When does it come to the point when a priest has to perform an exorcism? Why does this happen to people?

Well, it happens when a person becomes corrupt or inhabited by an evil spirit. Catholicism is the only known Christian religion to perform such an act. There have been countless stories about these events and some have been made documentaries, or hollywoods money maker (those are questionable, though, they may have occured).

I remember a documentary about the subject in one of my high school classes. They tend to occur when the person becomes corrupt spiritualy, mentaly, and physicaly. The documentary I saw dealt with a kid who pretty much had a falling from his roots (which may or may not have had an over all effect), and dealt with some dark arts. He did it with his grandma or aunt, not sure what they were to him. that person ended up dieing and the kid did something to contact his recently passed aunt(or grandmother). Not sure if it worked, but he ended up possessed. It was a nice film. I’ll try to look it up.

What do you mean “he did it with his grandma or aunt”?

That is not correct. I’ve seen fundamentalist religions, Orthodox religions, and Muslims all perform exorcisms on YouTube and I’ve read about them too. Pretty much every Christian religion believes in exorcisms in some way. Just put in the word “exorcism” or “exorcist” on YouTube and you’ll get everything. 😉

Where did you get that idea?

It happens in Orthodox and other Eastern Churches, as well as Pentecostals.

because I do not remember the lady’s relationship to the kid. he spent the night at her house and she was a relative, but her over all status is unclear for now. it was only one person that the kid acted in evil with, she was either his grandmother or aunt.

I remember both words being used, but not in description of the woman, so again I am unsure of her family status.

my appologies, but if they truly did such things, then the child of whom I spoke of would have gone to his own Chruch. He was Christian, but not Catholic. I am only speaking on what the movie stated, they tried Christian religions in helping, but was eventually pointed towards the Catholic Church because others knew too little of what was going on as well as unable to act correctly towards it.

“Muslim” have a wide variety of meaning; including the thought towards Christians being apart of that meaning as not every Muslim is Islamic. I did mintion Christian group too. Greek Orthodox was a branch of what? oh thats right Catholicism; the greek rite as it may be called? Since it once was appart of and hopefully will be again with us, completely.

p.s. dont believe everything on youtube.

These are not easy questions to answer and can’t be answered with a short reply. So, I suggest you read the wonderful book, An Exorcist Tells His Story. It will provide you with all the information you need. Father Gabrielle Amorth wrote the book and he is an expert, being the Chief Exorcist in Rome.

One thing that is not covered in the book is the phenomenon known as “victim souls” in which the person willingly goes through these kinds of trials to benefit others, taking in this punishment (as a victim) in order to free others. In this scenario, the possessed didn’t become possessed due to occultic activity or sin in their lives.

Many of the protestant denominations have fallen away from believing in possession. It’s not taught in the seminaries either, so the pastors have limited choices. They will point the people to the Catholic Church because they know that the Church still believes in them and practices them. It’s simply a matter of knowledge and experience.

There have also been Jewish exorcists, as told in the New Testament. All the Abrahamic religions perform exorcisms. I didn’t understand much of this last part of your post, sorry.

Exorcisms are performed when a person is possessed by a demon. The rite of exorcism may be prayed when a person believes they are being attacked by the devil, for example, it may be prayed in a person’s bedroom should they be experiencing frightening demonic nightmares.

Why does this happen to people?
A person becomes possessed when God permits it - for the person’s own good or the good of others. From the Catechism:
395 The power of Satan is, nonetheless, not infinite. He is only a creature, powerful from the fact that he is pure spirit, but still a creature. He cannot prevent the building up of God’s reign. Although Satan may act in the world out of hatred for God and his kingdom in Christ Jesus, and although his action may cause grave injuries - of a spiritual nature and, indirectly, even of a physical nature- to each man and to society, the action is permitted by divine providence which with strength and gentleness guides human and cosmic history. It is a great mystery that providence should permit diabolical activity, but “we know that in everything God works for good with those who love him.”
For a person who has strayed far from God, demonic possession or oppression may be the wake up call they need to get their spiritual act together. It’s possible that without this suffering they would continue to live in a way that would lead them to Hell.

In very rare cases, a person may experience demonic harrassment as a form of redemptive suffering. There was a case of a possessed holy person who lived during the time of St. John Vianney. The man’s name was Antoine Gray and his story is detailed in the book Evidence of Satan in the Modern World by Msgr. Leon Cristiani.

The Catholic Church distinguishes between major and minor exorcisms. Minor exorcisms are part of the Rite of Baptism, and are used during the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Any lay person can be deputed to perform minor exorcisms, while major exorcisms can only be performed by trained, ordained priest-exorcists. While every priest has the power to perform an exorcism, not every priest has the faculties to perform the ritual, and it can only be undertaken on the instruction of the local ordinary (usually the diocesan bishop or eparch), after a thorough medical and psychological evaluation of the subject.

On the other hand, anyone can “pray over” another person. If the person is thought to be possessed, the prayer would be to free them of possession. That’s the practice in Protestant and Evangelical faiths. Essentially they are performing a “minor exorcism” in Catholic terminology. However, the Rite of Exorcism (a “major exorcism”) can be performed by a properly ordained minister, which would mean a priest of a church recognized by Rome as having valid orders.

It is my understanding that a Muslim is a follower of Islam. The Mirriam=Webster dictionary defines “Muslim” as “An adherent of Islam”. Not every Arab is Muslim, and not every Muslim is an Arab, but every Muslim is an adherent of Islam.

Has anybody else seen the act of placing a plate and a full glass of water, turned upside down, on someones head and then hitting the glass. It’s supposed to trap the spirit in the glass. I saw it on one of those paranormal shows on A and E.

Yet another occult ritual being propagated by these ghost hunting shows.

I wouldn’t try that one at home, folks. You can’t “trap” a being that is pure spirit in something material.

Do you remember which one? Paranormal State?

In some Satanic cult rituals, they will infuse blood or wine with demonic spirits. Spirits can inhabit material things, just like they can inhabit human bodies. But this “ritual” that you speak of is certainly not a Christian one.
