EWTN - The Light of the Church Today

EWTN is a blessing for our Church; Catholic Apologetics, Sacred Scripture, Moral Theology, Liturgy and Sacraments, our spirituality, children, Teens, and seriously addresses relevant Catholic issues.

The Mass, Benediction, Devotions, Mother Angelica, Life on the Rock, The Journey Home, The World Over, Sunday Nite live with Fr. Groeschel and Fr. Corapi and the Catechism of the Catholic Church are but a few of my favorites. Add in Scott Hahn and many more Catholic favorites and this is a Catholic treasure.

This is not a EWTN promotion or commercial, however, I strongly recommend it for family viewing. I am interested in how many have EWTN available in their TV viewing area and how many actually watch EWTN. Do you agree with my overall statement?

When I lived in the dorms, I had cable and would watch EWTN pretty often (considering I don’t watch much TV). They have great programming. EWTN has done a great deal to promote the Faith in the United States. I love watching Fr. Corapi, and Bob and Penny Lord’s shows, and of course Mother Angelica. I don’t like watching their Masses for some reason- probably because actually going to Mass is so much better and so it is kind of a let-down (plus I don’t know the words to the hymns they sing).
 
haha EWTN is all I watch on TV. Everything else is garbage pretty much (minus Seinfeld and Family Guy). 😉
 
EWTN is a blessing, a real blessing. It is either that or Sesame Street for my family:) and some of Sesame Street we even have to turn off, like when Elmo dresses as a girl or those two homosexual men and their adopted daughter all three lick the ice cream cone in the family episode of Elmo’s world. Anyway this is not about Elmo so let’s move on.

My wife watches EWTN every day, it is her link to daily Mass here since we attend a TLM parish 40 miles from our home. At least some of the Mass there on EWTN is in Latin and my two year old can already make the Latin response, “Et cum spiritu tuo”!

About 17 years ago I saw Mother Angelica on Television and all that channel had to offer and I came back to the Church after many years of being away. Mother Angelica and EWTN have been an extreme help to my family- and you can tell in my extended family who watches EWTN because we all here in my house know our faith better.

Unlike a previous post here I find the Mass on EWTN very much uplifting and when I attend the Novus Ordo parish here due to not being able to travel to my parish in Berlin it makes the local N.O. Mass look very profane indeed with their guitar strumming, lack of appropriate vestments, lack of Latin in the liturgy, priest wearing sandals, everyone dressing like they are at a barbecue…you name it.

I will take how the Mass is done on EWTN any day over how Mass is done at the local parish. THEY should watch EWTN more and learn from them how to do things more reverently. (Yet I remember, and I am sure most of you do also when there was much more Latin used in the Mass on EWTN and the priest and people faced the same direction- then came Bishop Foley who ordered changes to facing the people and very few parts in Latin)

We have it in SE Texas and I’m listening to it now as I play on my computer. Find it very informative but I don’t really care for the old, old movies they show sometimes. The only reason I have cable is for EWTN.

Our area does not have the TLM Mass so EWTN is the Mass we watch 7 days a week. I also like the specials they have concerning the Pope and USCCB conference. It is a shame that our pastor never mentions the benefits in his homily and the benefits it serves the sick and homebound. Many of the EMHC’s time there distribution of the Blessed Sacrament around the EWTN Mass. We are lucky because both cable system locally carry EWTN 24/7.

I would like to receive some replies from the religious and priest concerning EWTN.

If you have children this will be a blessing for them. The do carry after school shows timed for when the little get home. My wife and I would be lost without it. I do watch sports but normally EWTN comes first.
 
True Story…

In early 2001 when my marriage was just getting underway and soon after we had just received our second blessing from heaven, my wife and I decided to celebrate “my” NY Giants third Super Bowl appearance by staying the local Holiday Inn in Destin Florida. I was no longer an avid fan (three tears after my reversion)but in some nostalgic way, it seemed the right thing to do at the time.

Well after a memorable sunset walk on the sugar coated beach of the Emerald Coast, with the little ones in snuggled in our arms we had to get down to business, so we made our way up to room, popped some corn, and hopped into the big cozy bed for “the event.”

Twenty minutes later and we had had it…the commericals from hell had forced us to be constantly on guard, hitting the remote to find a safe haven, to protect the boys’ innocent eyes from exposure to sin. We found relief at the local real estate channel but this was not the fun and excitement what we had in mind when the evening started.

To be honest with you, the game was getting me way too anxious and being a fan had lost its appeal…

What were we to do? …the only faithful, reasonable thing we could do…we switched to EWTN.

Well as God’s Providence would have it, we turned right when EWTN began a special on St. John Vianney and my 18 month old, John Michael was clearly moved when St. Michael (his guardian angel) was highlighted in the documantary. He was jumping for pure joy and beaming with light and peace.

Might the sudden lack of violence…keeping the Lord’s Day holy have something to do with his response???

Well after this wonderful documentary was over I looked at my wife Jen and posed the question, "Should we “turn back?”

Feeling a little sheepish, and a little like Lot’s wife, I did…to take a peek.

…and as if God was waiting for this, we immediately witnessed “in mid stream” the Baltimore Ravens long touchdown run that confirmed the blow out loss that was occuring.

With this sign we turned back for good, and so we spent the rest of this mini vacation with “old reliable” EWTN keeping us company.

Ever since that day, when the family is on the road, John and his little brother Joe have two questions to ask when their droopy heads tell them it’s time to hunker down for the night…

Does the motel have a cozy bed?
Does it have EWTN?

God bless Mother Angelica and the entire Franciscan family for teaching us what is important in life…true humility.

First I would like to say I really enjoy EWTN and I do listen to it on SW. (Im cheap and prefer to buy a book then pay for mind numbing cable, Yes I know Im a freak 😛 ) Yet ever since I read the story of EWTN and Mother Angelica, Im not sure its the right thing for me because of the “disrespect” or “lack humility” she showed towards the USCCB. I know they have their problems but God did put them in charge of us. So now I worry that maybe EWTN is going to lose its direction or already lost it without our shepards in charge of it. (Just my thoughts, Im not attacking either Mother Angelica or our bishops)

For those who don’t know, EWTN is carried on the DirecTV satellite, channel 422.

We watch it often, but my beef is that the prime time live stuff comes on at 5pm here (while I’m on my way home from work). This also includes the kid shows, which air at noon here (when kids are in school!).

On a recent trip to Atlanta, we made a special trip to the Chapel in Irondale, it’s so much better to see it in person, yet so tiny.

What we resort to, ultimately, is support those we enjoy watching by buying their CDs and DVDs (such as Fr. Corapi).

It’s available, but I don’t have pay tv.

I agree with your overall statement. I use most of their online resources along with countless others.

Without such easy internet access to information, I don’t know where I’d be.
 
Now that I’ve upgraded my internet I can actually watch it on my puter all the way from the other side of the world without forking out for worthless cable tv!!! Yay!

I loved the sung Divine Mercy Chaplet they had earlier, and the Rosary with all the different people saying it in different languages. Just saw my first Mass as well - interesting, good homily, lovely singing, but I agree Mass is always better in person 😉

Amen to this!! I was never a fan of Bp. Foley, even when he hosted the Monday evening Catechism series. I always felt he defended too many liturgical abuses by giving priests the benefit of the doubt and essentially pooh-poohing the complainer’s call.

Another abomination from the local hierarchy was that this Mass COULD have been given a dispensation from using the God-awful NAB lectionary foisted on the rest of us. It was a treat to hear the readings from the Jerusalem Bible; where else in the USA could you hear these?

When the choir starts singing “Let There Be Peace on Earth” I’ll know the heretics have infiltrated EWTN and my contributions will cease!

As one could say in Chinese, “Sum ting wong”. Thanks, Bishop Foley. :mad:

Listen: the USCCB has done little to earn respect. (Can you say “Cardinal Mahony” or “Bishop Foley”?) Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington, DC is an exception. But I’d side with Mother ANY day against some of these “shepherds”. Do I sound angry?

Once Mother was incapacitated, the televised Mass took a slight downturn - less Latin, priest facing the people, use of the God-awful NAB lectionary. I’ll bet the USCCB would just LOVE to seize control of EWTN, as they were unsuccessful at setting up their own cable/satellite channel with the worldwide appeal of EWTN.
 
EWTN should be required viewing for all RCIA students.

I watched 4-6 hours a day when I was in RCIA. It was priceless in my preparation to enter the Church. I would have been lost without it. By watching it on Sunday morning, I gets me very focused for Mass.

I like EWTN, but it has its favorites and biases that are puzzling to me.

I don’t think it gives enough attention to the Bible. You just get pieces of Bible commentary here and there.

If I’m whining, then so be it. But, show me where EWTN produces a regular program where it reads the Bible and explains it according to the Catechism. Which is to say, to give the literal, allegorical, moral, and anagogical senses of the scripture.

The Reformation split the Church, largely over authority and the interpretation of the Bible.

I know, “just gag me.” Who would watch such a program? OK, put it on in the middle of the night, and I’ll tape it. But, if EWTN really has anything to do with the eternal word, I think it’s time to put their collective foot forward on this subject.

I would watch it and record for future reference.

In my opinion, it goes back to the long debated issue that Catholics focus more on the Catechism than on Sacred Scripture. I understand that a large part of the Catechism comes from Sacred Scripture, but I want to know SS in detail anyway.
