Trembling Before God:
filmsthatchangetheworld.com/site/vlog

In a 2002 Washington Post article titled “Rabbis in the Middle On Homosexual Issues Debate Ordination of Gays,” Alan Cooperman wrote:

Three hundred and fifty rabbis from the Conservative branch of Judaism are in Washington for a convention this week, and a bunch of them have slipped off to the movie. Not the movies. The movie: Trembling Before G-d, a documentary about gay male and lesbian Orthodox Jews that has caused a furor in the Orthodox community in the United States but ultimately may have more impact on the much larger Conservative movement. The rabbinical praise for Trembling Before G-d is also noteworthy. “Poignant,” says Rabbi Ismar Schorsch, chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. “Very touching,” says Rabbi Kassel Abelson, chairman of the Conservative movement’s Committee on Jewish Law and Standards. “Very powerful,” says Rabbi Elliot N. Dorff, rector of the University of Judaism in Bel Air, Calif. They should know, because all three are major players in the long-running debate within the Conservative movement over whether to ordain gay men and lesbians as rabbis and perform commitment ceremonies for gay couples.
Last winter, after years of intense discussion and debate, the Conservative Movement made a bold and historic policy change: legalizing the ordination of gay and lesbian rabbis and the ability to perform same-sex unions.

Movie: The Bible Tells Me So

FILM SYNOPSIS
Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate?

Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families – including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson – we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard’s Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.

“For the Bible Tells Me So.”, The Movie About Gay Children and Their Parents
NEW YORK (AP) – TV and film producer Daniel Karslake enjoyed working on segments about religion and gay relationships for the PBS gay news magazine “In the Life.”

Yet as he watched the wrenching debates over Scripture and homosexuality in Protestant denominations and society at large, he felt a need to reach beyond an audience that already accepted partnered gays and lesbians. The result opened nationally Friday in New York, a documentary called “For the Bible Tells Me So.”

Why must we see them? Is the point to make us “more tolerant” of homosexuals? If so, it is propaganda in my opinion.

Peace

Tim

This is not the proper place for this thread, in my opinion, but I will play along. This may not be the proper place for this post, but I am here, I can do no other.

If the only non-sinful sexual contact in the Bible is between a man and his wife, who cares what other religions say? Homosexuals are people created in the immage and likeness of God and so we should love them as we love everyone, but that does not mean the acts are not sinful. A single man is not allowed intercourse with a single woman. Same between two men (or women). It is simple.

You may not accept it. You may not like it, but that is the Bible. Please take any arguments to the contrary up with God. He wrote it.

Yeah…I kinda wondered myself. Is homosexuality now considered a non-Catholic religion? I tolerate the people…they are my brothers and sisters…but I don’t tolerate the “act”.

Sorry I’m a bit busy with regards to my husband’s illness. Please have patience if I take a bit of time to respond to replies. I must go off the net for a bit. I requested prayers for my husband in the Prayers Intentions.I’d really appreciate anyone who feels inclined to send positive thoughts for his well being. Thanks so much!

The thread may be removed or switched by Admin. for any reason. I’m easy. No problems here. Please lets try to love one another. My purpose is simply to supply information or to educate us a bit deeper in this field. I wish no ill will towards anyone. I love to learn. I love new ideas, new information. Its an incredible forum! There’s a whole lotta love here despite our deep communications. Do remember that religion and politics are two of the top taboo subjects in secular society. They are “heated” so it isn’t any surprise that tempers flare up. Its all OK. Its all good ! We are learning from each other and listening.

God be with us all and give us wisdom…

love is NEVER an abomination for “God IS love.”

the problem is the suggestion that sex is love. sex can be an expression of love, but there are many more (and in some ways deeper) ways of expressing love. the bible does condemn the sexual act between people of the same gender. i think it supports the love of each other (yes, even between people of the same gender). to have the love for each other like jonathan and david had is something to strive towards. the bible gives us no reason to hate except that which would draw us away from God.

I adore St. Augustine. I have his books. What a thinker !
😃
I absolutely adore him, too. His writings move me beyond words.

He is my patron saint.
👍

His mother, St. Monica is my patron saint. I also chose Monica as my confirmation name. Father and I “tussled”(and I mean that in a joking manner) over the fact that I couldn’t have Augustine as my patron saint/confirmation. He explained that I am female, Augustine was male and if we changed the spelling to the female version, the true meaning could be lost. I am very close to both him and his mother.

iloveu2 - I don’t understand you. You said in another thread, God loves homosexuals, that you are not gay, but yet you seem to be pushing the gay agenda. Why is this?

Yes, God does love all people, and the emphasis is on “ALL.” God does not, however approve, condone, or otherwise accept any sex with anyone other than a person’s husband or wife…period. It is what it is, nothing more, nothing less.

You cannot take the things you like from the bible and say you are a christian, then discard and ignore the things you do not like, and still calll yourself a christian. The bible is the Word. It cannot be added to or anything taken away from it, for it is the Word of God.

I sense an alterior motive and an agenda that is against the traditional family way of life. You coat it in christianity and try to make your agenda look so harmless and loving. This is something I would expect from the ACLU. Their agenda is to destroy the traditional american family through litigation, forcing everyone to accept things that do nothing but bring man down to the level of a soulless animal.

All of us are sinners. All of us have the mercy of God available to us through redemption and penance. Sin is sin, and no matter what you say about it, it does not change that fact that homosexuality is sinful. God does love the sinner, all sinners, but hates sin. Sin restricts the soul from receiving God’s graces through the Holy Spirit. God calls homosexuals to celibacy.

My last thought is this: He who helps another to sin, takes part in that sin. By your advocating all things gay, you take part in the sins of others committed from reading your posts and believing in what you preach.

I will pray for you for clarity, so that you may know the Truth, and the whole Truth, not just bits and pieces of it that fit in with your situation.

the problem is that the bible was added to and had books taken away from it. for a jewish person (which is where the idea of homosexuality being wrong comes from for Christian) the “bible” (which would be the Christian OT) is the Tanakh or the books of the law, the prophets, and the writings. there are some books that some think should be included in that and others don’t. there are also “commentaries” that go along with those (ever hear about adam’s first wife, lilith?). getting into the NT, there were a number of books that many believed should have been included in the bible. there are books that were included that many felt should have been excluded.

don’t get me wrong, i believe the bible is the word of God, but the bible was added to and things have been taken away from it. also, those who gave us the precepts which led to the exclusion of homosexual acts have (within their communities) those who would say that homosexuals can be accepted and even their relationships (yes, even sexual) can be condoned. no one says to them, “you can’t be jewish and believe that!”. because you can be jewish and believe that. just as you can be Christian and believe that as well.

i personally don’t believe that, but i stated that in an earlier post.

bengal - sorry to say that quote from you sounds like a politician saying, “Personally, I don’t believe in abortion, but I voted for it due to the outside pressures.” (Just an example) If you don’t believe something, why would you argue in favor of it?

You either accept that the bible is the Word of God or you don’t. You either accept that the Holy Spirit influenced the writers of the many books, and also influenced what books would be consolidated into what we now know as the bible or you don’t. It all comes down to faith. Faith in God and His Word.

Stand strong in your faith and do not let anyone dictate to you what you should accept as the norm. Live and walk by faith. Follow His teachings, if you believe in Him who sent His only Son for our salvation.

If you believe the bible is the Word of God, you know that this is a war, a war for souls. It is being waged by principalities and powers, and we are the prise. Each one of us will either be a winner or a loser. Heaven or hell. We each choose our path, and either suffer the consequences of our choices or rejoice in the glory of our Master’s House. Be a slave to sin or try to overcome sin through obedience to the Word.

May God bless everyone on this thread, and may He shine His light down upon us all and give us all a thirst for the Truth. “Seek and ye shall find.”

Let’s not kid ourselves. Sex may not be love, but it is the most intimate way of expressing love and why should someone be denied that mode of expression because they have fallen in love with someone who is of the same sex?

This, btw, is one of the major reasons that the Conservative Judaism has issued the new t’shuva (law) permitting homsexual unions (while leaving it up to the individual communities as to whether to adopt this position). Anal sex between men, btw, is still prohibited, even under the most liberal reading of the t’shuva.

FInally, I saw Trembling before God and didn’t think it was so great.

I want to see “The Bible Tells Me So.”…I too saw “Trembling Before God”…I wasn’t too impressed…message was interesting but as an American Christian, it was a little beyond my experience.

Dear iloveu2,

I’m curious as to why the numerous posts and threads on homosexuality. I understand your explanation in the past about tolerance and loving homosexuals. But, the more you speak of it the more tired people get of it.

It’s kind of like having the same leftover every day for a week when you didn’t like the original meal in the first place. I recommend laying off a little.

Most people here are loving and kind. They don’t hate people. Most simply won’t agree with your points. And they are not going to change their minds considering the Church’s stance on the issue.

I am, for lack of a better term, “non-Catholic”. I have gay friends. I treat them no different than anyone else. I don’t elevate their lifestyle or devalue it. They are who they are. They do what they do. No amount of action on my part is going to change that.

I encourage you to take that same approach not only with gay friends you have, but with everyone else you meet. Accept the good, bad and the ugly. You can’t force people to change their views.

Many of us are listening, but it’s the same broken record. Your posts are not educating us. Most of us know the issues of homosexuality already and know what our stances are.

And, I encourage you to post your own thoughts instead of posts from other forums or news sources. I make these suggestions in kindness and love.

Peace…

MW

Well said. I sensed an agenda being put forth by the OP also.

Just to clarify, to say that love is never an abomination because God is Love is an example of equivocation, but it’s not really our fault. Love is a vague (and terrible) English word which means many things ambiguously.

Ancient Greek has four words for ‘love’, but only one is used for the statement that “God is Love”. The Love of God is, in Greek, αγαπη, which means altruistic or self-sacrificing love.

There are other types of love, such as ‘eros’ or romantic love, and philia, or friendship. Eros love can be a trainwreck, as I’m sure many of us know. Even philia isn’t the kind of love that God is. When we speak of God being Love, we must make sure we are aware that ‘love’ is meant as altruistic giving, not as bubbly emotion or romantic sentiment.

Therefore certain acts of ‘love’ (i.e. eros love) can be sinful in the sight of God. We have to be careful with our terms.

Gosh ! Thanks for the many replies.
Sorry I’m late in replying.
I didn’t know this thread was moved. I thought it was deleted.
I’m busy and a bit behind. I haven’t taken time to study how the forum works and its so gigantic. Have patience with me. I’ll get there. I didn’t realize messages and replies are sent to my yahoo address I gave here. O Man…I have 135! I have to unsubscribe; no time to read so much. The forum’s fantastic but a wee bit complicated when you’re new and I’m not concentrating 100% re my husband being in hospital since Monday and for 9-10 days yet.

Do I have a private agenda? You’re funny! I belong to no organizations of any kind. Actually I’ve spent the last 11 years raising my grandson. I’ve been busy talking to parents and running back and forth to school and child centered events.

So, how did I get so involved or interested in gay issues? Thats a good question. It was just one of those things that came from being overly curious about what the net has to offer.

This is my first computer and I taught myself. Its all been very exciting to participate on the information highway. Strangely enough, I have bad eyes, so bad I can’t get new eye glasses since 1977. I got a computer 3 years ago and I was so afraid I wouldn’t be able to see the print. Miracle of miracles, thanks to God and Jesus, I’m able to read perfectly on the net for hours with the naked eye. I have big print. I can’t read books for any length of time. So…O.K. I get carried away on the net.

Gay people do have problems being accepted and I wanted to address this. We can see for example the never ending responses to threads that mention the word gay. Some of you believe its a sin but if so there are many other sins that would never get this much attention. If I wrote about theft would it receive the same attention and replies or if I wrote about cheating at the grocery store, bank robbery theft, credit card fraud, or swearing , greed , envy, jealousy, pride, anger, etc. sins ad nauseum in general, these sins would never receive the major interest that being gay does. Wow! Emotions run high when gay comes up on a forum. Jesus said sins of the flesh are no worse than other sins and yet…and yet…a great number of people seem to single out gays as being more sinful than other people.

God forgive me if I’m wrong and God does know me. I asked my heart if being gay is a sin. My heart said no. Lots of comparisons are being made to being gay and they aren’t legitimate. They are very different scenarios if you really think it through such as adultery. No comparison. Pedophilia. No comparison. Sex with animals. No comparison. I accept your opinions but fair is fair. Lets try to be fair in comparisons. That’s not asking too much.

Sorry I have to run again to the hospital. I’m on the net as an escape from worry at the moment. I hope to get back. I forget.

Its a wonderful board with so many wonderful people. I really like it.

Love, Light, Peace, and Joy to All.
