When I had a discussion with a muslim, he told me that Christianity allows the master to treat their slave harshly. He gave me this verse

Exodus 21:20-21
“When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard
that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished.
If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be
punished, since the slave is his own property.”

I did not know what to say. Please could you help me! What am supposed to say to this person?

well it really would help if they would quote the verse correctly…😃
Exodus:
**20 He that striketh his bondman or bondwoman with a rod, and they die under his hands, shall be guilty of the crime. **
**21 But if the party remain alive a day or two, he shall not be subject to the punishment, because it is his money. **

The muslim is a nut. Remember, the slavery still being carried on in Africa & the middle east is being done by muslims, not Christians. We, as a people, have ourgrown that. They have not.

For a clearer idea of the biblical attitude toward slavery at least in the NT, refer to the book of Philemon. Written by Paul regarding Onesimus, an escaped slave and perhaps thief who Paul asked to return to his “master”. But writing to the master (a christian), Paul asks him to treat Philemon as a brother, and welcome hime even as he would welcome a visit from Paul.
