According to a poll on this forum, nearly 75% of Catholics believe in evolution.

At what point (or form of homo sapiens sapiens) did God start putting the soul into the human body?

Does the soul evolve?

God never put a soul into a human body. The soul comes into existance with the body at conception.

I would say the soul “evolves” the closer it gets to God.

I don’t think you get my question. Humans evolved eventually from a common ancestor - at what point did the soul start coming into existence with the physical body?

It wasn’t a gradual thing.

Was Adam a human before God breathed life into him, or was he dirt?
God endowed Adam and Eve with souls. Human beings were never at any point in history without souls.

Can you link to that poll please?

Did it clearly define Catholic from non-catholic members?

This is a diverse group on CAF and unless the poll specifically said Catholic… I wouldn’t say that it was 75% of Catholics.

Well, it depends, if Adam was the first human, and God gave him a soul upon conception, prior to that he wasn’t really human was he?

So humans can still have evolved and God can still give them souls as I have described, without subscribing to creation literalism.

These are deep mysteries, and blessed are you if God reveals these secrets to you.

I would say that God formed a body that was suitable to house his image. One that was capable of bearing the life and characteristics of God in it. For example, no more being eatin, etc.

Yes, it clearly defined Catholic members. Here is the link:

I still don’t think those stats are accurate… the “Catholic” part of the poll question gets kinda lost or hidden in the title… it should have been part of the questions that members tag. Perhaps you could try the poll again yourself and place the “Catholic” part in the question part itself and I think the results will be much different. I think alot of other than Catholics, voted.

The universe was created in statu viae ‘in a state of journeying’ toward an ultimate perfection yet to be attained, to which God has destined it" -Catechism of the Catholic Church

"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved."

Are you suggesting a higher or lower outcome, just out of curiosity?

Could you state your position more clearly, please?
It sounds like you’re saying it’s probable that God created the human race through evolution from a lower common ancestor and decided at some point in time to inject a soul into the human race.

Well, considering that Adam would have been the first human, and that the soul is received upon conception, the God would have given eternal souls to humans. Other things have souls, but not eternal souls. This is what I recall from a short lecture.

As the OP of this thread, I’m sorry if I didn’t make my question more clear. I’m asking, for those Catholics that believe in evolution, at what point did humans get a soul? I would like to keep this thread focused on that. If there is an opinion besides evolution, let’s put that on a different thread.

OK.
Well I believe humans received a soul at the point of Adam’s creation. When God breathed life into inanimate matter he endowed the creation(man) with a physical and spiritual soul.

Evolution is the process God instituted for lower creation to adapt and survive.

Since man is made in God’s image, humans did not evolve from a lower life form. And since God is unchanging, humans do not evolve. Such a process would actually be “devolving” because man would be incrementally creeping further and further away from God’s perfect image.

Ok, I’d like to clarify my question further. This thread is intended for Catholics that believe humans evolved. Please keep the thread focused to that.
