Wow! That could have ended so badly! Never go to any guy’s apartment by yourself! At the very least, it could start rumors! At the very worst, well, they could be pulling your body out of a ditch! Good luck on your studying and try and stay away from trouble next time!

Hey Guys,

I just need another opinion. But we were unofficially boyfriend/girlfriend during that time but were still broken up. After this whole incidence, I didn’t have the heart to talk to my ex boyfriend. So I didn’t text or call for about 3 days. He thought something was obviously up. So he called but I behaved strangely because I didn’t know what to do with my feelings. But now we are officially broken up as of 3 days ago. Did I owe him an explanation of what happened or not? (because I do feel slightly guilty and kept going around me drinking/flirting with this other guy) Should I have really said something even though, nothing bad happened?
No, you do not owe your ex any type of explanation about what happened. Don’t burden him with it. If you are feeling guilty, take it to confession but there is no reason for you to tell your ex.

Lenni, I would advise you to help out your ex-boyfriend by truly breaking contact for good this time. Chances are he is still emotionally very attached to you. Break off contact and let him go. Let him get over you, let him get on with his life. You can really help him by eliminating contact with him. Stop calling him and stop messaging him. If he asks why, just tell him as it is - it’s over and you want to help him forget you. And ask him not to call you anymore, for the same reason.

Lenni, don’t beat yourself up over what wasn’t really flirting and certainly wasn’t cheating on whom wasn’t really your boyfriend.

I don’t suggesting lying. In fact, I don’t reply, “all is well,” to the standard, polite, “how are you?” if that would produce direct falsehood. On the other hand, you can deflect the question, say that you’re coping or that you have some problems but nothing major or nothing that would hold you down.

And yeah, it must be an awkward situation having an ex-boyfriend for a friend, especially with stuff like emotionally caring, needing daily contact etc. However, while you can have a full friendship, you can’t have a half-relationship. Perhaps some grace period may be in order, so that, for a while, you still give him more time than you would give to a friend, and tolerate his expressions of protectiveness, care, even attachment, when they don’t get out of line, but at some point you need to start treating it like a normal friendship. Better sooner than later. Unless you want to come back to the relationship, but this shouldn’t be done half-heartedly (should be a weighted and weighty decision).
