Hello My Beloved Blessed Catholic Family , I’m here to day its been awhile since I’ve been on here .

Anyway I’m on Facebook & I’m Friends w/2 Ex-Catholics Who claims The Churches Teachings aren’t real & one claims Purgatory is just Made up it doesn’t exist , So I told them even before I got into Catholicism I have always heard there’s A Waiting room for those who’ll enter Heaven Or Hell & Catholics Purgatory sounds Just like what I’ve heard .

I’m like Its Funny that when you talk to A Ex-Catholic They seem to have left the Church due to not reading Books & the Bible & the CCC about the Religion or weren’t Interested in Learning more So they’ve left .

these 2 Ex-Catholics are those types of people who seems to be involved In these So-called religions that you see On TV like Joel Osteen & Joyce Meyer type of Stuff & I’ve Asked How can One Know Of Jesus & God on their own without A Real Religion .

& to Me People like Joyce Meyer to me are making up Religion type of Groups that Many are going toward instead of A real Religion & I think Its Dangerous in Many cases to me Its like learning False teachings by someone Yet there’s No real religion foundation to actually know & learn who god is & was that’s to me is Not real & dangerous .

Your friends are simply putting their faith in the teachings of men such as Martin Luther, who in the 16th century decided to discard the Church’s teaching of Purgatory. But just as the word Trinity is not found in the Bible, there is ample evidence in Scripture for both the Trinity and Purgatory. Jesus did not hand out Bibles; He established a Church to teach with authority until the end of the world. God gave us the Bible through the Catholic Church. So if they trust the Bible they have to trust the Catholic Church who assembled the Canon of Scripture in the first place.

But again, many have put their faith in Martin Luther, who on his own authority removed 7 books from the Old Testament canon. That’s why Protestant Bibles only have 66 books, instead of f 73.

But evidence for Purgatory is all over Scripture, even without the Books which Luther removed. For example, in the Gospels, Jesus said:

"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny."–Matt. 5:25
*
"Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.** “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.***” --Matt. 18:32-35

St Paul said:
*
"But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though ONLY as one ESCAPING THROUGH THE FLAMES. 1 Cor. 3:11-15*

I just wanted to chime in and say that we are not the only religion that believes in a purifying place like purgatory.

I’ve had a discussion with a person of the Jewish faith, who believes in a place that sounds similar to purgatory, (I think it is called Gehenna). I’ve been told that souls go there after death to be purified for a year before that soul enters heaven.

For any Jewish person reading this, if I have erroneously misrepresented your beliefs, please correct me if I am wrong.

one claims Purgatory is just Made up
I’d ask them to give reason for that claim. You should be able to support the belief. Can they substantiate their own claim? If they just fling mud and offer nothing, then such folks may not be open to reason and you may have to shake dust from your sandals and focus somewhere else. :o

As a separate issue you might want tell them they are still Catholic. Once a Catholic always a Catholic. No matter what they say, think, feel, do, even turning their back on the Church they remain Catholic. There are only two types of Catholic. Those in a state of grace and those in a state of mortal sin. There is no such thing as a former or ex-Catholic.

What if his friends are Copts? Eastern Orthodox? Nestorians in the Persian Church?

Eastern Orthodox churches differ in beliefs from the Roman Catholic Church. They have no formal doctrine about purgatory but there are several schools of thought among the Eastern Orthodox on the topic of purification after death. But Orthodox believers do pray and make offerings for the dead.

When one separates from the Rock of Peter the Magisterium of the Church (the Teaching Office of the Church composed of the pope in union with the bishops) then one becomes a self-appointed freelance Bible interpreter and will be swayed by the opinions of men.
