If someone is excommunicated, how does one gain reentry? Just by going to confession? By going to the bishop? Is there a three sstikes and you permantly out kind of rule (or something like)? Thanks and God bless.

No 3 stikes and you’re out, the goal of the Church is for everyone to return to the faith. Try:newadvent.org/cathen/05678a.htm

I think it would depend on what type of sin had caused ex-communication. Some would require the Pope, some require bishops, and some require priests (authority delegated by bishops).
Also I think if you commit a sin not knowing it carried ex-communication you are not actually excommunicated.
More learned posters can give you the correct answer.

What are some sins that could cause ex-communication?

Well, I presume you haven’t tried to assassinate the pope or any truly difficult situation. 😃 Usually the priest has been given the authority to readmit you to communion. Go to confession and he will tell you if you need to do anything else. Abortion is an example of an offense that carries a penalty like excommunication.

There is no three strikes rule. No worries.

Automatic Excommunication:

Canon 1364: apostasy, heresy, or schism
Canon 1367: violation of the sacred species
Canon 1370: laying violent hands on the Pope
Canon 1378: absolution of an accomplice
Canon 1382: episcopal consecration without authorisation from the Holy See
Canon 1388: violation of the seal of Confession by a Confessor
Canon 1398: procuring an abortion

“laying violent hands”…does that include using violent arms?

Its just a way of saying doing any physical harm.

don’t you have to get some formal letter of papal decree of excommunicaton or if a bishop excommunicated you then he wojld give you some letter of excommunication. Wasn’t that how people in the old days were excommunicated?

Such an excommunication is known as as ferendae sententiae (i.e. non-automatic). This is a more severe kind of excommunication, and renders acts of governance invalid, and commands the forceful termination of liturgical functions being conducted by the excommunicated person (e.g. such an excommunicated priest saying Mass is to be removed, and the liturgy aborted if caught.) This also means that such an excommunicated bishop cannot govern a see or be validly elected Pope. (Can. 1331 sec 1, sub 1, sec 2, subs 1, 2).

This is contrasted with a latae sententiae excommunication, where the excommunication is attached automatically, without the need for declaration. If such a person is a priest, any sacraments he celebrates remain valid, but illicit, and he commits the mortal sin of sacrilege. Any person who knows he is latae sententiae excommunicated must bring this up with his confessor, who will refer him to the authority to lift the excommunication or obtain the faculties to do so.
