Well, Catholics aren’t big on evolution (and I think it’s silly). But there’s nothing inherently contradictory between evolution and original sin.

The Church teaches that God created the first humans. Some people think this was done through the process called evolution. At any rate, once the first humans were created, the story goes on normally - they were given a choice to obey or disobey God, and chose the latter.

In a very over-simplified synopsis, the story of the “fall” can actually be understood as the ascent of Man (evolution) from animal integrity with the environment and/or predominantly right brain perception to the beginnings of subject/object awareness, or left brain perception which is what allows Man’s “dominion” over the creatures of the Earth. It is similar in nature to the Lucifer story, the “fall” of Lucifer, the Light Bearer, in fact being that very mind-sided change wherein the sense of Unity, God, is subverted by subject/object awareness and its exigencies which are necessary for navigating the 4_-D of ordinary perception. The firy sword of the Angel guarding Eden is experienced by those who do the necessary work to re-integrate their mind into a balanced state. A rudimentary explanation of that split is at youtube.com/watch?v=UyyjU8fzEYU&feature=related

Mainstream evolutionary theory (that is, the version which today has the most support in the scientific community) claims that human beings originated through mutations and natural selection from a group of ape-like ancestors. Human beings are genetically adapted apes which emerged through evolutionary (blind, physical, unintelligent, random) processes alone.

Catholic doctrine teaches, de fide, that human beings (by virtue of the soul) are directly created by God and therefore cannot be the product of evolution or physical laws alone.

The sin of Adam and Eve could only be committed by beings with a free-will (humans) – and therefore, only when the rational soul existed. Given that modern evolutionary theory implicitly denies that the immoral soul exists – then evolution cannot provide an explanation for Original Sin and its effect (or precisely when it occurred).

Some Darwinian Catholics deny that there was an Adam and Eve, and therefore that there was an Original Sin. They reconcile evolution and Catholicism by denying the teachings of the Magisterium and compromising their faith to the unproven claims of evolution.

ReggieM, what, if any, is the difference between “God”, “evolution” and “Physical laws?” If God “made” the way things are, then why couldn’t evolution and physical law produce humans? Does God have to stick His finger in the pie to cook it?

All the known physical scientific laws go AGAINST evolution ever starting in the first place.

It fascinates me that the tendency to equate belief, especially religious belief, with knowledge, has such an extreme as is displayed by some creationists. What, if any, difference is there between God and the laws He made called physics and the gift He gave called reason? You use scientific method all the time to get from A to B, and yet you cannot apply the simple rules of critical thinking to your emotional commitment to a thing made of paper and ink. 2+2=4 has one interpretation. Your Bible has as many as there are people who read it. Then of course there are the other Bibles of other faiths each claiming final verity. And yet it doesn’t bother you that you don’t find bunny rabbits along side trilobites. And you don’t find trilobites along side bunny rabbits. Explain please? In my “book” the laws of physics, made by God, and consistent as understood and employed by anyone, trump Biblical interpretations which are random, vague, and unprovable even in many many cases between two people of faith. Why, you even have religions founded on two parts of the same verse, for heaven’s sake! 🙂 As painful as it might be, it might be useful for you to re-examine your criteria of belief.

A very good place to start would be Gina Cerminara’s book on religious sanity, as that is used in many comparative religion courses, despite having a horrible and misleading title. I will send you more information if you wish. I don’t believe you will change your mind in this matter, but at least I can say that I made an effort to give you a hand.

And thank you for the delightful photo of the two wave-jumpers. Where did you take that?

You folks best read the sticky evolution threads are banned. Just saying cuase i don’t want to see anyone getting a temp ban.

Peace all.

Thanks, I see that some others were locked down. Might happen here too. Hot topic, and a cool down might be in order.
