*“Catholicism needs to provide a big tent, allowing more freedom when it comes to some matters of doctrine.” *

Care to expound on the “big tent more freedom” comment?

" “Journey Home”. I know the host tries to sound moderate, but most of the time it is bent on not-so-subtly assailing Protestantism in one form or another. We live in an ecumenical age. Since Vatican II there has been a new sense of fellowship among most Christians. Why mess it up by featuring those who leave one Christian group for another?"

Marcus Grodi was a protestant minister, as are the majority of his convert guests. They gave up pastoral jobs, secure incomes, parishes, friends, etc to convert.

Yes, I know that Marcus Grodi was a Presbyterian minister. It took courage to change churches. But that doesn’t bear on the points I was trying to make. This continual Protestant-bashing just increases bitterness on both sides.
We all know that Protestants who have become Catholic and Catholics who have become Protestant. Different strokes for different folks. One of the ministers near here was a former Catholic priest, and several evangelical ministers (Spanish and Italian backgrounds) were formerly Catholic. If Protestants were to lift them up as proof of something I would be annoyed. And I am annoyed with "Journey Home".

My sister worships at a protestant denomination church because she uses ABC and she supports gay marriage because she has a friend who is a partnered lesbian.

Is that the “big tent” you’re suggesting.

My problem with EWTN is the lack of new programming. Fr. Corapi’s Catechism was done about 8 years ago. If you look at the dates of some of the other programs you would see the same thing. I don’t like “Women of Grace” either but that is because I guess I don’t like the style, etc. To me, EWTN’s programming is becoming very boring. I only watch it to tape Bishop Sheen. I wish they would expand themselves. How about having a show reviewing movies or other cultural stuff? Must it always be apologetics? I understand that there is a severe need for catechism, etc but it can be very tiresome. What about changing the culture? I miss having Thomas Howard on or even Deal Hudson. He had a good show. Also, I miss Fr. Rutler. I want more intellectually stimulating programs or ones that are educational on history, culture, etc. There needs to be more of those.

…In conclusion, I chatted with two priests fairly recently. I mentioned EWTN, just to get their reaction. One said he never watched it. He was embarrassed by it and wish it would go away. The other said whenever he watched it he had trouble sleeping that night!
There was a lot in your post that could be addressed, but this is by far the funniest bit. I hope they’re not as dainty in real life as you make them sound!

I get it, though, you’re “liberal” and EWTN is “conservative”. You can’t recommend it to other “liberals”. 👍

“Also, I miss Fr. Rutler.” I love his dry humor.

I watched his rerun “Christ in the City” last night.

Does he have a photographic memory?

Okay. Let me respectfully dissent.

I have watched many hours of EWTN - and still do. But I see it as the ‘Old Guard’ within Catholicism. Much that is good is presented, but the overall impression I get is that the Church needs to remain pat, resist any and all change, and even turn the clock back aways.
Code:
Let me cite three programs that trouble me. One is 'Women of Grace'. I know the women leader means well, but she is too dogmatic. I have been especially perturbed by those guests who have so strongly condemned other groups. Take the Masons. I'm not interested in defending the Masons, but why alienate so many by launching such questionable attacks on them? These accusations may have been justified in Europe 200-300 years ago, but we live in the USA in 2010, and the Masons are among our leading citizens and they do wonderful work through their 22 Shriner Hospitals and other humanitarian efforts. And they take, for example, children of any faith, whether or not the families can pay, and for however long it takes to heal them. They should be respected instead of attacked so viciously.

Second, "Journey Home". I know the host tries to sound moderate, but most of the time it is bent on not-so-subtly assailing Protestantism in one form or another. Gosh, the Reformation happened nearly 500 years ago. We live in an ecumenical age. Since Vatican II there has been a new sense of fellowship among most Christians. Why mess it up by featuring those who leave one Christian group for another? Besides, around here at least, there seems to be a major exodus from Catholicism. especially to evangelical groups. And a number of their prominent ministers are former Catholics.

Third, Fr. Corapi. Yes, I know. He tells it like it is. And he tries to sound humble. And he's a powerful speaker with an agile mind and a large supply of knowledge. But I hear, also, an arrogance that can sound offensive. He preaches the old Catholicism that emphasized unquestioning obedience to the Church. Hey, we live in 2010 and Americans are much better educated and most of them, especially the young, are turned off when they are told that they must obey Mother Church. He doesappeal to the militants who place their tribal loyalty above everything, but this can be alienating, too. At least to me. I much prefer, say, a Fr. Benedict and others. Oh, I'm not all that swayed by Scott Hahn. He certainly can pour forth with doctrines and history, but .... well, again, too dogmatic for me.

We need to understand that his world is a big place, maybe a billion solar systems, and certainly filled with magnificence and majesty and mystery. We need to be tolerant of those who can't accept each and every story they hear on EWTN. When I hear the Lords, for example, and some of the miracles they attribute to various saints I want to cry out: "Please, give me a break!" St. Padre Pio levitated and bilocated? I have trouble with tales like that, and I suspect that millions in the Church feel as I do.

Catholicism needs to provide a big tent, allowing more freedom when it comes to some matters of doctrine.

In conclusion, I chatted with two priests fairly recently. I mentioned EWTN, just to get their reaction. One said he never watched it. He was embarrassed by it and wish it would go away. The other said whenever he watched it he had trouble sleeping that night!

Oh, nothing personal in this. I certainly respect the devotion and diligence and creativity of Mother Angelica, but I must, in all honesty, question the overall tenor of EWTN. It could present such a positive view of Catholicism instead of spending so much time sounding defensive and arbitrary.
In many ways from what I hear of it (never watched it, I don’t watch TV) by folks around here, it seems to reflect the overall values of this website, which sadly, I have to say is often long on dogma but short on love and mercy.

You can’t be a Catholic Christian with one, without the other:
If I speak in human and angelic tongues 2 but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.
And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.
If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated,
it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.
It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing.
For we know partially and we prophesy partially,
but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things.
At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known.
So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
(1 Cor 13: 1-13)

When adding your comments to a post, your opinion would be more resounding had you at least once watched EWTN.

Are you in the habit of being led around by the opinion of other “folks” ?

I figured out what NFP stands for, but what does ABC stand for?

Thanks in advance.
🙂

I couldn’t watch it even if I wanted to as I’m in Canada, and my satellite provider doesn’t carry it in my area. I don’t watch video on-line on account of a too slow internet connection.

But believe it or not even though I am in the boonies of Canada, I have heard of EWTN and Mother Angelica. I can also infer a lot by reading the posts here from the EWTN cheerleaders.

And to be frank that sort of spirituality is not my cup of tea. I am much happier listening to Radio Ville-Marie, our French Catholic radio network up here, that seems much more… well Catholic in that it is universal (it won’t tell anyone they’re not Catholic because they disagree with the Church on this or that point, unlike many I have read on this website), much more ecumenical, and not afraid to present some ideas that, while I may not agree with them, at least give food for thought.

Because I am secure enough in my faith to not feel threatened by those with different opinions than mine or by lukewarm Catholics. After all it’s part of my daily life as I am married to an evangelical Protestant, and I am also a Benedictine Oblate affiliated to a monastery that will never turn anyone away from their door, regardless of their religious beliefs.

In case you might be curious in the future, EWTN has a YouTube channel that plays a lot of their shows the next day: youtube.com/user/EWTN

Enjoy. 🙂

I am sure most of you are familiar with the promise of Jesus concerning that the Gates of Hell would not prevail against the Church he founded through St. Peter. (Matthew 16:18)

Mother Angelica was called by God to build a television network that would send a faithful representation of Catholic teaching throughout the ends of the earth. That is part of her testimony and when the facts are examined, it would have been completely impossible for this to be accomplished by any other means other than the direct and providential help from Jesus. Try to explain how any single person with no money and living a life of poverty would be able to put together a Television and Shortwave broadcasting company that is worth close to a Billion dollars, and now broadcasts to multitudes. This was accomplished entirely through the providence of our Lord and not one dime of support from the Church. In fact many people in high positions tried to discourage Mother and even tried to remove control of the network that she was allowed to build through her love and devotion to our Lord.

Through out the ages since the founding of the Catholic Church our Lord has worked in various ways to maintain His Church and EWTN is a very visible example of His work, at least for those with eyes to see.

If EWTN would not have had the very powerful effect it has on the Church, you most likely would have seen a much weaker liberalized protestant version of the Church that has existed for over 2000 years. Of course this will never happen because our Lord never sleeps and His eye is always on His Church.

There always have been people inside and outside of the Catholic Church that are its enemies, sadly most of the time they don’t realize what they are doing. Without the humility to say Yes Lord to all that Jesus asks of those who call ourselves Catholic or Christian there will always be the necessity for our Lord to act in order to stabilize His Church so that it will continue in its proper direction under His continuing watchfulness.

Thank You Lord for Mother Angelica and the Global Catholic Television and Shortwave Network that You created through her love obedience and to you !

Nonsense. The US Church is not the Church. Maybe the US Church would have been more “Protestantized”. But you’re a drop in the sea actually: 70 million among 1 billion, or 7% of the total. Yes, it is still 4th largest Catholic population in the world, but it is still only 7% of the total.

How, pray tell, do the rest of the world’s Catholics (93%) manage without EWTN???

I don’t have TV, so I watch EWTN on my computer. But only during ‘library hours and bookstore hours’ (I have no Internet at home, either).

As regards programming, I’d wish they would have one on Catholics who end up being single all their lives…like me! :o The programming that’s on is geared mostly to married people, families with children.

I don’t watch ‘Women of Grace’; it kind of grates my teeth. I’m just an ordinary middle-aged Catholic woman trying to survive alone in the world. I don’t have organizing abilities for putting a discussion group together. I also get annoyed at hearing people prattle on about ‘what the Lord has done for me.’ Sounds too Protestant for my blood…I prefer being solitary and alone.

You made my day with this message. I would love to be in attendance when Mother Angelica meets her Maker. The heavens will surely resound with cheers of joy. The embrace she will receive by the Lord will tell her how welcome she is. That will be a very well-deserved, joyous homecoming. I will never forget how the Lord came to her rescue when even a Cardinal tried to oust her from EWTN. Her healing then was truly instantaneous and miraculous. She will hear the words, “Welcome my good and faithful servant.”

Amen to that! 👍

I got to meet Mother Angelica on my first trip to EWTN in 1998, just a few months after she was cured. When she walked into the studio before her live program, it was electric…almost as if the Holy Father himself was coming in! I even shook her hand when she met members of the studio audience.

Afterwards, the group I was with got to talk with her and pose for pictures. We even gave her a large Tupperware container of Italian cookies!

She will certainly receive a ‘royal welcome’ from Our Lord when she leaves this earth!

Amen! Praise the Lord for faithful solidly orthodox nuns like Mother Angelica who have taken up the labor that the Lord has gifted them with.

EWTN has always been solidly orthodox in what is taught on all their programs. I challenge anyone to find something in their programming that is not orthodox or that is contrary to Church teaching. The American Church desperately needs this network to continue presenting solid Orthodox and truly Catholic teaching to viewers, and make it available to all audiences.

I am very thankful for EWTN, God has used it to bring me on the path to conversion.

This seems like EWTN is working within the Church, but outside the lines so to speak. I become more aggrevated listening to EWTN, not so much for the content, as for why nothing like this was ever heard within the local parish. This puzzles me because I become annoyed through memories of the past in light of what is heard today.

There were too many posts and I don’t have time to read each of them. This may have been answered. I apologize for the redundancy, if I’m repeating what has been said.

EWTN was founded by the Poor Clares, with Mother Angelica at the head. If we fast-forward, Mother Angelica returns to her life as the superior of her community and EWTN’s administration is handed over to a lay board, but always under the vigilance of the Franciscan community. That should answer the question about monitoring. The Franciscans do not need the monitoring of the bishops, because the five obediences are under the jurisdiction of priests or lay brothers who have the same power as bishops. They do not have the sacramental powers, but they have to gubernatorial powers. In addition, the lay board has been erected as a public association of the lay faithful under the jurisdiction of the local bishop. There is a lot of oversight.

Not every program that you see via EWTN is produced by them or owned by them. They serve as a carrier as well as producers. For example, “Women of Grace” is not owned by EWTN. It is another public association of the faithful based on the Diocese of Palm Beach.
Recently, I posted a question about whether Mass can be canceled for holidays like Veterans Day, as though Mass was like banker hours. This puzzled me from a distance when looking at the parish website and schedule. This just reinforced my suspicion that the parish is Catholic in name only.
This should not happen. But it can happen and it is not illegal. There are times when there are no priests to celebrate a mass, for whatever reason. It may be something as simple as Father being away for the day. The parish has to provide mass on Sundays. That’s law.

I know that our guys close down the parish when we have community meetings, unless they can get a priest to cover them. The community meeting takes priority over the parish. That’s because we’re religious.
A few years ago, a priest from another parish within the city was killed flying his private plane to vacation in Florida for the winter. I could not fanthom a priest flying to pick up his buddies to go vacationing in Florida. How many people can fly privately like that? .
This has nothing to do with EWTN, but just to clarify, the priest in this accident was a diocesan priest. Diocesan priests are not consecrated religious. They are secular men. They do not make any vows. They promise obedience to their bishop on pastoral matters only. They also promise to remain celibate, not the same as the vow of chastity made by religious, which implies community life. Any diocesan priest can have as much money as he can make through honest means. This may be through his work or it can be a family inheritance. He may come from a wealthy family. If I were not a Franciscan, if I were Donald Trump’s son, and if I wanted to be a priest, I could join a diocese and I would still have my father’s money. There is no prohibition in Church law on this matter. That’s also a lot of ifs. LOL

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
