Hi,

Has anyone ever had an experience like this one?

I have been doing really well spiritually lately - My prayer life has been full, I have been fasting three times a week, and I felt that I had at least two moments of pure evangelism where it just seems like the Holy Spirit was using me.

But at the same time, or a little bit later, I have been exposed to people who just seem irrationally angry, furious, and even full or rage. And that fury and rage seems to be directed at myself, my wife, and my kids. Its almost like a spiritual assault on my family through various people.

Has anyone experienced something like this? Or perhaps I am reading too much into events?

Whatever your thoughts - please pray for myself and my family if you have some time.

God bless,
Ut

First up, are these people mentally ill?

Yes, I have.
If you’re fasting and praying like that, you’ll encounter spiritual assaults from time to time. But you can use these for continued growth towards Our Lord.

Yes, I have had this happen on a regular basis my whole life and it has ramped up ever since many of my fellow US citizens have chosen to make the last election their big excuse for engaging in an extended 2-minute hate (more like a 2-year hate at this point with no end in sight).

I am not sure if this is “demonic” or just an issue of people with problems in their own lives who become irrationally enraged when they see someone else having a nice, fulfilling Ed Flanders kind of happy life. There are also people in this world who identify specific targets, whether they are Nazis to punch or Catholics to harangue and harass or just individuals they don’t like for some reason, as somehow being worthy of hate and thus “OK” to bully and they proceed to take all their aggressions out on the target on the basis that the target in their mind “deserves” it. I guess these actions are demonic to the extent that the Devil motivates people to feel angry and upset and take it out on others.

I will pray for you and you in turn please pray for the people who act angry towards you. They need help. God bless.

All the times I felt I was closest to God and filled with His Holy Spirit, that was the experience I not only sometimes had, but had almost on a regular basis. It could be reading into events, but I know what my life was like beforehand. People really seemed to be angry the most when they saw me at peace, and especially when I wasn’t bothered by their anger, but rather showed patience and love towards them (which I address and admit to all readers, was not me but The Holy Spirit within me, God’s grace and my desire and yes to His Word)… It made them lash out more. (it wasn’t just adults either but some older children) Its actually extremely creepy, and from those experiences you could see (not visually, but spiritually-like with the heart) those demons that were eating them up inside and what sins they were latching on to. Makes one more sympathetic towards the person. You ask for prayers, but really… PRAY for them!!! (Do God’s Word- love your enemies) You may be afraid of it, but praying for them with love, and fasting, helps free them, though sadly they can choose do wrong again. Pray the rosary for them!

Because I understand this… Prayers for you as well… though I’m not sure you’d want mine… I’m sorry to say I’ve fallen back and have many doubts, currently. Despite that, I know that this phenomena is a real eye opener and solid evidence of The Faith, spiritual world, etc.

Something else I have noticed is that some people act as if they don’t want a person around if that person happens to love God and practice the faith. The people I have experienced just cut the connection. Nobody did anything overtly wrong like Satanic Rage, but they just distance themselves.

Also, I used to have a boss who seemed to show Satanic Rage. She would holler at me and use every foul word you can think of.

Whenever I feel that things are going along very nicely spiritually I can almost count on some sort of spiritual aggression or discrepancy coming into my life.

I completely agree with this. I am the “religious one” in my family because I love God and practice the Faith. I remember once I actually left a day long family event on a Sunday to take my two daughters to Mass and my mother was so affronted. They were not dying to go anyway as young children but my Mother actually said " They don’t need to go to Mass, how ridiculous. This is a family event and they want to see their grandma" even though we were coming back for the rest of the ENTIRE DAY.

I consider this Satan using people to attack those in the Faith most assuredly. As one Protestant Pastor said “Satan doesn’t mess with those he has, they are already in his grips, he’s looking to add to his Church in hell.”

You have my prayers and remember this:

Matthew 5:10 / NAB

*Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

St Michael the Archangel defend us in battle…

Mary.

Sometimes the radiation of grace from the sacraments (Communion or Confession) will repel people who are not in grace. Or after prayer, adoration, rosary - you might find people attacking you. They sense the peace radiating from you and it cuts into their conscience and hurts them. You’ve done nothing wrong - on the contrary, you’re doing good.
Sometimes this is just a psychological reaction from people, but it’s always safe to accept that the Devil is behind it. He wants a world where sin is the comfortable norm. Any effort at spiritual growth and coming close to God is something Satan hates and he will do lots of things to trouble that.
Of course, it’s not just rage and hatred - it can often be some temptations that are thrown at you that are simply hard to imagine could happen. People being very disruptive, rude, provoking you to react – and of course for men (can’t speak for how it is for women) we know the kinds of temptations that will come out of nowhere and be simply incredible to believe anyone could do such things.

Sometimes I wonder if I’m experiencing that… The last seventeen months have been pretty intense spiritually, including a lot of Mass and Adoration, although God certainly hasn’t been using me for anything – I have no work, no ministry, and the Church has almost completely severed me from my husband.

But I can relate to the inexplicable rage: my next-door neighbor, in his late 80s but pretty with-it as far as I can tell, has come over to my house twice in the past 12 days to yell at me about the property line. Not-so-conveniently, my husband, who is a peacemaker and has a talent for calming people down, is 3000 miles away hiking the Andes of Ecuador and is rarely reachable. I keep telling the neighbor we’re not going to fight anything if his surveyor says he gets to take some of our grass. But he had a dispute with a former owner of our property before Husband and I were born, and he just won’t hear me. At one point I even sat down on the porch steps: make myself smaller, let him stand over me, maybe he’ll “hear” that with the more instinctive parts of his brain, since his ears aren’t making any connection. Didn’t work.

I seriously can’t make the pieces of this add up. I’ve noticed some very mild confusion in him while he’s yelling, but nowhere near enough to explain this perfectly irrational behavior with a “dementia” label.

Since I dropped off my husband at the local airport twelve days ago, I’ve had to replace a flat tire and a broken windshield (within five days of each other), spend three hours on the phone and $225 to get a medication to my house in time, spend two days cleaning up a minor financial mess brought on by someone else’s inattention, and field two raging visits from my neighbor.

Still, as odd a cluster as that seems, I am very, very reluctant to attribute it to some kind of spiritual resistance. Bad things happen, and they tend to come in waves. So far I haven’t found that the appropriate responses change at all if it’s natural vs. supernatural: be patient, stay calm, look to Jesus. Be patient, stay calm, look to Jesus. Laugh if there’s any way to manage it. Cry if there isn’t. Just don’t do both at the same time, because that’s not a safe place to be!

…I mean really, what am I going to do, sprinkle my neighbor with holy water next time he comes over to yell at me? I’m sure that would go over really well…

I have an idea for the neighbor: instead of holy water, get a record or something that would really tick him off. There’s one from the 1960’s that came out, and I just laughed my head off at it. It goes something like, “They’re coming to take me away, ha, ha” Then it goes on to describe the mental hospital, like “basket weavers,” and “where things are pleasant…”

At the time, I did not know what the song really meant. Upon hearing it again on a video, it occurs to me that the person singing it is upset because his dog ran away AGAIN.

I heard that song has been sort of banned because of the mental problems this guy supposedly faces with his dog running away. But if you have it on for when the neighbor comes over, maybe it would give him a hint. He is driving you nuts!!!" A laptop computer with the video on it could really freak him out.

I had a neighbor call the police on me once because my dog barked on occasion. Not fun. The police gave me a warning and I was walking on eggs for a long time, even got a collar for her to help stop her barking. (She is now up there with the other dogs. She died in her sleep 4 years ago.)

First up, are these people mentally ill?
One of the has a history of flying off his hing verbally - but never at me or my kids. But yesterday, he was out of control. Everything my kids did would set him off to the extent where I felt like I had to confront him and I eventually had to leave with my kids. It was disturbing.

Agreed. I can’t expect to walk this faith without experiencing the sorrowful mysteries from time to time.

Agreed - There is often a psychological explanation for evil behavior that may mitigate a person’s responsibility. History is full of moments where you look back and it seems hard to understand how people could get so out of control - Nazi Germany being a clear example.
I will pray for you and you in turn please pray for the people who act angry towards you. They need help. God bless.
Thank you. I appreciate it as a fellow Ned Flanders. 🙂

I was looking at my friend and seeing the anger boiling over in his eyes. It was pretty intense, but also pretty irrational. I’ve rarely seen that kind of out of control behavior for very little justification. Obviously I stood up to him - my kids were involved - and there were others around to help diffuse the situation, but honestly, I don’t know what would have happened if the others weren’t around.
Because I understand this… Prayers for you as well… though I’m not sure you’d want mine… I’m sorry to say I’ve fallen back and have many doubts, currently. Despite that, I know that this phenomena is a real eye opener and solid evidence of The Faith, spiritual world, etc.

Hi Mary and Arizona Fat Gir,

Oh I experience this every time there is a baptism, first communion, or confirmation in my family. That underlying hostility or begrudging friendliness. It makes me want to cut them off entirely, but I know that isn’t what the Lord wants. My issues are with my own family and parents. Somehow, I have to balance their hostility with the commandment to honor my parents. It isn’t always easy.

And Arizona , I have also experienced the cold shoulder from those who find out I’m religious and have a big family. Definitely an acceptable form of social ostracism.
I consider this Satan using people to attack those in the Faith most assuredly. As one Protestant Pastor said “Satan doesn’t mess with those he has, they are already in his grips, he’s looking to add to his Church in hell.”

Thank you for the suggestion Arizona. 🙂 I, um, took a slightly different approach. The day after the second verbal attack, I went to his house with some cookies and to invite him to come to confession with me. I knew he was Catholic, but didn’t know how much he kept up with it after his wife passed away, and at his age I thought it might be a good idea to check. His family is all a little wacky, so I thought it likely no one would be helping him in any meaningful way.

He wasn’t there, but his son was, and it sounded like the older man is still active at the local church. That’s good; not everyone can tolerate that particular church, and I’ve spoken to many people who have just given up on the faith because they don’t have cars and won’t go there. But at least I’m pretty sure my neighbor is doing okay with the sacraments, even if he does keep dropping by my house to rage at me…

I live in solitude and have a Christian psychotherapist who I tell all my religious experiences. I feel so alienated from the rest of the world due to my religious beliefs. The most hurtful experience is to be alienated by my daughter due to my religious beliefs.

Robert,
So sorry you feel so alienated especially from your daughter. I will pray for you and also pray that at some point perhaps a relationship with your daughter can be restored.

Mary.
