Can anyone give me any tips on how to not expect anything from God? It would just make my life so much easier not to expect anything in from him.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe it’s a matter of adjusting your expectations instead of expecting nothing. For example, you can expect plenty of opportunities for holiness and to exemplify virtue. You can expect salvation and bliss provided you live a faithful life. You can expect that you can find some good things in your life to appreciate.

God isn’t a vending machine, the Lord is my shepard, I shall not want.

You should pray to God to reveal his will for you instead of just asking for things.

Start by looking at what He’s already done for you.

I spent some time with a man who had been homeless for about five years. He said; every night when I find somewhere to sleep, I reflect on my day and find several things to thank God for. This was a man who carried his home in a couple of bags.

Truthfully being thankful in bad times and good; is a way of recognising our need for God.

Don’t expect anything - and you wont be disappointed - I think that’s a military motto -

“It would just make my life so much easier - not to expect - anything - in from him.”

Would a father - give his little son - a snake - when he asked for a fish ?
Only the devil would do that.
Or give his little son - a stone - when he asked for bread ?

How do you know God is revealing his will for you? Is his will for us revealed just by how we are living day to day? But that can’t be because we have free will and how we are living day to day may be our free will and not God’s will.

How is God’s will revealed? I seriously would like to know.

Actually, the saints (like Therese of Lisieux) expected everything from God, and great things too! But these were spiritual things for the good of their and others’ souls. They never expected material or earthly goods.

Surely, you mean you don’t want to expect your next breath? or your eyes to blink? or the sun to rise in the morning?
I don’t know how not to expect things from God since he is the source of ALL???

That is why I said pray for him to reveal it to you. It is not always clear to us what he wants, ask him to make it clear. Of course yes, you do have free will, and you may choose to go against his will. I think that happens quite often actually.

Sometimes it has been revealed to me during a reading at mass, or something the priest says in his homily. It stands out somehow more strongly than everything else and I have a sort of aha! moment that applies to my life, or something going on at that time.

Mark, it sounds like you have been hurt deeply and you feel God has somehow let you down. You think it would be easier to put up a big wall between you and God and keep your heart numb and stone, so you can’t feel any more disappointment. I feel for you, truly. I’ve felt that way with certain people before. If you dont expect anything, then you can’t be hurt.

But cutting yourself off from God will only hurt you more. He loves you so much, but He wants what is best for you. Perhaps God knows that you have misperceptions about who He is and is using these trials to bring you into a real relationship with Him.

You need to learn more about who God really is and what He expects of you. Start reading the Gospels, over and over. Go to Mass as often as you can. Go to Confession and speak privately with the priest. Read good books about the Catholic faith. And above all, PRAY. Then pray some more. God has not abandoned you even if it feels like it. Your sorrows and miseries should drive you closer to Him. Don’t push Him away.

Mother Mary, I pray for Mark that he will come back to Jesus’ arms. Envelope him in your love. Guide him back to your Son. Jesus, I trust in you. Please fill Mark with an overwhelming sense of your love for him. Amen.

It would seem that we need to “expect” things from God. God is “unconditional love”-; expect that; Jesus said He forgives contrite hearts-expect that; and you can expect god to answer your prayers. these are just a few things.

Maybe it’s more about what you should expect from God. Jesus did not give us money, wealth, even happiness depending on the definition. What he gave us is himself, religion, and hope in everlasting life. Thats something we can expect. 😉

Just trying to get over the idea that God owes me something for my sorrows, tragedies and disappointments.

That was one of the nicest reply I have ever read. You spoke as though you knew right where he (OP) was coming from… Excellent advice… 🙂
