Today, I was in church and there were open air confessions taking place. As I walked out of the sacristy, I looked up very briefly to see who was in confession. Have I automatically excommunicated myself?

No. If that person was in a confessional you would have seen them walk out of the confessional anyway. You did not break the seal of confession.

So do I. I recommend the books Helps for the Scrupulous and Understanding Scrupulosity, both from Liguori Press.

OK, then you should not be posting these kinds of questions. If you’re not already getting help for your scrupulosity, please get in touch with your priest to do so.

What? How on earth could this happen? Did you willingly and knowing violate their privacy? Draw near so as to hear the confession? No?

Open air, right? So, what’s the problem? If you are in the confession line, you know who is confessing, right?

Excommunication? Are you perhaps scrupulous? Please speak with father about this, as I think you are magnifying things that may not even exist.

Personally, I do not care if someone other than Father hears my confession. So what? God judges me, they don’t.

OP, given your posting history, you shouldn’t be asking these questions here. They will only exacerbate your compulsions. See your therapist and priest for offline help.

Others would be well advised to stop responding.
