I know it is an article of faith that demonic possession can (and does) happen and that people have reported it happening from time to time.

I just find it so hard to believe that it really happens. Article of faith or not exorcisms almost seem in the category of Bigfoot or UFOs.

I believe there are exorcists… and people who claim they need exorcisms. But so often it appears (from what I gathered reading the Rite) that people who need exorcisms are just depressed or lonely and feel the priest and the procedure will help them overcome that.

But I don’t know, it just seems that since it never has been recorded or proven it might not really happen. Many exorcisms appear to end in the death of the victim too.

The only thing that makes me hold onto the possibility of them existing is all that crazy talk about Ouija boards!

Read Father Gabriel Amorth’s books. He was an exorcist in Rome for many years and passed away just last year. Exorcisms are for real, and yes, most people are mentally ill and need help but there are those who go through years of help and it doesn’t work, only to finally go through the Rite of Exorcism and find healing.

We recently attended a talk by a exorcist Priest. He said it’s rare in his experience for a real demonic possession however it does occur, he has witnessed it and performed the exorcisms.

He said the majority of cases either had mental issues or were suffering from a physical illness.

Before moving to an exorcism, every precaution is taken to make sure that the individual is not simply suffering from a mental illness. They see professional counselors, go on medications that should help resolve whatever mental illness seems closest to their symptoms, and just generally have to cover all their bases. Exorcisms are only performed when all other efforts to resolve the issue have failed.

As for recordings, there are recordings of Annelise Michel’s exorcism, and probably others if you look.

I echo ShanPO’s sentiment. You should definitely pick up that book.

^What did the Priest say he witnessed at the exorcism?

If it is real, and there really is a demon in the person it is probably one of the most awful things a human being can witness.

This is not a topic worth dwelling on or investigating to a great degree. I’d trust the Church attesting it exists, as we do when renewing our baptismal promises - yet, She refuses to publicize when the Rite of Exorcism is being performed. That silence says a lot. Don’t go barking up the wrong tree. 🤷

Satan wants us to believe just that. He wants us to not believe in him, demons, exorcisms and the like. While full fledged possessions are rare, and perfect possessions even more rare, they exist. Choosing not to believe offers no protection.

More common is demonic oppression and infestations [haunting] It is good that you at lest are wary of Ouija boards and the like as they are huge stepping stones to big trouble.

pax.

Christ is shown exorcising people in the Gospels. That is all that is involved in exorcism is seen there, where we see demons possessing people and demons being cast out of people. So I couldn’t say exorcism is against sense.

I will follow the advise of people here and try to put it out of my mind.

Funny thing. Every single time I have expressed an interest in exorcism and tried to research it heavily, My life has really gone down the crapper (or appeared to.)

Turns out that if one actually saw a real exorcism, it would not be “exciting” or “cool” just horribly sad, disgusting and depressing. Youd probably go mad from fear or despair if you saw it and were not in a state of grace

Perhaps Satan wishes us to focus on him.

On the contrary, Satan does his best work when his existence is ignored. When is the last time you heard a sermon about him? And when have you heard his involvement in the message of salvation, and the purpose of the coming of Jesus Christ. St. Peter stated “…that Jesus came to redeem up from the works of Satan” Jesus also stated(paraphrased) “…what king is there that does not contemplate the strength of his enemy so that he can better prepare himself for the conflict…” Also our faith teaches us that “…Satan is the ruler of this world” He uses his angelic powers against humanity and it’s weaknesses. We see these signs world wide. To know of Satan’s presence is to witness to Jesus Christ and His redeeming power, and sacrifice for us. Just to know his presence is not enough, but to know the full message of “Salvation” is to see it in it’s full perspective and to know Jesus Christ and His love for us. I have performed simple exorcisms before reliable witness, and for many it was a real “eye-opener”

Remember that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is itself an exorcism. There are simple exorcisms that the laity can perform for cases of demonic oppression or demonic influence. these involve blessings on people or places to “clear” them. One is NEVER supposed to attempt a full exorcism on a person – that is reserved for priests who have the authorization of their local bishop.
