Ah yes, I think you’re may be right there. Ask Jesus, The Virgin Mary or St. Michael to see them off. Don’t talk to them directly.

And don’t take advice from amateurs like me without corroborating it!

Also, I’ve read a non-priest shouldn’t use the Rite Of Exorcism, as it involves addressing the creeps directly.

I believe the exorcist Gabriel Amorth mentioned that he was ‘wrapped in the cloak of the Blessed Virgin Mary’, and thus suffered naught from them.

It’s interesting to compare Gabriel Amorth’s book with Malachi Martin’s on the same subject: the former said he did 30,000(?) exorcisms (blessings) of which only about 100 involved real possessions. So much for Hollywood!

The latter, however, gave a few case histories, and they were the most frightening thing I’ve ever read. Really disturbed me. I don’t recommend his book to anyone.

Anyway, leading a pious life filled with Catholic devotions, prayers, icons and sacramentals should keep the wretches at bay.

Off topic: What irks me is all the demonic media available today, and not a mention of Jesus, The Virgin Mary or St. Michael in any of it. I suggest they (demonic media) darken people’s minds, and leads them to think the fiends are more powerful than they really are.

I’m guessing film makers don’t dare mention Jesus, The Virgin Mary or St. Michael, as it might make them ‘uncomfortable’, perhaps [muses grimly].

I’ve wanted to read both Fr Amorth’s and Martin’s books for some time but I haven’t bought them yet. Are they interesting reads?

Why don’t you recommend Malachi Martin’s book? What was frightening about the book? Would you mind sharing some of the details with us?

Also, I believe Malachi Martin wasn’t in good standing with the Church. That’s the main reason why I wouldn’t question anything in his books.

Some links on why not to read Malachi Martin:

Fr. Malachi Martin & “perfect possesion”

Malachi Martin

This question has been answered so many times on the apologetics & spritual warfare forums on saint-mike.org, that if you do a search of “Malachi Martin” in the google box on the main page, you get 3 pages of results.

I’ll stay away from all of his books. I’ll stick to reading faithful Catholic books on this subject. Thanks for the help.

Many good posts ; can see why such an experience as O.P. had was even allowed by God ; similar experiences have been reported by others who, before they became more spiritually astute, have visited places such as hindu temples for the purpose of just visiting - ( the aspect of pleasure, curiosity etc: ), and no intent of worship ; ’ fogotten 'about same yet was told by charismatically giftted priests years later how that sin had to be confessed !

While not implicating O.P , instances such as persons wanting to enjoy such temple architecture and all - could it not be an evidence , to some extent of our lukewarmness towards nonbelievers …and may be once we get to taste what these persons might even be going through at one level , help us to be mor compassionate and to increase our own zeal to help them - the Divine Mercy prayers - .thedivinemercy.org/ where , esp. in the Novena , our Lord asks for All to be brought to His mercy comes to mind .

Just yesterday , happened to listen to one priest’s powerful testimony about our birthright and responsibilty to plead for the protection of The Precious Blood ( apologies , it was on Shalom channel that broadcasts mostly in Malayalam only but has a good prayer petition site ,shalomonline.net/ esp. their night vigils on First Friday - hope that blasphemously intended and possibly demonically influenced ’ professor’ from Minnesota would attend one , even on T.V !)

Even though had heard of The Precious Blood prayers in the past , somehow often did not use to take it with enough seriousness may be - forgetting to do so ; hope would find this a joyful experience from now on and ask for same for others who are in need too !
Code:
And may be even prayers for the departed - is it not eevn concievable that some of those who lived in the times of the Aztecs could still be in purgatory and hence could use our prayers - does not St.Padre Pio's history record events of being visited by persons who had died many years ago, coming to ask for prayers !
Dear Lord Jesus Christ, sprinkle your Precious Blood on us all , fill us and surrounds us all and all in our families , all You have given us and all in our lives and those we ought to pray for !

May we be thus cleansed and healed and filled with Your Holy Spirit, through The infinite Merits of Your Passion and Your Merciful Love for us all !

Shalom !

A couple months ago I was in Mexico and took a walk through an area that had representations of the Aztec gods, some were actual archaeological items and others were duplicates. As I was walking I was suddenly overcome with a feeling of despair the like of which I have never experienced in my life. I was sure there was no God and when I died that was it. I literally ran out of the exhibit and once I was out the depair left. Still today two months later the experience scares me and the doubts creep in.

Was this the result of evil spirits or just an over active imagination?
Sounds like an over active imgination to me. Sounds like an anxiety attack. Speak to a doctor.

Even if this experience was the result of an over active imagination, prayers and spiritual devotions will still help.

Although, you are right in suggesting a visit to the doctor if the OP experiences anymore of these “attacks.” As you rightly said, they could be anxiety attacks.

Those links above about Malachi Martin were good. Thanks for that. Helped put my mind at ease. His book really gave me the heebie-jeebies. I do not recommend anyone read it. It’s horrible and in error, according to those links.

Gabriel Amorth is a good read. Interesting to read the opinions and experiences of a working exorcist. But, really, in my opinion, if you’re the nervous type, you want to stay away from demonology unless you have a particular problem you want to research. That stuff can prey on your mind.

As an antidote, I hope to read more on St. Catherine Emmerich and Mary of Agreda. I glanced at their works / bio’s some months ago, and I think they’ll do me nicely now. You can read them online, I think, as they’re out of copyright.

All Catholics should become acquainted with basic demonology as it pertains to spiritual warfare. We need to know about the enemy in order to fight him.

I don’t know about others, but reading about Satan and his minions made me appreciate more fullly the redemptive work of Christ.

The Christian’s life is a battle; a battle against sin, death, and Satan. Make no mistake about it.

Also, it is useful to know about these things in case we ever experience a haunting or a demonic attack. I don’t know about you, but I want to be prepared in case I ever end up being oppressed or if my home appears to be infested with spiritual entities. Many people in my family have lived through a haunting and didn’t really know how to deal with it. I have taken the time to educate myself in case it ever happens to me; I now know what to do, and more importantly, what not to do.

Well, I was think more in terms of dwelling on it, and reading lots of non-authoritative works about it, in the manner of someone curled up a night with a stack of horror novels.

Reading the Malachi Martin book and “Warnings From Beyond” (promoted on the unapproved Bayside website), recently, preyed on my mind. I wanted for anyone reading this to avoid that experience.

C.S. Lewis puts it this way:
“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about demons. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.”
-From The Screwtape Letters
I would think being curled up with a stack of books like Malachi Martin’s would fall into the category of “unhealthy interest.”

I agree that it is wrong to focus on this aspect of the faith. I think it is important to get the balance right.

You need to know about it, but it shouldn’t be the focus of your attention.

I believe an unhealthy interest in the occult or in demons actually opens the door to these beings. You have to be very careful that you don’t accidently invite something into your life. Once you do this, the door is very hard to close.

Certain places where great evil was done have frightening energies/presence around them long after the incidents happened; hence haunted houses, spooky places etc. certainly if human sacrifice ocurred there.

It probably means that you are very attuned to such activity - pleasant/unpleasant - and will pick it up long before any one else.

St Benedict’s medal (blessed)is a great shield in such circumstances or else call (silently) to your Guardian Angel. Many people don’t realize that your angel cannot help you unless summoned. You always have to use your Free Will in all occasions.

Interesting point to make. Aside from the St Michael the Archangel, I have never prayed to my Guardian Angel for protection. I would like to know more about this if you care to share?

I asked a priest of the Opus sanctorum Angelorum if angels and devils could be attached to geographical locations. He said that yes, that just as Angels will stay in holy places, devils will be attached to places of evil.

I have no doubt that devils remain in places of devil worship or where great evil has taken place. Angels and devils operate outside of time as well as in time.

Angels are the messengers of the LORD. If they remain in specific locations, surely it is because God wants them to accomplish someting? I can’t think of a reason for an Angel to remain in a location unless God wanted them to.

I would speculate that Demons remain at locations where horrendous things have happened. You always hear of the locations of murders and suicides being haunted. I don’t know why these evil beings would choose to stay at these locations. Perhaps it’s so that they can continue to torment people? They may have been invited to these locations, and may have decided to stay.

Catholics believe that each soul is given a guardian spirit from birth thru life & after death (they remain with you in Purgatory altho’ obviously they do not suffer).

Many of the saints (e.g St Gemma) conversed freely with their g-angel. Padre Pio often harangued his angel when he appeared too late after he had been afflicted by demons demanding to know why he hadn’t warded the evil spirit off.

Most RC’s when making a difficult choice or indeed any choice whisper silently to their angel asking for advice. They then follow that inner voice/thought which arises.

It is sad that in this super-rational age many people are unaware of this supernational assistance available to them all the time. The prayer to the Guardian angel was once the first prayer that every Catholic child learned.

We always said a prayer to our Guardian Angel when I was a small child at school. Unfortunately, this is a habit that I dropped when I got older.

I regularly pray to the Saints but I think I stopped praying to my Guardian Angel because I know very little about their purpose. Why do we have Guardian Angels? What is their purpose?

Also, I think many people shun the idea of a Guardian Angel because the New Age Movement has claimed the idea for themselves. You always hear them talking about their “spirit guides” and “protecting angels” etc.

I’ve heard the speculation (and it makes sense to me) that an angel remains in places where Mass has been celebrated. Their purpose is to adore Jesus. Since Angels exist outside of time, they can adore Jesus in the Eucharist even though it is a past occurrence.

But, true, it is just speculation.

This is very true, and that’s why we should avoid anything even remotely trying to delve into the supernatural such as seances, ouija boards, tarot cards, palm reading, fortune tellers, astrology, voodoo, santeria, wicca/witchcraft, and of course, satanism.

They say there are countless angels with us at Mass. I think they’re always in Church around the Tabernacle adoring our Lord even when we’ve all gone home. After all, there are a lot of angels.
