I just read that Pope Sixtus V issued a papal bull “Effraenatam” (“Without Restraint”) in 1588 which excommunicated anyone who practiced any form of contraception of who aborted a baby at any point in its development. Although both were considered to be mortal sins prior to this, abortion only resulted in excommunication if the abortion took place after the quickening when theologians believed the immortal soul was infused.
I know that getting an abortion still results in excommunication but is birth control still considered grounds for excommunication? If not, when did that change?
