I just caught a movie called Possesed on tv last night with Timothy Dalton. It said it was based on a true story. As we watched, we were thinking it was based on the same story as was the famous “Exorcist” movie. Because, from what I have learned, the victim was really a boy not a girl and other similar facts.

I usually am not into these kinds of topics/movies, but it struck me as interesting for some reason. Have any of you guys seen this or know what I am talking about??

Peace

No way. I’ve never seen the Exorcist nor do I plan on seeing it. The idea of it just scares the heebi jeebies out of me! I admit it, I’m a wimp! :whacky:

 Yeah, trust me I know what you mean…
We said a special St. Michael prayer after that one last night :angel1: :gopray:

I understand that the idea scares you, but i must ask whether you are afraid of Satan or not. If you are afraid of the devil, he has the upper hand.

Good point. However, these movies freak me out! I know that in Christ I can defeat the evil one. But if I saw someone possesed or saw something demonic, I’m sure I would be afraid. I guess I need to pray more and ask for courage to stand up to the devil in whatever form.

The prequel to the original “Exorcist” has been made:

This will be the 4th installment in the “series”. The 2nd one shouldn"t count though. It was terrible.
Right on! I didn’t even know this one was out! Thanks for making this post 👍

I’m with you on the 2nd one. It was just plain dumb.

But in Matthew 10:28 Jesus exhorts us “Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.”

This is not saying being aftaid of God – God does not actively destroy one’s body and soul. He gives us up to Gehenna when we refuse Him. Rather, Jesus tells us to fear the devil.

I will agree that it’s not right to live in fear … Jesus also exhorts us to be at peace. But respectfully fearing him who was once God’s greatest and most powerful creation – it’s only healthy I think.

original exorcist was my favorite movie… i’ve seen the midnight showing of that movie 3 times in the theatres… still scary after all these years!
(i actually have the theme music for that movie as my phone’s ringtone - i switch between that, the music from ‘halloween’ and the munsters theme song)
yeah, i love halloween, and i’m a practicing devout catholic. go figure… i love the campy, kitchy horror… i know its all bunk, hollywood productions… but it’s still a lot of fun.

I’m stoked about this movie! I have 1st and 3rd on DVD (the 2nd was lame) and I pull’em out every once in a while when I need a good scare. The first is still the scariest movie of all time for me, IMHO. I like all the scary boogey man shows. Not the gore/slasher stuff, rather…well, movies like this! Did anyone like the Amityville Horror movie?

By the way, I saw a documentary on A&E that said the book The Exorcist was based on a true story. Anyone else heard if that is true?

The term of fear could be misleading. I am no expert on scripture, but I do know that many words have different meanings when they are approached in their original language. I wonder if the word fear is different than the common English in this case. Anyone have a good answer on it? Are we to be “afraid” of the devil, or are we to have a fearful respect that Satan has power? I tend to lean toward the fearful respect side, as after reading stuff from Fr. Amorth, I have a hard time believing that a trembling fear of Satan is what we are after.

happened to me:
I went to a private catholic high school, i had a morality teacher in 11th grade who was also the exorcist for his congregation (based in europe) that over the course of my years at the school, i had become close to, sort of a mentor, if you will - we got to talking about exorcism and he said in a dry voice, “if you don’t believe in the power of evil, come to the rectory after classes today and ask for me” - so of course curiosity made me go, he pulled out a VCR tape, told me to just watch as they recorded hours and hours of exorcisms performed to document the very thing i was about to see, and on it was a little 7 year old girl having an exorcism performed over her by him and two other priests in 1986, linguistics professors counted over 30 languages she spoke fluently over the course of the 6 day exorcism, many were obscure south african regional dialects, middle eastern tribal languages, gaelic, native american and other obscure tounges she had no exposure to or experience with, the accents and inflections were perfect. she cursed and ranted about the power of evil in the worst language imaginable, spit at everyone and acted much like someone who wanted to destroy lives… it was simply evil. i watched about 30 minutes of this and was creeped beyond belief. i left and remember saying a rosary that night, i was scared *********" the little girl, after the 6 days, remembered nothing and continued to grow up speaking german, her native language. The mother told the priest she never spoke in another language again and showed no ill effects.

Oh ya! It’s true, very true, that’s what makes it just more than a scary movie - because it’s reality. I watched the Exorcist one night with my adult family members and a priest friend of ours. He told us that his Bishop uses the movie in the seminary to show and discuss how to do exorcisms.

I heard rats in the attic for a least 2 weeks!:bigyikes:

I think I will probably go see this new Exorcist movie - I like to know my enemy, that way I’m better prepared.

I have been told I’m a little on the morbid side - I also like to walk through cemeteries, read headstones and pray for the dead.! The older the cemetery the more fasinating! Souls who have been so long dead that they are long forgotten by this world and have no earthly concection and I ponder the fact I too will one day be just a name on a gravestone with no one on earth to care and what will my life have meant if I lose my soul.

"Ye souls of the faithful, who sleep in the Lord, Who yet are shut out from your final reward: O! would I could lend you assistance to fly From prison below to your palace on high!"

The exorcist was a good movie, the second sucked, the third was ok, I’m not sure if I want to watch this one though. But i was interested in what happened before all that. I may see it, but I’d have to rent it, my fiance won’t watch any of those movies at all. When it comes to real stuff like that, he’d rather not know. You should’ve seen him when I insisted on watching the Amnityville Horror…he was almost like a baby!!!

I’m the same, Mandi, I love cemeterys!! I walk through them every chance I get!!

I do not know if I would recommend The Exorcist to see how the devil works. There is a lot of hollywood in this movie, but a lot of it is true, unfortunetly. It is always within us to be fascinated by such activities, but I would advise great caution. Actually, I wouldn’t even recommend watching it. This can and may open you to the devil’s activity. You do not realize that an exorcism, really, is boring because the devil’s words have no life. It is so banal in its repetition. Why bother? The only thing that you could get out of the movie is the fact that the ouija board was played with and this became the gateway for the Evil One.

An exorcism is only for the spiritually mature…and even then. It is a battleground not to be tampered with. Read Jesus’ words…they have Life. I do believe in knowing your enemy, but, an exorcism will not give any insight at all. It is so much to the extreme that you would never be able to identify with it.

If you need to know how the devil works watch The Devil’s Advocate by Al Pacino. Now that is a true rendition of the work of the Evil One. Al Pacino did a good job of being the Evil One and I must say, I was impressed.

Blessings

I don’t think so shoshanna. The souls of the dead are no harm to me or anyone…it’s the evil spirits and demons and I don’t think that they would hang around a cemetry. I think they’d most likely be found near people since most long to possess.

I don’t remember this being in the movie - but you are quite right. I can not say enough against the ouija board. Do not, never, ever play this game. You might as well call the devil direct and say come on in! People think it is a joke, it is not.

Perhaps I have come off sounding to light regarding this subject, but your words are true, it might be of interest to note that priests have died doing exorcisms - that is how extreme this battleground is.

There have been quite a few movies as of late that have had an accurate protrayal of the devil - “The End of Days” with Arnold Schwartenegar (sp?) showed a devil that hated all, even those who considered themselves on his team. I was hoping that this message would come across to all those teenagers who think it’s cool to be a satan lover. - Unfortunately I think they are so engrossed with evil it goes right over their heads.

"Brethren, be sober and watch: because your adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about, seeking whom he may devour; whom resist ye strong in the faith"

No kidding, I agree with you. But from what I have heard, the Excorcist of NY said it is the most accurate depiction of an actual excorcism he has seen made and is pretty close to what actually happened during one. I’ve seen the previews for the new one, and it scared me, and it was just a preview.
