This is a novice question – excuse me if this isn’t the right place for it.

What sins could a Catholic commit to be excommunicated? What sins could a non-Catholic commit to be forever banned from joining the Catholic church?

Thanks in advance.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

**2272 **Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law., by the very commission of the offense,” The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.

1463 Certain particularly grave sins incur excommunication, the most severe
ecclesiastical penalty, which impedes the reception of the sacraments and the exercise
of certain ecclesiastical acts, and for which absolution consequently cannot be granted,
according to canon law except by the Pope, the bishop of the place or priests authorized
by them.68 In danger of death any priest, even if deprived of faculties for hearing
confessions, can absolve from every sin and excommunication.
EXCOMMUNICATION. An ecclesiastical censure by which one is more or less
excluded from communion with the faithful. It is also called , especially if
it is inflicted with formal solemnities on persons notoriously obstinate to reconciliation.
Some excommunicated persons are (to be avoided), others
(tolerated). No one is unless that person has been publicly excommunicated
by name by the Holy See, and it is expressly stated that the person is “to be avoided.”
Anyone who lays violent hands on the Pope is automatically .
In general, the effects of excommunication affect the person’s right to receive the
sacraments, or Christian burial, until the individual repents and is reconciled with the
Church.
In order for an excommunication to take effect, the person must have been
objectively guilty of the crime charged. –Excommunication

I’ve heard on Catholic Answers Live that, Pope John Paul II instituted that a person who has had or help in an abortion can come back into the Church through the Sacrament of Reconciliation this can be done by a Bishop or Priest.

She the Church will always have open arms to our brothers and sisters.

Sorry I can’t find the document.

As stated in the quote I included, a person who has been excommunicated may come back into the fold after being reconciled (confession/reconciliation).
That would include those who have procured an abortion.👍

This is from Wikipedia’s article on excommunication.

“There are a few offenses for which Latin Rite Roman Catholics are automatically excommunicated:

  1. *]Apostasy (canon 1364),
    *]Heresy (canon 1364),
    *]Schism (canon 1364),
*]Desecration of the Eucharist (canon 1367),
*]Physical violence against the Pope (canon 1370),
*]Attempted sacramental absolution of a partner in a sin against the sixth commandment of the Decalogue (canon 1378),
*]Ordination of a bishop without papal mandate (canon 1382),
*]Direct violation of the sacramental seal of confession by a confessor (canon 1388),
*]Procurement of a completed abortion (canon 1398), or
*]Being a conspiring or necessary accomplice in any of the above (canon 1329).”

I don’t know if there are any sins that could prevent someone from joining the RCC.

So does this mean that a couple practicising ABC are automatically excommunicated? Of course granted that the method in question is considered an aborficient, i.e "the pill, morning after pill, etc…

Just to make it clear, excommunication doesn’t MAKE a state happen; it merely declares a state which is true already. In other words, a person takes it upon himself to separate himself from the Church. At that time, the Church may declare this particular person “excommunicated.” It only makes sense that in order to return to the Church, this person confesses his sins and begins his life anew in the Church. (Note also the debates over rebaptism going on around St. Augustine’s time.)

I’ve been an utter apostate:( . I need to get back to the Church.

Practicing artificial birth control does not make you excommunicated, it makes you a sinner.
However, the morning after pill, knowing that it will cause an abortion, and freely choosing it, would be a case where you could consider yourself excommunicated.

This is a grave circumstance, and one should repent of the disregard of human life, and restore their relationship with the Church, through the sacrament of reconciliation.

I wouldn’t think so. For starters the vast majority of pills wouldn’t simply aim to prevent implantation. Rather they would aim to prevent the release of an egg to begin with.

This stuff about the combined oral contraceptive pill being an abortifacient is really dubious scientifically and in my opinion an attempt to bully people. Nice way to drive people away tho.

You know what? Catholic churches isn’t a club that tries to draw people in for the sake of selling more membership. The Church’s decisions aren’t made simply to make people feel better but to follow our Lord. If that were so, I’m pretty sure we would be already consecrating homosexual marriages. Morning after pill may cause abortion and it is therefore gravelly immoral. If someone does not know that then fine - they can’t be blamed for their ignorance. But if the person is aware of that than that makes his actions even worse. Now, I don’t know if taking morning after pills makes you excommunicated, but it certainly shouldn’t be practiced. Faith and relationship with Christ isn’t some kind of profit maximizing economic behavior. You can’t simply go and say: Well, I can do this because that doesn’t make in excommunicated; I guess I shouldn’t do that because that will damn me to hell etc. It fine if you think about hell and don’t want to end up there but that’s really not what Christianity is about. It is about wanting to become another Christ - in fact to be Christ himself. It is not about avoiding hell but about loving Jesus.

Ehm…sorry for the rant…

note my comment: combined oral contraceptive pill - not
morning after pill
driving away people with man-made burdens is an even graver sin in my opinion

Thank you all for your answers – they cleared up many misconceptions I had. I didn’t know excommunication was a state, and I didn’t know it could be reversed. And of course, I didn’t know what the offenses were.

You guys are great at helping us new people. Thanks again. 🙂 🙂 🙂
