God help us all if taking it upon oneself to deliberately kill (or assist with killing) another human being should be regarded as the moral conscience of a hospital.
Calling the sister a “champion of compassionate, appropriate care for the sick and dying,” he said he was disappointed that she had been reassigned. “This leaves the impression that she did something wrong,” [Dr Garvie] argued. “What she did was something very few are asked to do; namely, to make a life-and-death decision with the full recognition that in order to save one life, another life must be sacrificed.”

Yet the child was neither sick nor dying - the child was very much alive: I fail to see how deliberately ending the child’s life could be considered “appropriate care”. No one will deny that the staff were presented with a difficult decision, but for Catholics, abortion is not an option: the decision should have valued both lives equally. In treating the mother, as is her right, everything possible should have been done to give the child the best chance of survival - granted, the death of the child may have been an unfortunate and regrettable outcome, but direct abortion should not have been an option for Sr McBride or the other staff.
