From my recollection, I believe you have to be morally-sin-free before Confirmation, Holy Orders, and Matrimony as well.

I agree one should be, but you don’t have to be. It doesn’t affect validity of course.

But receiving Communion not in the state of grace is a terrible sacrilege. I don’t think the same is true of those other sacraments.

Still it’s an academic point: we should all strive to be in the state of grace.

The discussion of excommunication is academic too. For most of us, just knowing the gravity of mortal sin and facing hell should be enough.

IMHO excommunication is more a way the Church uses to bring back those who are not simply sinners who would repent but who are really damaging the Church in an official capacity (violating the seal, simulating Mass, etc) or in the case of abortion, those who are doing something modern society accepts and even values and so the sinful nature of it might be obscured.

For regular Catholics, including myself, I say: don’t worry about excommunication, just avoid mortal sin and you’ll be on the right path.

If you’re all doing something wrong, then the Moderator should be the one to say something, not me.

The situation is simple. A hypothetical scenario based on the individual decisions of the common people on what said person would do under said scenario. Maybe it doesn’t merit much discussion for people of these forums. But don’t people take a moment to appreciate how not excommunicated they are? It almost takes the sheer form of mere gratitude!

Another way of looking at this is one I’ve often thought about with great awe. God gave me the gift of Catholic parents. The fact that I was born into (or, like some of you, found the Catholic Church on your own) is something I ponder quite often.

I could have been born to Methodist parents or Muslim parents or Lutherans. You could have,if you’re a convert, been led to the Baptist Church or one like the Church two blocks away that calls itself, “The Edge”. But, somehow, God chose us for the Catholic faith, the one, true, Church founded by Christ.

I could never give up my Catholic faith…nor would I ever want to do anything to bring shame to my Church.

I, on the other hand, have faced nothing but disappointment since the moment I got into Catholicism. I’m holding on to Catholicism, but I’m starting to look elsewhere and see where that takes me.
