English professor Anthony Esolen has written an article which examines the restoration of the prayers in the English language Roman Missal. He compares the richness contained in the Latin prayers with the English version that we have been using for decades. By way of comparison, the current prayers seem less focused and, to me, horizontally oriented. Moving on to the ‘restored’ prayers, which we will begin praying this weekend, it is immediately clear that the prayers follow the Latin much more closely. They emphasize God’s greatness and our sinfulness. I was surprised at the shallowness of the only liturgical prayers that I have been exposed to. All of that is about to change. It takes a few minutes to read, but it is well worth reading. Here is a link to the article: firstthings.com/article/2011/11/restoring-the-words
