What are some good examples of miracles that have undergone scientific scrutiny and amazed scientists or doctors? Like Padre Pio’s stigmata. What are some others?

Links appreciated.
:o

One of my favorite is the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano (Italy) where the Eucharist changed into Christ’s Body and Blood before the congregation. It was tested by reknowned scientists and show to be human cardiac flesh and human blood, both with type AB blood (same as discovered on the Shroud of Turin), from a male human being between ages 30-35, if I remember correctly.

Also:
Cures at Lourdes.

Are there any miracles that have undergone scrutiny of weeping statues that the Church has validated?

Also, what are some episodes involving exorcism where a doctor examined the subject and was befuddled by either physical impossibilities or the person speaking an ancient language, etc…?

That is amazing!

PARTICLE / WAVE duality.

There are two sides to reality, our side and the other side. Depending on which side governs an event is what determines the format of the final outcome. Our side is confined to real time. The other side is outside of our reality and extends across all time.

In the famous two slit light experiment, if we simply allow it to occur, it is being governed from the other side, and the photons interfere with each other as though they are of a Wave like structure.

If we introduce real time events into the experiment, then it is now governed from our side and becomes a real time event experiment. For instance, if you detect the photons passing through the slits, each detection is a real time event. In this case the photons now simply interfere with each other in real time, thus interfere with each other as quanta of energy or mere particles.

Thus in these kinds of situations we can see that there are laws of physics at work on the other side as well.

Now if I were to arrange a dividing of the red sea from the other side, it would appear to be miraculous since we can not look across time, thus we can only see the result, but can not the cause, thus the event seems miraculous since since its entirety is not being exposed.

Oooh…Oooh! What a great topic!

Here’s my favorite –

(It’s been a while since I read this, so please forgive me if the exact details are not correct.) In the Diary of St. Faustina she talks of Jesus instructing her to have a painting of Him drawn to His specifications. St Faustina had artists create renderings, but each one drew Jesus in a way that made Him look very handsome. After persistence, St. Faustina was finally able to get an artist to draw Jesus in the way Jesus had Himself instructed St. Faustina. That rendition is the one most notably seen in the Divine Mercy paintings (though I HAVE seen some done with a more ruggedly-handsome Jesus).

While in Italy in 2000, I was so blessed to see the Shroud of Turin just before World Youth Day in Rome. There were Holy Cards which were done in a tri-fold wherein you could lay one image of Jesus on top of another. It was incredible - the image of the Face on the Shroud was exactly the same image as you see in the Divine Mercy Image. Cheekbones. Eye sockets. Chin. Everything lays together perfectly.

While this isn’t a “miracle” in the normal way we think, I always get such a sense of awe and comfort when I see this Holy Card. The Shroud has never been de-bunked as the actual burial cloth of Jesus. St Faustina would have had no way of seeing this burial cloth. Yet, the image she insisted be done according to the specific instructions of Jesus ends up being an exact duplicate of the face on the Shroud.

What an AMAZING GOD we serve!

Yea…gives me goosebumps. And it’s just such a wonderful confirmation that God ties everything together beautifully, if we just learn to Trust in Him!

Our Lady of Akita, Japan: a beautiful wooden statue of Mary, see links below, wept more than 100 times in the 1970s, at the convent of Akita. Bishop Ito, to whose jurisdiction Akita belongs, witnessed the events. Sister Agnes Sasagawa, at the convent, witnessed some other miraculous events during this period, e.g. light emanating from the Eucharist, she had the stigma in one of her hands, she underwent some serious illnesses that were suddenly cured later, and she received some messages from Our Lady. The apparitions of Our Lady of Akita were approved by the Prefect of the Congregation on the Doctrine of Faith, Cardinal Ratzinger (before he became Pope Benedict 16).

MarcoPolo, do you know the story of Our Lady’s apparitions at Fatima, Portugal, 1917? She appeared to 3 children, gave some prophecies that were later fulfilled (Russia becoming a godless power; second world war coming), and her apparition on October 13, 1917 was accompanied by the “miracle of the Sun”, which was witnessed by 70,000 (seventy thousand) people. But her earlier apparitions, e.g. September 13, 1917, were also accompanied by miracles such as tiny white flower petals falling from the sky, witnessed by hundreds of people. Of all the Marian apparitions I know, Fatima is the most dramatic, given the major miracle of the Sun, the many witnesses, and the prophecies given that were fulfilled during the 20th century. There’s plenty of information on the internet, plus there are the books written by Fr. Robert J. Fox, available from the Fatima Family Apostolate (just google Fr. Fox and Fatima Family Apostolate).

And surely you know about the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in 1531, and her miraculous image that appeared on the tilma (garment woven of cactus fibers) of the poor Aztec Indian Juan Diego? That tilma should have fallen apart after 20-30 years. The very fact that the tilma is still intact, almost 500 years later, with the beautiful image of our Lady, is another miracle. The tilma is at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Mexico City. In the early 20th century (1911 or 1912?), during the atheist revolution of Mexico, somebody planted a bomb among the flowers under the tilma. The tilma was behind a thin glass cover, meant to protect it from touching it and from the smoke of candles. When the bomb went off, the thin sheet of glass remained miraculously intact and the tilma was not harmed, although there was major destruction around and a strong metallic rail was deformed by the power of the blast. Again, there’s plenty of information on the internet and many good books at Catholic bookstores, on the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe and her beautiful, miraculous image.

Thanks for the continued links. In dealing with skeptics, it will help me to provide them the name of the scientists/doctors who performed the examinations, or at least the nature of the exams I’ll be sure to delve into some of these links!

How to perform miracles was not enough eh?

OK how about this then. I often used motorcycle batteries as the power source for some of my electronic projects back when I was in my younger days.

One of these batteries seemed to have a defective lead plate casting, but the battery still worked though. What could be seen, due to the battery casing being composed of clear plastic, was a crack in the lead strip that links one plate to the next plate and so on.

Anyhow, one day I had my batteries up in the apartment where I was recharging them. Eight hours later I checked to see how the batteries were doing, and they seemed to be fully charged because they were consistently bubbling gas, which is what does naturally occur when fully charged.

I picked up that defective battery, and that simple action turned out to be enough to break the crack in the lead completely, and once that occurred a spark jumped across the gap and also ignited the gas.

This created an explosion that was load enough to leave my ears ringing for 24 hours, and was also suffice enough to vaporize most of the battery. The rest of the battery casing was stuck in the four walls surrounding me. I noticed a bit of blood on my hands, and so I headed over to the bathroom I gave myself a look-over after washing the blood off my hands.

There was not a cut to be found, and so where exactly the blood came from is still a mystery. How the explosion did not hurt me in the slightest, other than the ringing ears, is also still a mystery.

A miracle perhaps ?

Excellent!

So far I have these:

the incorruptibility of St. Bernadette.

The stigmata of Padre Pio.

The Eucharistic miracle at Lanciano, Italy.

What else?
Regarding the scientific investigation of the items at Lanciano, many websites and books claim that the (catholic) doctors (Linoli & Bertelli) that investigated the contents of the blood and flesh had their work “reaffirmed by a scientific commission appointed by the Higher Council of the World Health Organization in 1973.” All references for this quote eventually lead back to this webpage, where the quote is unreferenced.

zenit.org/article-12933?l=english

Zenit.org is a Catholic organization.

However, according to the WHO, there is not, and never has been such thing as “the Higher Council of the World Health Organization”. So, Zenit.org is lying in order to give credibility to the Lanciano story, which has none.

Given this easily accessible information, you should probably avoid the lanciano example when trying to extablish the veracity of miracles to non-catholics.

Another fascinating thing about that miracle is the 5 globules of blood. When weighed they always come up to the same weight no matter the combination. One globule weighs as much as all 5 together, and 2 globules weighs as much as 1, 3, 4, or 5 globules, it’s always the same weight.

Don’t forget Gemma the girl born without pupils that was prayed for by Padre Pio and gained 20/20 vision without pupils.

how do you know this?

I will get back to you on the above claim.

I was wondering if you knew what the skeptic’s response is to the tests conducted prior to the 1973 tests mentioned in Zenit? Includes microscopic images and details of the earlier study. Link here.
