Excerpts of Senator Edward Kennedy's Letter to the Pope

Shortly before he died, Senator Kennedy wrote a letter to Pope Benedict XI asking for the Pontiff’s prayers. Here is an article with excerpts from the letter.

This letter reads more like a resume for political office than a Catholic appealing to the Holy Father for his prayers. Consider this:

"“I have always tried to be a faithful Catholic Your Holiness. And though I have fallen short through human failings, I have never failed to believe and respect the fundamental teachings of my faith.”

Is it a venial or mortal sin to lie to the Pope?
