from direct experience that a person is an indivisible entity - as you would discover if you appeared in court and pleaded not guilty on the ground that you are a complex entity!
An immensely complex entity - one that manifests supreme intelligence, creativity, emotion, activity, limitless power, and all this without physical (or any discernible) substance - that is claimed to simply exist without cause, without development from simpler entities, is not parsimonious; it’s an escape clause for the incurious, those who don’t wish to approach the deepest mysteries of reality.
Belief in the development from **countless numbers **of atomic particles is not only a blatant rejection of the principle of parsimony but also an escape clause for the incurious who are afraid of delving into the deepest mysteries of the mind - in addition to being a self-destructive and self-refuting reduction of reason to irrational events which have no insight whatsoever into what they are doing.
Positing one highly complex entity (God) as the originating cause of another highly complex entity (the universe) doesn’t actually provide an explanation - it just moves the need for explanation back a step.
To interpret the mind in quantitative terms reveals an incoherent, atomistic mentality that fails to grasp its fundamental unity. Does your mind have parts? If so what are they? Can the mind be assembled from a set of atomic particles? If so how? And what is the power that assembles them? Another set of atomic particles?
This objection to the argument from design has been posed many times, by minds much sharper than mine…
If the minds are much sharper than yours you are not in a position to judge whether their arguments are valid… Your statement is also a fallacious appeal to authority.

Scientific evidence is based on metascientific principles, e.g. the validity of reason and the intelligibility of the universe.
Your reasoning is not scientific but metascientific! Science is restricted to what can be observed by the senses. You are also presupposing the validity of reason in every statement you make.

This is your opinion, but the thread is about evidence.

The following video shows continuous, infinite, beautiful patterns which look as if they are designed by a mind, but it’s just a computer program iterating simple arithmetic (z := z[sup]2[/sup] + c), the Mandelbrot set.

youtube.com/watch?v=WAJE35wX1nQ

Certainly everyone should come over all spiritual looking at this, but the amazement is surely that these designs don’t come from a mind but just simple, mechanistic, blind arithmetic.

I am open to hearing about a naturally produced map, symbol, language or codes. Got any to share?
I don’t understand how they relate to anything I said, or even what you mean - they’re all human inventions so how could any get produced naturally?

The teaching of Jesus is the most important part of Scripture.
And as I have to keep repeating, Jesus doesn’t say anything about Design, so Design can have nothing at all to do with Christ.
The fact that people starve to death is not evidence that God never answers prayers. Otherwise Jesus would not have asked us to pray “Give us this day our daily bread”.
I never said anything about God, I said try telling someone starving to death about Providence, another concoction not found in scripture.
Jesus is talking about* asking God to help us*** in our struggle against evil because He is a loving Father who does not stand by and do nothing while His children suffer. He said “Ask and you shall receive.”
He says that in a different chapter, yes, but what’s it got to do with the thread?
The fact that the position and shape of all the trillions of stars is the product of blind forces
Hallelujah :tanning: :christmastree1: :flowers: we got there in the end.
…] is not evidence that all events are the product of blind forces.
OK, let’s continue on our systematic way. Having agreed that 99.999999% of the universe is the product of blind forces we can move on to the remaining 0.000001%, Earth. To begin, do you claim that any geography, geology or meteorology is not the product of blind forces?
The fact that what is seen or sensed is not the sole form of evidence proves that science is not the sole form of evidence. There is also metascientific, epistemological, historical, moral, social, religious, aesthetic, psychological and personal evidence for Design.
More usual groupings might be such as testimonial, documentary/demonstrative and anecdotal evidence but what the hay. I’m not sure how there can be historical, moral, social, psychological or personal evidence for Design, or even what some of them might mean, could you give an example of each?

Metascience/metaphysics is worthless here, since those guys never agree on anything, they can’t even decide its name :D. Aesthetics is very weak – “I think it looks prettier in pink” isn’t much of a case. Religion is surely out of court, since there’s nothing in scripture or any creed about Design. God creates Creation, hence the name, He doesn’t design Designion. Creation and design are very different.

It is absurd to demand the existence of simpler entities than one Supreme Mind because we know from direct experience that a person is an indivisible entity - as you would discover if you appeared in court and pleaded not guilty on the ground that you are a complex entity!
Sure, right now I’m a complex entity - but I didn’t start out that way. No-one would have accused me of being “fully” a person, in the sense of being completely in control and aware of the consequences of my actions, when I was freshly out of the womb…and probably not until I had attained the age of legal majority, if you’re talking court appearances. Why do you think there are separate courts, separate laws and separate penalties for underage offenders?
Belief in the development from **countless numbers **of atomic particles is not only a blatant rejection of the principle of parsimony but also an escape clause for the incurious who are afraid of delving into the deepest mysteries of the mind - in addition to being a self-destructive and self-refuting reduction of reason to irrational events which have no insight whatsoever into what they are doing.
But that’s the whole point of parsimony - the explanatory power of simpler mechanisms when we try to understand more complex ones. You are positing an immensely complex entity as a brute fact, which is as far from parsimony as you can get. Why do you have such a problem with the possibility that reasoning ability is comprised of simpler processes interacting in a beautifully intricate neurochemical ballet?
To interpret the mind in quantitative terms reveals an incoherent, atomistic mentality that fails to grasp its fundamental unity. Does your mind have parts? If so what are they? Can the mind be assembled from a set of atomic particles? If so how? And what is the power that assembles them? Another set of atomic particles?
Different parts of my mind certainly do entertain different thoughts and awarenesses. Neurological investigations even bear out the fact that different areas of the brain perform different functions. If we had such fundamental unity of mind as you posit, where would be the fuel for countless human dramas played out in history and literature? Haven’t you ever experienced conflicting desires? And why should not atomic, electrical and other chemical interactions result in the mental fluctuations we all experience on a daily basis? The very fact that particular parts of our neurological control systems and mental states are affected by the ingestion or absorption of particular chemicals - like ethanol, caffeine or nicotine, to name only the most common examples - should point to the fact that minds are composed of complex physical interactions.
If the minds are much sharper than yours you are not in a position to judge whether their arguments are valid… Your statement is also a fallacious appeal to authority.
If I were merely appealing to authority, I would simply have cited the works of some of these superior minds, rather than explaining my own understanding of the argument in my own words…

Your reasoning is not scientific but metascientific! Science is restricted to what can be observed by the senses. You are also presupposing the validity of reason in every statement you make.
And if I were to trust in the efficacy of astrology or alchemy, would my “reasoning” still be metascientific?

first, laws of nature were never designed by humans. rather; language was designed to describe what already had been designed and in existence.

even w/o humans and our language - those laws would still exist. your wording describes it as if it is influenced by our terms.
Saying “what already had been designed” is your opinion. There’s no evidence that any phenomena were designed (whatever that might mean), and as time started at the big bang there was no time beforehand in which they could have been designed anyway!

If you look up “law of nature” you’ll find definitions such as “a theoretical principle deduced from particular facts, applicable to a defined group or class of phenomena, and expressible by the statement that a particular phenomenon always occurs if certain conditions be present”. They are descriptions of phenomena, not the phenomena themselves.
what was stated, and clearly adds to the support for the concept that design is possible would be the universal ‘order’ of things.
You might have a point if there were no such things as earthquakes, hurricanes and suffering, but as it stands the presence of disorder in the world indicates either that it wasn’t designed or that the design was incompetent, take your pick.

  1. Scientific evidence is based on metascientific principles, e.g. the validity of reason and the intelligibility of the universe.
  2. Therefore scientific evidence is not the sole form of evidence.
Incidentally, I can’t find the word metascience in any dictionary. I guess you mean metaphysics but confused it thinking about science. If you meant something else, could you link a definition.

Scientific evidence just means empirical evidence, and empirical evidence just means a reason for believing something is or isn’t true based on what is actually observed rather than on theory. It’s that simple, it doesn’t rely on any highfalutin metaphysics or anything else, which is why it makes great evidence.

God, in His master design of a material universe conducive to sustaining free will and human consciousness, needed to endow matter with the intrinsic nature to “change” and modify itself so that it could adjust to the effects of the Fall, where the natural world is at odds with the human heart, e.g. The fallen, broken natural world now contains a nature that is hostile towards man, e.g. mosquito bites, hurricanes, earthquakes, cancer, poison ivy, tornadoes, death, etc. So theistic evolution supports a Designer who crafted the constant motion of energy to sustain the free will and rational curiosity of the human mind.

The presence of evil in the world is not evidence of Materialism as the Ultimate Truth; rather, it is evidence of a personal, benevolent Creator. The reality of evil is explained through Catholic doctrine but not explained from an atheistic evolutionist worldview.

I don’t think that logic alone can prove anything, as far as a Designer goes. Obviously, if you simply approach it logically, then there must be a designer of the designer, and one of that designer, and so on…It’s more a matter of faith.

False! I have already provided one that you have ignored:
That’s not an example, it’s just a statement! Do you not understand what an example is?
If you do not refute this statement it will be clear to everyone that you cannot do so.
Your reference to “everyone” makes it clear that you are showboating again. Nevertheless, I don’t refute the statement. But remember I asked for examples not assertions; when you provide some of the former I might have comment.

I state again that I may well not dispute them, but I just cannot think of any. Your aggression and condescension is unnecessary.
You also have a burden of proof: that science is the sole form of knowledge. If you do not do so it will be clear to everyone that you cannot do so.
I’ve never claimed that it is. I just claim that I know of no other reliable form. Again, you try to poison the well, why do you never just answer the question? Why do you make so many statements that you can’t, or won’t, substantiate? Presumably you do realise that the argument from tedious repetition doesn’t equate to truth?
In the meantime I am selecting a list of examples of epistemological, historical, moral, social, religious, aesthetic, psychological and personal evidence for Design - in stark contrast to your failure to produce evidence for anything whatsoever. The sceptic deems himself invulnerable because he offers nothing positive but that is the cause of his downfall because scepticism is patently self-destructive…
I’ll ignore the snarky faux-philosophical rhetoric and wait for your examples. It would have been a lot simpler if you’d just provided them when I asked for them back in post#72!

(although, if you can find a single statement of mine where I’ve made a truth claim without substanting it, I’ll gladly oblige now or retract the statement.)

The entire scientific method presupposes the certainty and validity of the rational human mind constructed of will and intellect. This is an assumption rooted in all scientists, theologians, and philosophers, unless you are a postmodern thinker. We can safely assume that our minds are capable of discovering objective knowledge and can perceive reality as it really is.
All matter is sacramental in nature. The created universe is a sacrament and a cosmic temple that reflects God’s absolute truths. The appearance of disorder and incompetence within creation is a sacramental “sign” of man’s abuse of free will and reason. If God refuses to have his sons and daughters be genetic robots or divine puppets, he had to allow for free will. But he knew that any rational creature that is not the I AM (Himself) would become prideful, arrogant, disobedient and slide into chaos and irrationality. The sacramental universe with its apparent dichotomy of order and random chaos reflects this human truth of the Fall and original sin. We must approach the material world through asacramental lens.

The complexity of the human soul must be manifested in very complex chemical, physical, and neurological functions. Again, all matter is “sacramental” in nature, reflecting the metaphysical realities. Somehow God has allowed his spiritual realities to be manifested through and in matter. Science is nothing more than the human mind analyzing God’s creative power, will, and mind manifested in matter. And what that physical expression looks like is often profound, complex, intricately complex, enigmatic, and mysterious. We observe God’s reflection of eternal truths when we analyze the functions and laws of his material world; we don’t observe a perfectly efficient and perfectly ordered world because the spiritual realities of sin and spiritual warfare after the Fall aren’t perfectly efficient and perfectly ordered. If God wanted to create a perfectly ordered world He would and could have done so.

Different parts of my mind certainly do entertain different thoughts and awarenesses. Neurological investigations even bear out the fact that different areas of the brain perform different functions. Welcome to the forum. 🙂

An excellent post! It is sad that not all Christians believe in the Sacraments.

Your argument seems to be that human inventions come from human minds.

I don’t understand what you mean by cosmic temples, divine puppets and all matter being sacramental. As it doesn’t seem to be about the thread topic perhaps you’d like to share your personal beliefs with someone else, but thanks anyway.

Logic alone cannot prove anything whatsoever except what is deduced from our premises…
