Today in the mail I got a newspaper that I never even subscribed to called “Catholic Family News” This is an extreme Traditional Catholic newspaper and on the front page is a story advertising a new book called “EWTN A Network Gone Wrong” by Christopher Ferrara. The newspaper is full of stories about Pope St. Pius X, and how bad Pope John Paul II was, how bad Vatican II was, how bad Pope Benedict XVI new Encyclical is, how bad EWTN is. I was hoping the Society of St. Pius X and the Catholic church would reunite and heal that schism but after reading this I don’t ever see that happening. What is your opinion of these types of papers and how do we keep from getting this junk? I e-mailed them and said I wanted removed from all their mailing lists. I’m sure these stories are on their website. Do a google search for Catrholic Family News and you’ll find it.

Great firewood.
At least you can take the newspapers to a recycling center and save a few trees. 😛

Pray for those who are creating such blasphemy.

Isn’t it strange how these people who would condemn Martin Luther for heresy think they are justified in their own schism?

Yes, that is pretty amazing how someone can see others like Luther and Calvin as heretics and then create schism and not see them selves as heretics. The SSPX is just as schismatic or heretical as the reformers were.

It’s all those liberals like Fr. Corpari and Mother Angela that are causing the problems at ETWN. Oh wait…

All we can do is pray for the SSPX types and they’ll come around. Meanwhile, continue to thank God daily for everything EWTN has done for our faith in America.

Well, if they are liberal, I would be more than proud to be called so…😃

The book was obviously written by a fanatical traditionalist, possibly a SSPXer. Abbott’s article appears to be more rational than the book. If nobody buys the book, it will fade away into nothingness which, in my opinion, is where it belongs.

I somehow got on their mailing list, too. I suspect someone sold their mailing list. Or a buyer sold it to them.

I get This Rock, Our Sunday Visitor, and Crisis. How about you?

I ordered the Liguorian and got this same newspaper a few weeks later. What gives?

Somebody at EWTN should look into it and at least make a disclaimer. If I had not realized that this was a schismatic group who had printed it, I might have been very misled.

Hopefully someone at EWTN will notice this thread.

Sometimes someone leaves an organization, and takes mailing lists with them. I doubt any of those magazines that you subscribe to would knowingly sell your info. I am apart of a MOMS Club in my area and a person from a modeling agency (more like give us money to take pictures of your kids and pay for classes that ‘teach’ your kid how to act and model but never get your kid a job agency) and we figured out that a person had taken our Clubs mailing list after they left the club and gave it to the agency.

You should just e-mail EWTN with a link to this thread.

Out of pure curiosity about Traditionalism, I subscribed to Catholic Family News and another traditionalist newspaper called THE REMNANT. My subscription to THE REMNANT has not run out yet, so I got a recent issue which profiled EWTN - A NETWORK GONE WRONG. Personally, I found the article to misrepresent the overwhelming bulk of good vieweing you’ll find on EWTN, a network I still donate to.
I like EWTN.
As for CATHOLIC FAMILY NEWS, it is owned by Father Gruner’s ministry.

Love,

Could someone shed some light on this Traditionalist? I have read the blurbs on Mother Angelica and it seems that they are upset that she was forced to remove herself because of liberal people inside the church. Am I missing something here?

I had someone try to foist these publications off on me. I tried to read a little of them, but they were so venomous, I just couldn’t do it. I had to throw them out. I know several people who think this way and belong to the SSPX. I think it is very sad, and I pray for them all the time.
EWTN is aware of this book. They have some copies floating around, according to Fr. Mitch Pacwa on Open Line today. A couple of people called in about it. You can be sure they are aware of this attack and will respond appropriately, (which may very well be to ignore it). God Bless EWTN!! EWTN radio and television have been extremely instumental in my reversion to the Faith! It is difficult to see people attack them.

Contrary to a lot of popular opinion, I was very troubled about Mother Angelica’s rantings in the last ten years of her television career.

I only had a vague idea that she was ranting about liberals, which I could understand to a great extent from my own experience, but I did not have the insight into all her issues.

I’m telling you, I predicted that there was going to be a book like this about EWTN. I just couldn’t predict when and where and by whom. This book seems to chronicle what I didn’t like about EWTN – particularly Mother Angelica’s rantings. I could understand her ranting about the women priests who were making up their own liturgies, but I couldn’t understand why Mother Angelica was so hot about these things and spilling this stuff in family programs. In part, I disliked it because she was preaching to the choir. (I suppose the real issue is the real and perceived liberal drift of the bishops in the U.S.)

I had a much more pedestrian complaint about EWTN – The Eternal Word Television Network – they seemed to spend precious little time on guess what ? The Eternal Word itself. Fr. Pacwa had a bible -oriented program for a while before he became the anchor that he is now. I don’t think he did a very good job at it, like it was a special production, and not a daily sort of thing you might expect from the “eternal word” television network.

I don’t like all the commercial-like announcements on the network.

I started a separate thread on how to improve EWTN. Actually, that is one of my beefs, to wit, that the people there act like they don’t need any suggestions.

I am tired of the deep traditionalists who just keep whining about not having the Latin Mass. I liked TLM and didn’t have any trouble with it. What I don’t like, is how banal the English Mass became. There doesn’t seem to be the revolution in quality music that I expected forty years ago. That’s rreally the ‘failure to thrive’ of the English Mass.

What a lot of people disliked about the English mass, and they don’t talk about it anymore, are all the ‘pauses’ that were interjected in the Mass. These were supposed to be moments of meditation or reflection, and these have mercifully been whittled down. But, the point is, there was a meaningful liturgy before in Latin without the pauses, and we never had any trouble meditating on what was going on.

So, we had these ‘pauses’ foisted on us, and then came the endless other changes about standing, sitting, or kneeling, with standing suddenly becoming the declared winner. And why? Because the Mass was becoming so boring, that they had to do something to keep people awake. People were falling asleep in the pauses!

I would revise my comments about M. Angelica by saying that I was annoyed that I couldn’t figure out her agenda. I just got tired of hearing her complain. I just couldn’t get excited the way she did, about whether the priest said “Dominus vobiscum” or “The Lord be with You”. That just did not hit any hot button with me.

I might agree that EWTN as a evangelization has become EWTN the business.

I don’t quite understand your objection. Are you saying Mother Angelica was too conservative?

I am curious as to who you think does a better job. I happen to work for Catholic radio, listen quite extensively to the programming, and it is top-notch, solid Catholic teaching. Would you prefer a channel that only talked about the Bible? That channel wouldn’t last more than a month.

EWTN does an exceptional job in their capacity. Period.
I don’t like all the commercial-like announcements on the network.
It is my understanding that a television network is not allowed to run 24 hours of straight programming. There are required to be breaks and station identifications. Would you prefer they just left the screen black during these times?

I read that thread and there weren’t may substantial suggestions. They are doing a fantastic job.

What is better than the 2000 years of Sacred Music already established by some of the world’s most talented musicians? The only real “failure” of the “English Mass” is the ludicrous idea that people today can produce a more beautiful liturgy by canning 2000 years of development. They’ve failed miserably because it can’t be done.

Is this a problem with EWTN or post-Vatican II liturgy? If anything, EWTN has done an exceptional job fighting the tide of rancid liturgy and abuse. You’re losing your focus a bit and the thread is almost hijacked…

Her “agenda” was proclaiming the Truth despite priest and Bishops that fought against her, tooth and nail. If you want to understand why she is the way she is, read her biography by Dr. Raymond Arroyo. You will be able to understand a lot more about her and her struggles.
I might agree that EWTN as a evangelization has become EWTN the business.
In what ways have they “sold out” might I ask? They have not sacrificed anything for the sake of the almighty dollar.
