Exercise (anyone in the iron game out there?)

So this isn’t something that I would often be able to bring up in the more highly-trafficked subs here, but I thought I’d share a little bit about myself and see who else was out there.

I started lifting weights at 9-10. I saved up some allowance money and bought a 10 pound plastic dumbell from Meijer that came in a box with probably 25 exercises on it. I basically had no clue what I was doing but I started, and pretty soon I needed a 15 pound bell. Then a 20. Then I wondered about barbells and all that. At the time I was concerned with one thing- making my arms bigger (shocking). So I curled, and I curled, and when I was tired of curling I curled more. I occasionally might throw in some shoulder work but basically I just did variations of curls for about 2 years probably.

But I was enjoying it so much that I wanted to go deeper, so I asked for a weight bench for Christmas (still one of the most exciting gifts I’ve ever gotten). I became obsessed with training, specifically bodybuilding. I was maybe 5 ft 6 in at the time, and all of 115 pounds soaking wet. I had narrow shoulders, thin wrists and ankles- I was not built to pack on weight. But over the course of 3 or 4 years I edged closer to my ultimate goal of 175 (I wanted to weigh 175 by the time I graduated high school). I got pretty strong for such a little guy and began seriously training to compete in amateur shows. Unfortunately, I had a pretty bad knee injury that took me out of the game for a good amount of time, and I had to recover from that and slowly work my way back to previous condition. But I couldn’t train legs like I used to- no more 10 sets of 25 reps, supersetting until I puked/saw stars. My knee just wasn’t ready. And so my (already unrealistic) goal of competition was sidelined. So I trained pretty seriously until I was almost 18, at which point I adopted a much more strenuous lifestyle- lots of partying and generally poor decisions. My weight dwindled, although I continued to be pretty active (mountain biking, beach volleyball in the summers) but I pretty much hung up the gloves.

Fast forward 10 years and I’ve had a pretty sedentary 3rd shift job for 2 years and I finally just had enough of being overweight, tired and out of shape. So in January I started a diet to lose weight (which is working), now I’m working on rehabbing my body, trying to correct all the misalignments and general out-of-whackness I’m in physically. So I’m focusing on mobility and flexibility right now, with some pretty light bodyweight work. I’m hoping to be ready to move some iron by June, maybe a little earlier depending on how the work I’m doing now is going.

Honestly I miss talking shop about this stuff. My wife still says I should have been some kind of coach or trainer. Anyone else out there making a comeback after some time away? Just starting out? Pulling 700 off the floor? What’s working for you, what isn’t (routines, supps, diet etc)?

Have have seasons with the weight. I dont enjoy them. I make myself do at least 30 minutes of treadmill. Right now I am I’m a weight off-season.

I play football, and have lifted 3x a week for the last 3 years ish. due to school, I have been off schedule for a bit… I could clean 325, squat 415x3, and bench 305ish… I’m big into Olympic style lifts.

I was really into running for several years. I did a 22 mile run and a half marathon once. However, injuries put an end to that. I’ll probably start up again when the weather improves.

I was going to the gym pretty regularly before my current job. I was benching 160 but then my rotator cuff REALLY started to hurt. So, I bench lighter as to not irritate it.

Those are good numbers! What position do you play?

I never went out for football because, for one thing I was so small for so long. I don’t think I broke 150lbs until sometime close to junior year. And I didn’t want people messing with my workout routine.

That’s impressive! I was never a runner, but especially after the knee injury. My dad was though, he used to run 2k miles a year. Same thing though, his hips and knee started to bother him so much it sidelined him.

That shoulder pain is no joke. I took a bad endo a few years ago and my shoulder still isn’t totally right. I’m working with a kettlebell to help stabilise it, plus stretching. Can you do push ups without discomfort? There’s an opinion out there that a close grip push up is better for pec recruitment than a bench press (try telling that to Arnold).

Offensive and defensive line.
And thanks! God gave me a pretty good frame for it (6-3, 250 lbs) and I love lifting.

I would have killed to be your size man. But being shorter has it’s advantages too- less travel time on squats for one. I was happy just to get to 175. I loved lifting when I did it. I’m really looking forward to starting again, once I’ve gotten some mobility and stability back. I’m looking at running 5/3/1 or Greyskull LP once I’m ready.

I never trained Olympic lifts much, I have a lot of respect for people with good numbers on them. Closest I get would be kettlebell cleans and snatches.

Anyone here ever biked the KATY trail? Casual Discussion
Anyone here ever biked the KATY trail?

I’m 6ft 170lb. I wanted to be 6’4” but I came up a little short. It’s hard enough finding a 34” inseam anyways 😅

I can do pushups without pain; however, I prefer the presses. However, if I overdo any shoulder exercises it starts to hurt again. So, as soon as I feel a twinge of pain I know it’s time to rest.

I do need to start exercising at some point. I do a little. Some pushups here and some pullups there but nothing substantial. Thus, I’m still super skinny. Like this.

Always a good strategy. I’m hoping the work I’m doing now and over the next month or two helps me stay injury-free while not making the ones I do have worse. Unfortunately for as strong as I used to be I never paid much attention to calisthenics or conditioning. Just wanted to lift big and eat big. Thankfully I’m a little older and just a bit wiser now, so longevity is a concern right along with progress. That might mean I won’t see my old numbers again, but I’m ok with that.

Man that looks cool. We have some decent trails in Michigan. My goal this year (besides lifting again) did more time on the bike. I miss it.

Best to stay lean. A mix of cardio and weights. I need less cardio because I have a fast metabolism. So I try to eat a little more and lift💪

These are GREAT 👍 A few extra calories for energy but it’s got protein too. I think they’re better than CliffBars :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I second this. Taking the weight off isn’t nearly as fun as they make it sound.

Those do look good!

I joke now that the reason I can eat gross or weird stuff is because of all the shakes and bars I used to eat. I’ve heard they taste a lot better now, so I’m looking forward to that.

I wanted to be 200 lbs solid muscle this year. But I cannot afford the amount of food required :frowning_face_with_open_mouth:

If I workout too much then I’ll just lose weight 😒 So I need a cookie 🍪
