Ex-Catholic Fundamentalists

Instead of re-inventing the wheel, why don’t you have the decency and respect to actually read the Catholic position on the use of images in worship that is published right here on Catholic Answers. All you have to do is search “idolatry”. This is the beginning of the article.

Once you have actually read the article, then you explain how it is that you know that other people are putting pictures, icons, and saints BEFORE God, because that is really what idolatry is. It is the heart making something greater than God.

And once you’ve told me how you’ve come about that knowledge of others’ hearts and minds, then post again on this thread.

**Do Catholics Worship Statues?

“Catholics worship statues!” People still make this ridiculous claim. Because Catholics have statues in their churches, goes the accusation, they are violating God’s commandment: “You shall not make for yourself a graven image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow down to them or serve them” (Ex. 20:4–5); “Alas, this people have sinned a great sin; they have made for themselves gods of gold” (Ex. 32:31).

It is right to warn people against the sin of idolatry when they are committing it. But calling Catholics idolaters because they have images of Christ and the saints is based on misunderstanding or ignorance of what the Bible says about the purpose and uses (both good and bad) of statues.

Anti-Catholic writer Loraine Boettner, in his book Roman Catholicism, makes the blanket statement, “God has forbidden the use of images in worship” (281). Yet if people were to “search the scriptures” (cf. John 5:39), they would find the opposite is true. God forbade the worship of statues, but he did not forbid the religious use of statues. Instead, he actually commanded their use in religious contexts!

God Said To Make Them

People who oppose religious statuary forget about the many passages where the Lord commands the making of statues. For example: “And you shall make two cherubim of gold *; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end; of one piece of the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends. The cherubim shall spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubim be” (Ex. 25:18–20).

No… I am not motivated by fear. I am not prejudiced. I am here because I stumbled on this site by sheer accident… (I don’t even remember how I got here actually) It pricked my interest and has caused me to dig deeper in the study of God’s Word. This is a good thing… I may not remember what originally let me to this site, but… This is why I have stayed.

Oh… and I did see a picture of Pope John Paul II bowing his head to an image of Mary.
To the image, or in front of the image? I think your interpretation of the scene reflects your prejudice.

“No… I am not motivated by fear. I am not prejudiced.”

Then why do you refuse to believe the truth of what Catholics believe, when you’ve been told by Catholics on this board, and when you’ve been shown the official teaching as printed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church?

You’ve been told and you’ve been shown, and yet you insist that we don’t know what we’re doing. How insulting to us, to be told that we don’t know our own religion. But more than that, how arrogant!

forgive me I didn’t mean to be offensive. 😊

Psalms 119:160 Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

2 Timothy 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

In the New Testament, God’s Word (The Written Word) it is the written word of God and that only that Jesus Christ and His apostles refer as the final authority.

In the temptation in the wilderness, the Lord resisted Satan three times, saying, “It is written”

In Matthew 4:4, “he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” In stating “It is written,” the Lord used the exact same phrase that is used in the Holy Bible a total of forty six times.

The consistency of the use of this repeated phrase points to and underlines its importance.

Finally, It is shown the Lord totally accepted the authority of the Old Testament by His words in Matthew 5:17-18:

“Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy but to fulfill. For verily, I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled.”

Matthew 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

Mark 7:13 “You are making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such things do ye.”

Tradition has it’s place… The Bible does speak favorably of tradition at times, but Scripture alone is inspired, it alone is the ultimate authority, and it alone is the final judge of Tradition.

Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Not sure what you mean? Jesus is the Word so of course he agrees with it and comes under it. It was inspired by him. He is a man of his WORD… He is just… His laws are pure and righteous. He stands by his Word…
None of the verses you quoted says that the Bible is the only authority. Further, they don’t condemn Tradition.

Can you find a verse that supports your Bible only view?

Note; not one of these verses support your claim that the Bible is the only, or even final, authority for a Christian. Not one.
Psalms 119:160
You are quoting an OT verse to support your belief in Sola Scriptura… If SS is proven in the OT, then there is no need for the NT. This verse must be saying something else than what you are trying to force, poorly by the way, to say.
2 Timothy 3:15
Which Scriptures had Timothy known since he was a Child? Certainly not the Bible with the complete NT that we know today. Again you are trying to force an interpretation on this verse which simply is not there. If we are to take your interpretation, this verse is actually saying too much. Since it was the OT Scriptures which Timothy had known as a child, your interpretation is actually saying that only the OT, “…are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
In the New Testament, God’s Word (The Written Word) it is the written word of God and that only that Jesus Christ and His apostles refer as the final authority.
Where do they say any such thing?

Your serve.

God bless
