Evidence for the Assumption

Actually, I think it was condemned. I’m sure you’re familiar with the ol’ argument that the earliest claim to Mary’s Assumption is in the Transitus Literature which was condemned as heretical by several popes.
Which Popes? Are you talking about the so-called Gelasian decree? If so, the end of the Juniper Carol article may address your claim (see the section under Objections). Also, if you have a specific quote from a Pope defining the Assumption as heresy, I would be willing to read it.
I just don’t see how these arguments make it probable that the Assumption of Mary (in seed form) is present in the Deposit.
Ok, you don’t.

Here is documentation that supports this claim;
Don’t trust what Webster writes. As our good friend and fellow forum participant PhilVaz wrote a while back:
kc << Juniper Carol explicitly states that the Transitus literature is a complete fabrication which should be rejected by any serious historian >>

William Webster is simply lying about Juniper Carol. I’ve had the photocopied sections of his Mariology (3 volumes) on the Immaculate Conception and Assumption for a number of years, and only recently typed up the sections on the Assumption. What Fr. Burghardt says (he is the author of the articles in those volumes on the eastern and western Fathers on Mary, not Juniper Carol who is the editor of the volumes) is that the Transitus is “valueless” as strict history, but nonetheless significant and priceless both historically and theologically. Here is what Webster does not and won’t quote:

Burghardt: “This account is significant, in the first instance, because it affirms unequivocally the death and burial of Mary, the reunion of her soul and body without delay, and her assumption into heaven in soul and body. It is significant, in the second place, for the developed Assumption theology which links this privilege causally with Mary’s Maternity and virginity, and stresses the parallelism which ought to exist between Christ and His Mother in victory over death. The account of Pseudo-Melito, like the rest of the Transitus literature, is admittedly valueless as history, as an historical report of Mary’s death and corporeal assumption; under that aspect the historian is justified in dismissing it with a critical distaste. But the account is priceless nonetheless – historically and theologically. Historically, because it witnesses indisputably to the feeling of the faithful for Mary, a growing awareness of her dignity, even though we are unable to specify the full range of this awareness geographically or even to indicate its dawning. Theologically, because it postulates the Assumption on grounds that are valid not simply for piety but for scientific theology as well.” (Carol Mariology, volume 1, page 149-150, emphasis added)

Burghardt: “What is the value of these witnesses? As historical accounts of an actual event – Mary’s death, her translation, her Assumption – by individuals who were personally present, or else were in contact with the events through unimpeachable sources, the Transitus literature is valueless. But theologically the tales are priceless. They reveal the reaction of early Christian piety when confronted with the apparent fact of Our Lady’s death; they evidence the first unequivocal solutions to the problem of Mary’s destiny. The solutions, though divergent, disclose a genuinely Christian insight: it was not fitting that the body of Mary should see corruption. More importantly, the solution is given, incorruption is postulated, on theological lines: the principles of solution are the divine Maternity, Mary’s unimpaired virginity, her unrivaled holiness…” (Carol Mariology, volume 2, page 145-146, see above, emphasis added)

That is what Juniper Carol says (specifically Fr. Burghardt) and you and Webster can now apologize to Carol and Burghardt. This goes to show – you cannot trust William Webster. Look up what he quotes, please!

For a scholarly treatment of the so-called “Transitus literature” you want to get Shoemaker’s thorough study Ancient Traditions of the Virgin Mary’s Dormition and Assumption (Oxford Univ Press, 2006 paperback). And throw Webster into the garbage can where he belongs.

I accept the Assumption. However, a Protestant friend of mine does not. He has asked what the Church uses as ‘evidence’ for the doctrine. I’m a bit stumped. Any help is much appreciated!
To me the assumption is one of the easiest Marian doctrines to proof. Here is the one biblical passage that undeniably prove it: Deut 5:16:

16 Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.

Jesus was bound by law to honor His own mother, not to do this breaks one of the commandments.

To put it it in simple terms:
My own mother passed away 7 years ago. I still wish I could see her and talk to her. Jesus being true God and true man has the power to do this, that I can not do. To say that somehow Jesus does not share the same feelings any loving son (like me) would have for his own deceased mother is to say that Jesus is a lesser man than me.

So if you love your mother, Jesus loves his own mother infinitely more than you.

There is no glory we can confer to the Blessed Mother that could surpass the glory she is receiving from her son right now.

“Viva Cristo Rey!!”

Pope Pius XII made the Assumption official Church Dogma On November 1, 1950 with this document, in which he explains his reasoning:
vatican.va/holy_father/pius_xii/apost_constitutions/documents/hf_p-xii_apc_19501101_munificentissimus-deus_en.html

its worth a read for those that question the thoroughness in which such decisions are derived and documents. I can not do it justice but I will say that he makes a very strong case that the Assumption was and is a strong part of Catholic tradition, supported by theologians in numerous ways across time and place. Many of them note that the Assumption is consistent with the dignity of Mary, the Mother of our Lord. And Pope Pius sees it as a clear sign from the Holy Spirit that when he queried the bishops and theologians about whether the Assumption should be official Church Doctrine, the support for the position was close to unanimous.

The Church has made no definitive declaration as to whether or not Mary underwent physical death prior to her assumption. At this point, we are free to think either way.
If you read the section in the CCC on Mary (#963-975), you’ll note that any comment on death regarding Mary (whether she did or not) is carefully avoided.

What we must believe is that she was assumed, body and soul, into heaven.
On the contrary, the Dormition of the Theotokos has been a longstanding tradition in the Church. The fact is the belief that we are free to believe that Mary didn’t die is a more recent development rather than the age old tradition that went unquestioned for over 1000 years.

To believe such a thing today is to go contrary to what our Church Fathers have taught in the early Church.

I was not completely clear in the way I explained the theories taught in my former church. They believed that Mary was no different from any one of us. Her salvation, they believed, came from a saving moment when she “accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior” in a way no different from that of a person answering an altar call. The believed that Mary was a sinner before being saved, saved in the sense of OSAS. They also believed that she had children after Our Lord. To sum it up, they taught that Mary was a sinner who was saved when she put her faith in Jesus.

They do not view salvation as an ongoing process or that God prevented Mary from sin. In their view, a person is saved forever the moment he or she prays a sinner’s prayer, accepting Jesus, and there is no way to lose that salvation. They do not accept that Mary was filled with any special grace from the moment her life began.
In a way, Mary is indeed no different from us. Everything that happened to Mary is not something that is unique to her, but something that will come to all of us. Her special privilege is not that she’s the only human to receive such graces from God (except of course being the bearer of God on earth which will forever be uniquely hers), but being filled with grace and being resurrected in glory to be assumed body and soul into heaven is our destiny. Being the Theotokos, she went first. This includes being saved. Because she was filled with grace at the very moment of her conception. For us, its a lifelong struggle through sin, repentance, change, and then filling ourselves with grace through the Sacraments.

Don’t think we cannot get what Mary got. It’s God’s will that eventually we will, if like Mary we cooperate with His will fully 😉

In defense of Webster against Phil:

I don’t get the point of Phil’s response to Webster’s quotation. It’s not like Webster is dying that the Transitus literature is historically and theologically important for discerning a growing marian sense in the faithful at this time. I think all Webster wants to establish is that the Transitus literature does not attest a belief generations back, and his citation of Carol here seems totally reasonable.

It’s tough for a Protestant to grasp because typology is so often alien to them, such as Mary as the new Eve, the Ark of the Covenant, etc… These figures all contribute to the dogma, and point to it in a confluence of arrows.

I recommend reading The Asumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Juniper Carol’s Mariology. It’s a little lengthy, but if your friend wants the truth, he/she should be willing to delve into the material with an honest eye.

:o
what is typology? i love Mary and give her Honnor I know who she is. Mother of Christ the basics maybe to catholism. i know where i grew up in all the different churches my family tried as we moved, only catholic was a place for rest respectively in rest and peace. there are still things i like that i learned, is it that we talk diffrontly we have different language we cant understand more? i have other things i struggle to believe, not eurcharist or mary or saints but other things. how do you learn cultural differences if your not a genious? waht is this typology am thinkin what it is or am i off track. not every term you guys use is in this encyclopedia i am tryin to use on the website as a reference.

alright i been readin and it seems your talkin about how Mary did not die. it is in scripture. thats How God told me, that’s how i know even though back then i could see no common ground besides love for Jesus with catholics.

i prayed before i read, asked God forgiveness my sins, because of Jesus i did that, then i thanked Him for things fresh and new, then asked him to show me what i need to know and teach me, He Told me. i was non denominational now i am not. the scripture your lookin for for scripotural proof is in revelations, about the woman with the stars in her crown ect and the woman who was in labor and the dragon or serpent made a flood and the earth swallowed it up those verses. they tell you that she was taken into the wilderness for a time and times and a time, the language time times and a time, is used when talkin about Elijah as well. it is scripture that clearly says she did not die. and will return and i see she has return from time to time, but she has a time to return completely and permantly. but see they say in portestant churches that this is the church bieng talked about. i say what have we given birth to but wind… that is in the bible too bgiven bith to wind, and we dont go and come back over and over until finally were here for good. they dont know. pray for them. they do want to know, its like racism they are trained from babies to accept these things. it is a disability where we have faithful followers of chrsit they make us to nothing when we are added up. i have no church to be in. all cause of them. and i dont know if i can be catholic or if they will call me herretic as well. its lonely. but Mary was the first truth my acquainteds did not know that i did. God used my heart, his heart, scripture, everything to make me read it right. it is possible to read things wrong cause you were taught to, i am evidence of that and of God can fix it. Mary made me see there is a hope to be in a church, cause i suffer when i defend her, Jesus saved me, but Mary was chosen so Jesus could give me more of himself and i could be smaller and even my parents need to know not to be afraid of. its like racism the attacks there fear based. its not Holy what the protestants say of Her.

Perplexity,
surely you know that William Webster is a lapsed Catholic who expends most of his efforts in attacking the Church. And surely you are capable of seeing that he twists the teachings of the Church to his own ends. Let’s just look at this passage from the work you are quoting:
Pope Gelasius explicitly condemns the authors as well as their writings and the teachings which they promote and all who follow them. And significantly, this entire decree and its condemnation was reaffirmed by Pope Hormisdas in the sixth century around A.D. 520. (Migne Vol. 62. Col. 537-542). These facts prove that the early Church viewed the assumption teaching, not as a legitimate expression of the pious belief of the faithful but as a heresy worthy of condemnation.
He makes the incredible leap that just because the assumption is mentioned in an apocryphal work that the assumption itself was regarded as a heresy by the early church. These works also mention that Jesus was the messiah. Using Webster’s logic, that would also be considered a heresy. That’s how simple it is to debunk Webster.

He also makes this statement:
Pius XII, in his decree in 1950, declared the Assumption teaching to be a dogma revealed by God. But the basis upon which he justifies this assertion is not that of Scripture or patristic testimony but of speculative theology. He concludes that because it seems reasonable and just that God should follow a certain course of action with respect to the person of Mary, and because he has the power, that he has in fact done so. And, therefore, we must believe that he really acted in this way
.

If anyone really wants the truth about this, read the actual decree:

I have no problem with someone being a lapsed Catholic expending most of their efforts attacking the Church. I have no problem with someone being a lapsed Protestant expending most of their efforts attacking Protestantism (as so many Catholic apologists are). etc. All I care about is good argumentation. I am in many ways just like Webster, I even attended seminary. Your point is just a genetic fallacy though.

Yeah…I doubt Webster’s logic is that ‘given any (x) whatsoever, if (x) is mentioned in a condemned heretical piece of literature, then (x) is a condemned heresy.’ lol The assumption of Mary was a teaching peculiar to these works, a teaching not attested to by really anyone before. This significantly raises the probability that it was viewed as heterodoxy.

Further, I agree with Webster’s point about Pius XII! I’ve read Munificentissimus several times over the years. There is nothing in the deposit of faith that says Mary was assumed into heaven…all Pius can do is say the deposit says x, y and z, and these things probablify the Assumption. That’s nowhere near what the Catholic needs to show. The best course of action for the Catholic is to just show that the magisterium is what it claims to be, I really don’t think there’s any other case for the Assumption.

I’ve found an incredible amount of misquotations and misrepresentations from Catholic apologists, but I never draw the conclusion that their general work should be distrusted.

Typology refers to those things in the Old Testament that were shadows of things in the New Testament. For example, remember in the Passover, the lamb was slain and those who had the “blood of the lamb” were spared from the angel of death. You see how this foreshadows Jesus, the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29), and those in the New Covenant are also saved by the blood of the Lamb. In the OT, the death spared was physical death. In the NT, the death spared is spiritual death.

Types in the NT are always superior to their shadows in the OT. Those things in the OT help us understand truths in the New Testament.

For example, take a look at this chart comparing the language used for the Ark of the Covenant and in the life of Mary. So we can understand more about Mary when we learn more about the Ark that foreshadowed her.

I don’t get the point of Phil’s response to Webster’s quotation.
Phil’s point starts with the fact that it wasn’t Juniper who said the Transitus is a complete fabrication that should be rejected by any serious historian. It was Fr. Burghardt whose words were in question, not Carol, and secondly, it does not summate Fr. Burghardt’s position on the text. Webster was trying to score a point, but failed on at least 2 levels.

In the bigger picture, Paul C pointed out the obvious –– identifying a book as “apocryphal” does not mean that the Church thinks all things mentioned in that book are considered heretical––such as when they mention Jesus as Messiah, or as another example, the Virgin Birth. Bottom line, Webster is wrong to claim that Popes declared the Assumption heresy.

For anyone who wants to read the actual text of the “Gelasian decree” (again, if it is indeed from Pope Gelasius), you can read it here GELASIAN DECREE.

Attacking those that don’t agreee with you is not charitable. We are called to love everyone. Explaining your position is charitable.

There’s another way to look at it. First of all, this is an argument from silence. Because you can’t find a previous written statement that said Mary was assumed bodily into heaven, you assume that the assumption didn’t happen. At the same time, there is no written record that her body suffered corruption in the grave. Secondly, your argument suggests that a single heretical writting could infect the whole church. This seems unlikely - and to those that beleive that Church doctrine is protected by the Holy Spirit, impossible
Further, I agree with Webster’s point about Pius XII! I’ve read Munificentissimus several times over the years. First of all, you seem to be thinking that the deposit of faith must be written down on paper… This is not the Catholic view. The deposit of faith is written first on the hearts of the faithful, only to be written down on paper when its needed for the faithful. Pope Pius XII felt compelled to make the Assumption of Mary doctrine in 1950. based on the fact that the whole Catholic Church almost unanimously believed it to be true. And you are right that the credibility of the assumption rests with the Credibility of the magesterium. We believe that Jesus established the Church to administer the sacrements and tell the truth about salvation when he commissioned St. Peter and the Apostles (Matthew 16 and 28). And He promised to be with the church unitl the end of time. We take him at his word.
I’ve found an incredible amount of misquotations and misrepresentations from Catholic apologists, but I never draw the conclusion that their general work should be distrusted.
Well, Catholic Apologists are not all equal and if you find one that tries to mislead rather than to tell the truth or tells you something counter to established Church teaching, then you should definitely distrust that individual.

I don’t think an argument is bad simply because it’s one from silence, there are numerous cases where arguments from silence adduce powerful support. But, I’m content to say we just don’t know. (This is quite a stretch from saying this is a dogma)
Secondly, your argument suggests that a single heretical writting could infect the whole church. This seems unlikely - and to those that beleive that Church doctrine is protected by the Holy Spirit, impossible
Hmm, I guess I’m not sure I follow.

I’ve only explained the deposit as the Church through her theologians does. I’ve said nothing non-Catholic about the deposit. The fact is though, if you want to probablify the Assumption on grounds other than the magisterium, you have to be able to evidence that this was believed before the last Apostle, otherwise you’re not arguing for the Catholic position.
Well, Catholic Apologists are not all equal and if you find one that tries to mislead rather than to tell the truth or tells you something counter to established Church teaching, then you should definitely distrust that individual.
People make mistakes, people are ignorant etc. I tend to just take things with a grain of sand, so I guess mistakes/deception don’t effect me as much as others.

I agree, I don’t attack Catholics.
That’s a very positive statement.
I don’t think an argument is bad simply because it’s one from silence, there are numerous cases where arguments from silence adduce powerful support. But, I’m content to say we just don’t know. (This is quite a stretch from saying this is a dogma)
Its middle ground from the position of Webster, which is the assumption is false and the Catholic view that its true.
Hmm, I guess I’m not sure I follow.
my point was that its hard to beleive that someone in the year 500 could lie about the assumption of Mary and get God’s entire church to follow it, particularly if you believe the Church is under the protection of the Holy Spirit.
We beleive that the Assumption of Mary was known to the Apostles, even though they didn’t write it down for posterity. This is the position of the Magesterium.
I wasn’t accusing you of being anti-Catholic. I was just pointing out how Catholics think.
People make mistakes, people are ignorant etc. I tend to just take things with a grain of sand, so I guess mistakes/deception don’t effect me as much as others.
That’s fair. We should give people the benefit of the doubt.

WOW…i checked out that link…i have read the bible alot and i never saw or thought to look at those things…very awesome…God is Great!!! i get the imagary and scripture and how What God did in her made her as like the Arc of the Covenent, and i think that its awesome that we can see it as the word of God and What he made His Blessed Virgin to be, but is She THE only living arc of the covenent or will all who walk in God’s ways and enjoy and be satisfied in Him also be the Arc of the Covenent with her? Is she the First and the Last, and are there others in between that are that Made by God also to be Holy Atonned for before birth and never to sin or enjoy a lie also? then my arguement about the blameless 144,000 of the tribes of judah at the almost end of this sinful world who welcome Christ into His kingdom in thier hearts and souls on earth would be as i believed it and true and then i wouldnt be wrong to tell a person who is not knowing Mary how she is but Knows Jesus’s salvation look at revelations and if God calls 144,000 blameless then why do you say she has sin.

PS… to the person who talks about protestants slamming thier church. i never joined a church on earth. i was baptised Catholic and wasnt told about it til i was an adult and my mother almost instinctively told me not to worry that i didnt know what church i was baptised to when in the hospital, this conversation took place after coming home that time, because i was baptised as a baby by father manning in the catholic church my grandparents attend in Lowell. bytw my grandfather is in the hospital w amonnia. (sp?) and told me a half a year ago that when he is called home to let him go. so knowing he might not want to live through it i been up all night trying not to pray for him in a way that would displease him, and asking God to do his will, so i dont bash the church that i was taught in. my dad chose assembly of God, my mother never joined another church after leaving catholic, she needs to remember what she learned though, only thing i think my moms right on about the Catholic church… that i told you all i know and believe that the other churches dont know at all as a whole in part and in whole… is that Mary would laugh at us if we Praised her like unto God, honor and Glory she is Given and rightly due, but she Served the Lord and still does. that she comes back again and again is evidence enough for me she does come back to tell people about Jesus. But the thing is i’m not slamming any church. i’m telling you of the hurts i got there, not for Jesus but out of fear. and i dont aggree with slamming, or hate speech. but i dont hate the ignorance that can exist in a human even a saved one can have lack of understanding and less knowledge than another. i’m tellin you God gave to me and they no longer love me as God made me, but rather my parents do, but there churches that Christians have that arent catholic are more like homes away from home for those types of church’s people who have that doctrine that doesnt know Jesus’s Mother for who and why He made and chose her to be and Is and was With God Blameless Never Sinned and DID not die. i dont care if there isnt church doctrine in the Catholic church demanding people to acknowledge nor deny it except that they dont deny it, they let God tell the people it obviously and dont Blasephmey the Names of the Saints as the Anit Christ will, I have no church Home in Jesus, i was told growing up I could chose one, I just need to let people know what i been through where i am and where i am headed to make sure there are Christians who i can worship with longer than a stranger meets a long lost relative and knows them by thier Father but there doctrine keeps us from Knowing Christ together. i havent shared the things i am worried i might not be able to believe because i dont know i cant believe them forever, cause before i knew how awesome God made His blessed VIrgin, I put it in Gods hands and i might be able to do that again i’m not sure how much grace i can contain and if the things i heard of that are catholic that i dont know or believe which seems to be one subject that i dont know is required or if its a bible kinda phylosophy or not that i am waiting to be told and know if i can either way who ever is right on the subject. so having been baptised catholic before i knew it, came into catholic beliefs and got percuted by what you think are “my own kind” i tell you i love Jesus and know his Salvation but i have been searching for a church for a long time, refusing to go to non catholic churches, not because i was thiers but because i am Jesus’s as a follower in Him. not much else, except to my family which Loves God much cousins and all.

is She THE only living arc of the covenent or will all who walk in God’s ways and enjoy and be satisfied in Him also be the Arc of the Covenent with her?
In another typological sense, because Mary is also the figure of the Church, those in the Church share their identity in a mystical way with Mary, the Ark.

Mary had a unique role in human history, the mother of God. That is what makes her the new ark of the convenant. She was born with special graces for that role. This is not to say that others have not achieved high levels of holiness - they have. But not even the most devout Saint was born without original sin like Mary
Although you might not fully appreciate this, baptism is very significant. By being baptized, you were freed of original sin, given the necessary graces to go to heaven and made a part of the one, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We believe you can only be baptized once for the forgiveness of sins. Baptism, at its most basic level, is a covenant agreement. God agrees to make you a member of his church, provides his grace and forgives your sins but to gain all that you need to follow his will for you or you will fall from grace. Perhaps the next stage in his will for you is what brought you to this website in the first place
bytw my grandfather is in the hospital w amonnia. (sp?) and told me a half a year ago that when he is called home to let him go. so knowing he might not want to live through it i been up all night trying not to pray for him in a way that would displease him, and asking God to do his will, so i dont bash the church that i was taught in.
This is exactly what you should be doing. God knows what is best for you Grandfather so put your faith in his hands.
my dad chose assembly of God, my mother never joined another church after leaving catholic, she needs to remember what she learned though, only thing i think my moms right on about the Catholic church… that i told you all i know and believe that the other churches dont know at all as a whole in part and in whole…
Life is a journey toward or away from God. We all ultimately have the choice of heaven or hell. If we serve God and our neighbors in life, we will go to heaven, where we will be with people who do the same. If we serve only ourselves, we will be condemned to live in Hell with all the others self-centered souls.
. is that Mary would laugh at us if we Praised her like unto God, honor and Glory she is Given and rightly due, but she Served the Lord and still does. that she comes back again and again is evidence enough for me she does come back to tell people about Jesus.
Let’s be clear here. While many Catholics are devoted to Mary, we don’t see her as equal to God. When we pray to Mary, we ask for her intercession with God, just like we do the other Saints. And yes, Mary has brought millions to her Son. Have you read about her work at Gaudalupe, Lourdes and Fatima? They are hugely inspirational.

Be patient, both with others and yourself. You are being tested, as we all are. You will find your way, I am confident of it.

Let me just give you a short primer of what the Catholic church teaches:

You enter the state of grace when you are baptized as I said above. To stay in the state of grace, you must do God’s will, which is to love him and love your neighbor as yourself. Love is doing things for others without expecting anything in return. God is pure love. He provides everything to everyone and of course noone has anything to give him in return.

However, if you deliberately and knowingly turn from God through sin, you fall from grace. If you die in this state, you will be condemned to hell. However, God is perfectly merciful, He will return you to the state of grace if you ask for it sacramentally - confessing your sins to a priest, repenting and doing penance. This process can be repeated as often as you need it. God wants you to go to heaven - but it must be your choice to do so. If you die in the state of grace, you will go to heaven.

Jesus set up the Catholic Church for the sole reason of helping people get to heaven. Its role is to teach the Truths about Faith and Morals and to administer the sacrament to the faithful so they can have the necessary Grace to get to heaven. Since you read the Bible, pay attention to how these simple truths are described. Start with the great commission in Matthew 28: 18-20.

Good luck in your journey home.
