HI,
Has any one read the book: EWTN A Network Gone Wrong by Christopher A. Ferrara?

If so did you like it or not?

Jeanne

I read part… It’s a very slanted pre-Vatican II view of EWTN… A lot of what was said about Scott Hahn, and others have had their speeches and teachings taken out of context.

The book has some truth… But is very anti Vatican II

Going back to a pre Vatican II era would be like throwing the baby out with the bath water… A lot of good has come from Vatican II while a lot of old traditions could be reinstated in the USA… I like communion rails, where you kneel to receive… I don’t like the express line to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus.… Like Mother Angelica said “Scripture teaches us that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, and here we are the the presents of Jesus and we stand to receive Him”

Something that trumps Ferrerra’s opinion:

"Irondale, AL (EWTN) –Pope Benedict XVI has awarded EWTN foundress, Mother Mary Angelica, and Deacon Bill Steltemeier, Chairman of EWTN’s Board of Governors, the Cross of Honor for distinguished service to the Church.

The medal,
officially known as “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” (literally “For the Church and the Pope”), is the highest honor that the Pope can bestow upon laity and religious. Bishop Robert J. Baker of Birmingham conferred the awards in a brief ceremony following Sunday benediction at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama.

“The Holy Father’s recognition of Mother Angelica and Deacon Bill Steltemeier is a much-deserved honor. It acknowledges the tremendous faith, hard work and incredible sacrifices that each of them have made throughout the years in founding and building up the Network,” said EWTN President and CEO Michael P. Warsaw.

“Their recognition is also a great honor for EWTN and is a clear sign of the importance of the Network’s mission for the Church and the Pope. We are grateful to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI and to Bishop Baker for this honor.”"

It’s the sort of thing I choose to avoid just because of the controversies surrounding it. Isn’t Ferrara connected with that Fr. Nicholas Gruener?

Is he the priest connected to Fatima?

EWTN just hasn’t been the same since Mother relinquished the reins.

I’m not sure if he’s a no-no to mention on CAF, but all I’ll say is look him up and you’ll see why.

I still love EWTN, but I don’t watch too many of the new shows. I do like the documentaries and some of the old stand-bys as far as series are concerned.

I looked him up. There are pros and cons. To me he sounds like a traditionalist as am I. Anyway, I can see how CA would not like us chatting about him, so I will not any more.
. A while back I started watching a very good show on EWTN that was a chapter by chapter commentary on the gospel according to Matthew. It was on for a few weeks then it was gone and I never found it again. This has happened a few times so I have stopped watching the network.

I don’t think EWTN is as Catholic as it was under Mother’s hands.

Anyway, I thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut.
God Bless
Jeanne

no and I don’t plan on it. one of the ugliest most acrimonious threads ever to disgrace these forums was the topic of your question, so I can only hope this thread gets buried quickly. the author has no credibility so there is no reason to read the book

I have noticed several times that it can be hard to find programming and/or what is listed on my “dishnetwork” program guide is not what is actually on. I’ve tried using the programming grids on the EWTN website but frankly they are a bit “clunky”. I’ve even e-mailed EWTN my concern on this…
But these are technical matters that, while regrettable certainly don’t effect the orthodoxy of the content of the programming
I don’t think EWTN is as Catholic as it was under Mother’s hands.
So long as the Network proclaims the teachings for the Church it is “As Catholic” as need be.
My guess is that your comment comes less from the idea that EWTN is not orthodox and more from the idea that EWTN does not share and promote the more “traditional view” that you hold.
Don’t take this as a swipe at you - Each of us bring our own particular viewpoint to any discussion.
Personally I find a lot of the programming to not talk to me directly. This does not make the programming bad or “less catholic”, it just doesn’t appeal to my particular age, stage in life and spiritual journey, interests etc.

For all that though, I love EWTN and Praise God that we have it. 👍

Peace
James

I love EWTN. I learned the Rosary from Mother Angelica and still often pray it with her.

One of my favorite programs is The Journey Home. Another great one is Crossing the Goal.

You can live stream the live programs and they have Open Line on the radio as well.

Journey Home is great. I Love it too.

I also like the various documentaries and movies, Fulton Sheen, and Sister Ann (Loretta Young) when I can catch them.
I like crossing the Goal. I guess I don’t watch it much because it really doesn’t speak to where I am in my journey.

Peace

In your open minded opinion of course. Read it or not it is your choice. Now I know that the book is not recommended. I see nothing wrong with the question .

Jeanne,

Set your DVR to “Record All”. You’re missing out on a lot of great Catholic programming.

EWTN has a YouTube Channel which plays most of it’s show from the night before:

youtube.com/user/EWTN

I love The Journey Home, Rosary in the Holy Land with Fr Mitch Pacwa, EWTN Live among others.

I’d say try a search for that tv series on St Mathew on YouTube. Maybe it’s out there somewhere.

Fireman, I jokingly refer to Fr. Pacwa’s rosary as speed praying. I have been told that Mother Angelica’s is too slow. 😃

LOL…yes and yes. 😃

In the beginning I couldn’t stand Fr Pacwa’s version simply because the people who were praying with him are out of sync with each other. I finally decided that I love the scenery. I especially love the Glorious Mysteries. That being said…the out of sync praying still gets to me at times (I kind of got used to the “speed praying”…he slowed down for the newer Luminous Mysteries).

Fireman, I’ve never heard him on the Luminous mysteries. I do love the scenery in his rosary though and since i get up at o’dark thirty I have time to listen before leaving for work. (I don’t listen often enough I guess)

Which reminds me. I lost my job on Thursday and I knew it was going to happen and have been praying like crazy. You know . . . God will provide, what AM I going to do?

Kinda I have faith, or maybe not enough?

So Thursday evening I was offered a contract job. I have no idea for how long or if I will eventually become an employee but it’s for almost the same money.

I thanked God so much He probably got tired of hearing from me. 😃

And I will thank Him too. His graces are endless.

I actually recorded all the Holy Land rosaries so I can say them any time. I’m actually not that crazy about the Luminous episode. It strikes me as too well choreographed. But that’s just me.
