If anybody would like to share their experiences, please do!

My father and I had a good experience with them. Were the CDWDS a commercial establishment, they would get an A+ in the JD Power and Associates custmer service rating. The staff is professional, helpful and open. Even though it took two letters, several phone calls and a personal meeting with the Secretary to the CDWDS himself, the end result, two years later, was most positive in my dad’s case.

When my father wrote our bishop, he sent the letter, along with copies of the correspondence he sent to his former pastor, via certified mail, return receipt requested. The bishop never acknowledged the letter, let alone, returned the green certified receipt. We sent the CDWDS a letter, including copies of the correspondence that my father sent both the bishop and his former pastor, along with a copy of the certified receipt from the post office. About three weeks later, my father received the orange receipt acknowledgment. The week after that, my father received an actual letter from the CDWDS acknowledging his letter and informing him that they would be looking into the matter.

Unfortunately, I now have my own issue to resolve within the diocese. To date, the CDWDS has been most helpful with me. One of the officials reminded me that my anonymity is protected.

While I do not necessarily recommend calling them (unless you don’t like sleeping), writing them via a physical letter with a real signature is your best bet.

I sort of had you in mind when I started the thread 😃

This gave me an idea… I will write the Bishop. I had thought for a while that I would have to physically schedule a meeting… which frankly terrified me! A letter sounds awesome 😉 I will literally draft it tonight. God Bless 🙂

Sorry Doanli, I should have posted that :o

Anybody else?

Well, I brought up several liturgical abuses with my pastor. He dismissed all of them as unimportant.

Example
Me: “Father, according to Redemptionis Sacramentum the use of glass chalices is reprobated”
Father: “Yes! Reprobated means encouraged.”
Me: “No, it doesn’t mean that Fr.”
Father: "Ok. But, I really don’t care what the Church says about it. It’s not a big deal."

Similar converstations were had about him adding his own prayers to the Mass, rewriting and paraphrasing the prayers of the Mass, and countless other abuses. Each time his response was “I don’t care what the Church says. It’s not a big deal.”

During this time another parishoner was questioning him about these same abuses. Apparently he brought them up alot more often than I because Fr. became incredibly hostile towards him. For instance during a talk Fr. was giving on vessels and vestments this fellow asked the person next to him if he could borrow his pen. Fr. stopped his talk and began yelling "I don’t care what you say! Cardinal Arinze says I can use a glass chalice if I want!

My coversations with this priest were always a bit more cordial.

So, I put all of my concerns in writing and quoted the relevant passages from the GIRM, Redemptionis Sacramentum, and other documents and sent it to the pastor. I never received a response. Several months later I wrote again and received no response.

So, I sent a letter to the bishop asking for his help with the liturgical abuses in the parish. I sent a copy of the letters I has sent to the pastor. After several months without having received a response I wrote again. Several more months passed and I did not receive a response. And then it was announced that the bishop would be retiring for health reasons. Figuring the bishop had more pressing things to worry about I did not write a third time. Around this time the pastor became a bit hostile towards me. He wouldn’t use my name. He would always refer to me as “the scholar” in a very snide manner. I suspected that the bishop had sent him a copies of my letters.

We received a new bishop. I waited several months to allow him to get settled before writing him about the liturgical abuses plaguing my parish. I sent copies of my letters to the pastor and to the former bishop. After several months I received no response. I sent another letter and, you guessed it, many months passed with no response. Then the new bishop developed some health problems and I decided not to write him a third time.

After his recovery, I know of 2 people who have personally spoken to the bishop and asked him for help with liturgical abuses in their own parishes. To each of them he replied that he would look into the issues and put a stop to the liturgical abuses if there were any. Over 2 years later nothing has changed in either or these 2 parishes or in my own. A priest recently told me that when he himself brought up the issue of liturgical abuses with the bishop the bishop told him “there are no liturgical abuses in this diocese.”

So, I know the next step is to write to the CDWDS but I am not quite prepared to do it. Being ignored by my pastor and 2 different bishops has been quite disheartening. It feels almost like they are fighting against me. And I don’t know if I have the strength right now to advance “the fight” to the next level. The pastor has been in the parish for a decade and has recently asked the bishop for permission (and received it) to remain there until retirement - another 11 years. So, I have little hope that a change of pastors will remedy the situation. This whole thing has been very painful for me for many years. For now I have just been attending Mass at other parishes in order to avoid the liturgical abuses.

You should write to them. Really!! Benedictgal and so many others have said how wonderful they are and that they are on your side. Think of how much that one extra step would mean to God 🙂

They are ready and waiting to shut down any liturgical abuse - but they need people to tell them about it!

I’ve lots of abuses of the mass. The one that really got my dander up was when the priest skipped the words of consecration. That’s right, the priest didn’t say “this is my body” and “this is the cup of my blood”. The bishop still hasn’t done anything about that.

Regarding the post about the priest saying he could use a glass chalice because Cardinal Arinze says he can. I don’t personally think Cardinal Arinze would say that. I think the priest in question may have been mistaken. Cardinal Arinze is very conservative.

Actually, this is what he said back in 2003:
In the United States, we have adequate income, why would we have to use glass or porcelain for the precious Blood and the Body of our Lord on the altar and not gold?
Oh, for the vessels. Ah! Actually, the liturgical laws forbid [this]. This is actually for bishops and priests to work out, because you cannot work out all that. But the liturgical laws are laid down about what type of vessel will be allowed at Mass.
Glass is forbidden. Yes, Forbidden. And anything that can break.
That does not sound like an affirmative statement to me. Redemptionis Sacramentum came out a year after that question and answer session was done.

After seeing several instances of liturgical abuse by my priest in my church, I had to write to my bishop. (Didn’t think of writing to the Congregation.) Several others before me had written to the bishop but to no avail. This priest would endorse pro-choice candidates during the homily, reveal confessions to others during Mass (including my own!), not allow anyone to receive the Blood of Christ or consecrate enough of the Body of Christ for everyone to have (not quite sure if this is an abuse), and numerous other occasions. This is in addition to his often inappropriate behavior. Only two out of 20 people have ever received a response from the bishop. The bishop will send back the letter to the offending priest. Anyone who sends a letter is treated with such a vile attitude. They are called out in Mass. It’s very disheartening to go to Mass at my parish. So many parishioners have left. Some travel to Mass at other locations (with the closest being 30 minutes away), but most have just stopped coming to Mass or are attending worship services at a Protestant church. Collections and pledges to Catholic Charities have gone down. The bishop has done nothing to alleviate our situation. Now granted, the bishop has only been here for almost two years. Most complaints were registered with the former bishop; however several have complained with the current bishop. I just don’t know anymore. I know we come to Mass to worship God, but if the actions by this priest go against God, I could on a shallow level understand why people are not attending Mass at my parish. It does not feel like we are worshipping God at Mass in my parish. Please pray for my priest, bishop, and parish family. I will also pray for those of you considering writing to your bishops and the Congregation. Thanks and God bless.

From experince I can tell you responces vary. Most important is knowing where your Bishop stands of the abuse before you contact him, so you can be prepared.

Next you want to be well informed on what the Church teaches and be able to provide evidence of both th abuse and the CC Teaching.

If your going to make an appointment; take someone as a wittness.

If its verbal [worst option] have someone at least hear what your saying. Read from a script or at least extensive notes.

If it is writting, send to the Bishop, the priest and keep a file copy.

Don’t be shocked if you get “verbally abused.”

**Matt. 5: 11-18 ** [11] "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you. "You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.”

If your Bishop is Obedient to Rome, and you make your case briefly and charitably and supported by facts and wittness’ if possible; you’ll like the result. If any of these factors are missing or minimal; you may not like the results; indeed may just be ignored.

May God Guide your actions, Come Holy Spirit Come.

Love and prayers,
Pat

Violating the seal of confession is a very serious offense. I’m wondering what exactly you meant by “revealing confessions to others, including my own”. Did the priest mention you by name or say anything to make others aware that it was you that he was talking about? Or did he mention sins that are commonly heard in Confession without giving a hint of who confessed? I do not believe the latter is violating the seal of confession.

You do have legitimate grounds to file a complaint with the CDWDS. If you, or anyone else has written a letter to the bishop, please include this in your correspondence with the Congregation. Remember, though, to keep it as emotion-free as possible. Just report the facts. They will guard your anonymity.

If your Bishop is not part of the solution HE IS PART OF THE PROBLEM. Find a different parish even if it means driving a bit. YOU and YOUR FAMILY ought not abide this behavior.

Pay the price for doing what is right.

If as yo say the priest is revealing [BE SURE THIS IS ACCURATE sins by naming the sin AND THE SINNER] he cn be and ougt to be removed from the priesthood. This is a GRAVE and MOST SERIOUS ABUSE, but both the sin AND THE SINNER MUST BE NAMED. Tis is not something to fool around with. EXTREMELY GRAVE and serious accusations.

He has done both. In my case, he revealed my name and problem after Holy Communion. 😦

He has revealed people’s names in their sins. Unfortunately, he revealed my name and problem. Thanks for the advice, PJM. You sound like a different priest I’ve been going to. God bless.

This is a very serious issue - you really must do something and it appears that a letter to both the Archbishop (I presume you are in the Mobile Archdiocese from your profile - excuse me if I am wrong) and the CDWDS is in order. Be sure and send it Certified Mail to both parties. (I would also include the Nuncio - this has to get traction fast!) Include, as has been stated, all prior correspondence. Include the date and Mass if there were multiple Masses. Be very factual. I would also get a list of names of people from your parish who would corroborate under oath what you have said - it may come to a Church trial.

The seal of confession is absolute. I assume you have not raised this issue before with your Archbishop. If you have raised it in writing already, the AB could face some real problems, too. This cannot be allowed to go on.

Good luck, have courage and God bless you.

How do you write to the CDWDS? Who do you address your letter to and what is the address?
