Since mortal sins are required to be confessed, is this a good examination of conscience for someone returning to the Church after many years?

1st Examen (Many probably know this one :))

How about this one?
2nd Examination of conscience (more thorough)

NOTE: I mean using only one of these examinations of conscience, not using both for 1, thorougher, examen. Thank you
Google the catechism online,

Go to the chapters for each of the Commandments,
Read each one by one, and note whatever it notes as “grave” matter is a mortal sin (if deliberate. Freely committed and committed with full knowledge. Also mortal sins can be committed in thoughts only if deliberate, freely thought and with full knowledge).

Then write down any grave matter committed in thoughts or actions for each commandment,
(probably this will take a week to two weeks if 10 to 15 mins spent writing each day).
Also sins can be of omission, not doing something, eg: not helping parents in a crucial matter that caused them great suffering,

Both of those seem fine. I’d recommend the second one since it’s more thorough and it defines some of the sins with reference to the Catechism. I hope your Confession goes well. 🙂

Whichever examination you choose, I would urge you to call the priest you wish to confess to and make an appointment with him to make your confession outside of the regular confession schedule.

Thank you, Father
