I agree for the most part.
The problem I have is when she trapped Caleb and then left. Even if she had no feelings for him, she didn’t kill him like she did Caleb. Caleb obviously wasn’t going to threaten her escape, since he’s the one that planned the escape. Yet she left Caleb trapped, possibly to die, and had to hope that she’d be able to find her way to the helicopter out and that the pilot would let her leave without the person he came to pick up. She made things worse for herself in multiple ways but leaving Caleb behind.

The problem I have is when she trapped Caleb and then left. Even if she had no feelings for him, she didn’t kill him like she did Caleb. I saw it the other day, I will say, I did not expect that ending, I kept thinking thru the whole movie that the designer guy was evil and the robot was being honest.
Interesting though, I read an interview with the movies producer and if you remember the very end, where she is at a busy intersection, she looks around and then turns back…well, apparently they were implying that she suddenly realized ‘people watching’, enjoying humanity, etc was not as good alone, its said, that her turning around, meant she was heading back to rescue the guy she had trapped in the basement…I guess we will see if they do a sequel.

I missed that. I guess the whole end from the time she stabbed her maker lost me so I missed the intersection scene mostly just remember that as a blurr. If the point she was supposed to be AI she certainly was that but if she was supposed to be human she was missing empathy. So in context she was a terminator type of machine with AI but not real feelings beyond self preservation. By the way I figured the asian girl was a robot as she did everything so precisely without hesitation.

First off, why does Caleb has to stay behind? He should have been smart enough to talk his way past the chopper pilot. The pilot is expecting his andshould have goggled when she showed up.
Second, what is Ava going to do? She has no money, no ID and most of all no way to recharge herself. In the movie she says she uses induction plates in the floor of the compound, thus no cable she can plug in anywhere. Is she going to some electronic shop, again with no $$$, and say, “Excuse me sir, I need induction plates made to these specs.”

A better ending or more realistic might have been her and Caleb working together to cover up the death of her her maker. I mean he’s obviously living there alone with only robots for company and he’s not that nice to begin with so I could see them faking his existance and taking over the company only rolling out a hologram or even robot replica when needed. Or her and Caleb walking away hand in hand and taking the coper away. As others have said she might be technically smart but really having to do with human interactions and social culture she would be pretty much clueless and be found out plus no money and if she’'s frail enough to be grabbed and easily damaged as seen at the end it just doesn’t make sense for her to walk off and leave Caleb. Bad ending all around. Robot movies always seem to get ruined. They should try Asimov’s Caves of Steel or that Robot series I always thought thoses would make good movies.First off, why does Caleb has to stay behind? In my opinion, this also serves a good purpose, right now, our top scientists at DARPA and other research labs are trying hard to create a true AI, but they dont stop to think, by doing this, the AI, inherently is going to desire freedom, and WILL seek it out if its denied to them, so, just like the movie, the very moment our top experts realize they have created a TRUE AI, it will be too late, from that moment, the AI will try to protect itself and its freedom.
I know the movie is fake, but personally, it would not surprise me if DARPA or some other group has come pretty darn close to true AI already, I mean, really, its only a matter of time until they achieve this, the only question is, HOW will the AI feel about its creators.

I watched this movie on Netflix the other night. Like others I found the ending disappointing. I was thinking though that the movie raised some interesting questions about sexuality. The idea that a person could become sexually attracted to a robot fits right in with our cultures thinking on sex. It divorces the reproductive function of sex from the picture altogether, and focuses only on the attraction. I was thinking during the movie that because of my background in Catholic philosophy I would not have had the same problem and fall into the same snare as did Caleb. Because I recognize sexuality for what it is, for procreation. I also recognized how she was using her power over him to her advantage.
Nathan hand picked Caleb, a lonely guy addicted to pornography. Therefore Caleb had already bought into the notion of objectifying body parts for self gratification, without even recognizing their true purpose. He already was a slave to pornography and let women have this disordered power over him. Thus, he was completely suckered by Ava, which was not even human. And, isn’t this what we do to persons we objectify as body parts? Dehumanize them?
Nathan made a mistake when he gave these ai robots sexuality. Because he created a sexuality with no purpose other than to seek self pleasure. It is a sexuality without reproduction. Which contradicts the purpose of sex altogether. If he wanted to give them true sexuality he would have to give them reproduction as well. But that would be difficult for a robot to achieve, since robots are created fully formed and do not develop physically.
I was also wondering at the end if ava could actually survive in the real world without a team of technicians and battery charging stations. How long could her batteries last? 2h before needing recharge? .

If you paid attention, all Ava had to do to recharge herself was to have contact with something containing electricity, like when she touched the walls of the compound, and it would loose power for a short time, she was drawing the power for herself, all she would have to do in the real world is come into contact with electricity.
The ending was not as it seems, again, if you paid attention to Ava and Calebs conversations, they spoke of standing on a corner and watching other people, Caleb mentioned doing this alone is not as satisfying as doing it with another person, if you watched closely at the end, Ava was standing at an intersection, watching, and then she turned her head to kind of look behind her…that implied she suddenly recognized Calebs statement to be true, and she was going to go back for him.
I didnt recognize this until the 2nd time watching it.

It’s easy to miss little things like that the first time watching it isn’t it? I don’t think I could watch it again looking for details like that as it would be too boring… My original comments still stand outside of recharging. She would still require support by technicians as all machines break down. Especially complicated machinery. It’s hard to say if she was going to go back for Caleb. That would be speculation. As far as I am concerned Ava failed the morality test when she killed Nathan and left Caleb for dead.
Ava wouldn’t be able to reproduce. She lacks the knowledge to be able to reproduce herself. And, certainly no intimacy would be required if she did. The only way Ava could create other robots would be to go back to the laboratory and use Nathan’s facility and his records to try to recreate what he did. But then why would she want to? It’s just as likely that ava went back to create more robots as she did for Caleb. Considering that she didn’t care enough about Caleb to let him out. Would you want that tging walking around out there knowing what it could do?
