EWTN - on Frank Duff last night was "special"

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I hope many of you were able to watch the EWTN Gallery last night which featured the life and cause for sainthhod of Servant of God, Frank Duff. Since it was only 30 minutes long, it could not cover the fullness of God’s work in this holy man, but the actual photos and some clips from a video-taped interview with Frank Duff gave us an even greater appreciation for his holiness, than what some may already have had from reading works by or about Frank Duff, founder of the Legion of Mary.

My favorite part of the program was toward the end when Fr. Bede McGregor, Spiritual Director of the Legion of Mary at the Headquarters in Dublin, and also the Postulator for the cause of Frank Duff shared some words spoken by a man in one of the hostels in Ireland. Father explained to the man that he was seeking testimonies for the Vatican and he needed the man to swear on the Bible that anything he said concerning Frank was true. Father added that the man was an alcoholic and had lived a tragic life. The man agreed and then he said these beautiful words:

Frank Duff was the only man who ever looked up to me.

Those words brought tears to my eyes because it seems to tell the depth of humility in the heart of Frank Duff. Frank Duff had such reverence for the Mystical Body of Christ, to which this poor man belonged! I continue to ponder these words as I examine my own conscience on how I look upon others.

I recently listened to a wonderful, rambling, perfect homily on how Jesus’ love for us has to emanate from us towards others. I posted this elsewhere, but its worth repeating,

Hebrews 13:1-2
Let brotherly love continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

If in the face of others we do not see the eyes of Jesus looking back at us, what are we?

I am still haunted by the reaction of someone I hold dear, when a homeless gentleman who infrequently visits our parish, was hugging everyone. She got angry with him. I have not seen him since. I saw the eyes of Jesus in his eyes.

I have neglected to pray for him, I need to start doing that.

Dear Casilda,

Yes, do start to pray for him and keep praying for that man, whom God revealed to you. As Frank Duff “looked up to” the poor man in the hostel, so we need to “see by faith” Jesus in what Bl. Teresa of Calcutta called “His distressing disguise in the poor”.

Thanks for your reply. We all need to be reminded of God’s Word: “Let brotherly Love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers…” in Heb. 13: 1-2. That “hospitality” can be as simple as a smile of recognition instead of turning away, or worse getting angry with someone in need of a hug or any sign of being loved.

The program last night helped me to further identify Servant of God Frank Duff with Mother Teresa, as one who believed and lived deeply the Truth of Jesus’ words: “Whatever you do for the least of my brethren, you do for Me.”
