Please help! I’m studying exorcism and would like to conduct a sort of “man on the street” quick poll of anyone who strolls past this poll. Catholic only, please - I do not want to include Protestants in this poll.

Question(s): Do you believe and do not doubt that actual demon possessions and exorcisms are taking place today? Have you ever seen an exorcism with your own eyes (in person - television does not count)?

Please feel free to add any commentary you have, but I’m looking for one of four answers: 1) Believe and have seen, 2) Believe but have not seen, 3) Do not believe and have not seen, 4) Do not believe even though I witnessed an alleged exorcism.

Thank you Michael for pointing this out - I mean only to inquire on what CCC 1673 calls “a major exorcism”. I understand that an exorcism is performed during baptism.

THANK YOU!
{This is my first poll, so sorry if the polling mechanism gets screwy or doesn’t appear at all}

Believe and have seen.

If this is some sort of official poll…

I caution: Baptism carries within it an exorcism rite and so do other prayers a priest might use to break the hold of demonic on an individual.

Thank you, and I completely forgot to address that in my question. I mean only to inquire on what CCC 1673 calls “a major exorcism”.

lol. k. then in that case : i’ve voted for believe but have not witnessed.

Is this a “class study” or something you are interested in on you own?

Both, actually, RoseMary131. Personally, I had the perception that exorcisms had faded into a thing of the past and movies, but then I started reading news stories from the Philippines, Poland, Italy, and even the US that state the exact opposite. Meanwhile, I’m in a class at my congregation that is exploring major US religions - mainly answering the question, “What are the main belief systems around us?” Our goal is to just be better able to talk to our neighbors and know where people are coming from without just assuming we know what they think because we saw a movie on it once or we heard something from a friend who has a friend, etc. There are just so many religious “walls” in this country because we’re either afraid to talk to each other or we think we already know it all. I guess you could say I’m making an attempt to approach it with humble curiosity.

Glad you asked - good to meet you!

Believe, and hope to never witness.

Out of curiosity, how can one witness a major exorcism without being a priest or the victim?

I do believe in exorcism but I have never witnessed one. That said, when I told my friend that I believe in demonic possession he acted like I was nuts.

Svid2, I’m still very new to this and learning as we type. Can only these two be present? I see other posts from those who appear to be neither yet have witnessed. I don’t know - which is correct?

I have not seen an exorcism, but I do believe. I have experienced what I believe is pure evil twice, I can’t prove it , but I know it, in my bones.

I’m sure most of the work of exorcists is not covered in the news. Here is an article from 2010 on a priest who is an exorcist. The articles doesn’t cover exorcism, but I thought you might have an interest in that the Catholic Church actively has exorcists. Many Catholics in the pews may not even be aware of exorcists today.

Today Msgr. Mancini, 69, is the liaison for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the diocese. …As part of his work with the steering committee, he chaired a symposium on deliverance ministry in Houston, Texas. A book titled “Deliverance Prayer” was then published and sent to American bishops, urging them to appoint in each diocese a team of priests for inquiries about possible exorcisms. Msgr. Mancini currently continues to work as an exorcist for the diocese.

“I get one or two calls a week,” he said. "Many of these are situations involving cults. People who suffered abuse growing up in cults too. It seems the area around southern Missouri and northern Arkansas is where the most intense family occult groups are.

“You need the protection – you’ve got to be living in faith,” he said. “Once I became an exorcist, I realized the influence of the evil one. But Jesus conquers all of that.”

I love Msgr (Father) Mancini, a wonderful man and lively sense of humor. 👍

I believe, but have not seen one.

I did, however, have occasion to meet the exorcist upon whose exorcism the film “The Exorcist” was based. He was disinclined to talk about it, and I was cautioned against asking. His nephew, howeer, told a number of us the “real” story. Pretty hair-raising.

FYI, Jordan, there is currently a conference of Catholic exorcists being held in Tulsa, OK.

Thank you all for the (name removed by moderator)ut and information! I can’t recall and instance of my perception being this far off on an issue. Given the fact that only one out of the forty-something responses so far does not believe in demon possession, is this something that Catholics MUST believe? I understand that there are certain practices or teachings of the Church that laity have the freedom to disagree with, but then there are other tenets that simply must be believed (the deity of Christ, for example). Is this one of those?
