Exodus 2:16-3:1 Dual Name

Hello everyone,

Why is there a dual name for the priest of Midian in these verses, Exodus 2:16-3:1? Is this the same person or two different men? Thank you.

I don’t know. In the comments it says the Reul was also called Jethro, but it doesn’t say why. I know in New Testament times, people had a Greek and a Hebrew name, but I’m not sure about Moses’ time.
 
I’ve heard the theory that Moses had two wives, and thus, two father-in-laws. I’m not saying I really support such an idea, but it’s worth thinking about.

Because the written texts of the books are the result of a process of which all kinds of traditions were a part. The books of the Bible as we have it form the latest stage in this process.​

A good deal of Biblical scholarship - which is also part of this tradition, as are (say) translation, copying, & interpretation - is devoted to the study of the history of the formation of the books. And for most of the OT, this formation took place over several centuries; the recognition in Judaism of the OT books as Holy Scripture came later.
