Evolution: Catholic High School

I think if a Catholic goes into a school and kills innocent people, that is completely against the Catholic Faith. There is no support for that.

But I’m just wondering – here a person goes into the school and kills people in the name of evolution. He calls himself a “natural selector” who is “eliminating the unfit”.

That is evolutionary language, and it is actually very much in line with Darwinian theory. One species eliminates the other – kills them off – so the new species can survive. What this school-shooter was saying was a form of eugenics. He decided that some people should be killed because they’re unfit.

Yes, I agree that this is atheistic and amoral. A theistic evolutionist would have to oppose such a thing.

But I do believe that atheists could use evolutionary theory for this kind of killing and it would be perfectly consistent with what Darwinian theory teaches. Here is a person who apparently used evolutionary theory as a reason for killing innocent people. I think it’s hard to say that evolution does not support such a thing.
This is not the first time a crime has been comitted in the name of evolution. The same laywer that defended the man in the scopes trial also defended a murderer, If my memory serves correct. He claimed he was only acting out naturally.

Well, it is in our means to also act “naturally” and either throw that person in jail or execute him in order to protect humanity.

One cannot blame evolution for this.

That’s a good example. The lawyer used science to excuse the crime. Science without morality would do such things. Catholic scientists affirm that science is subject to God and His laws.

Materialistic philosophy is something deserving of blame.

If we live “only naturally”, then we are living for death.
As Catholics, we live to rise above nature – that’s how we receive grace and that is Life.

So a good catholic upbringing should mean good morals.

the laws of universe/nature/god when practised by men (and women) with good morals makes for good stuff.

When practised without good morals we get bad stuff.

So the next question is: is it just a good catholic upbringwhich brings about good morals Or does the rest of society have access to good morals?

are there moral Athesist? anyone found one?

I agree with you Reggie, 100%!!

Yes there are good morals found among non-Catholics, and there are good atheists as well.

Anyone who uses science to answer ethical questions knows little about either.

I think it’s very hard for an atheist to have a consistent moral rule of life. I think an atheist could imitate Christian morals, but materialism or nihilism really has a different foundation. If a person was serious about atheism and all that it means, there would be a totally different morality (we would call it immorality) as a result.
I think some atheists don’t think enough about what life without God really means, and they want to fit in with society. So they borrow Christian morals and try to live by them, even though it’s a contradiction to atheism.

It might be interesting to do a study with professed atheists and professed Christians to see if there is a difference in the degree to which they hold to their morals and ethics.

I’m unaware of any such study. If someone could point me to one, that would at least give me a rational basis to decide.
