As
this guide to being an extraordinary minister says (although it uses the wrong title), for instance, “Archdiocesan guidelines * for invitation to service in this ministry clearly indicate that an invitation to serve …not create an elite in the church community.”*
Not only did it use the wrong title, it said that ‘Eucharistic Ministers’ are appointed by the priest for 3 years
It amazes me, since
somewhere people got the term ‘Eucharistic Minister’. It wasn’t just me. Not just my parish, and not just my diocese. It grew like wildfire, it seems.
And to correct people, they tend to look at me like grew a third head on my shoulders or something!
It doesn’t help with the publications are in error, esp when the other information is so useful (I haven’t looked at this, but so far, it looks really good)
What I’ve seen, though, is some seem to think that they have to do EVERYTHING. There is no ministry they won’t be a part of. Ushers, in the choir, Lectors, EMHCs, Altar Roary… and these are often people with a full time job and a family, too!
While I agree that it’s wonderful to share your time, talents and treasures with the church, some one ELSE can do some of it. I’ve also seen some people come to Mass, get there about 5 minutes before, leave as soon as the priest does, and that’s THAT! I’ve tried to get them to just bring up the Eucharistic Gifts… and they hesitate. Almost like they are spies or something
It’s human nature to have a caste system in social circles, but Mass is not social, even though as humans we are social creatures. It’s a balance.
