Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Yesterday I posted a thread, which quoted Pope Emeritus (Benedict XVI, formerly Cardinal Josehp Ratzinger). He wrote in the book, Mary, The Church at the Source:
The image of the grieving Mother, who in her suffering had become sheer compassion…
What an astounding insight! I continued to read a bit more from this book, and wanted to post again some words for all of us to ponder as we draw closer to Holy Week and the solemn commemoration of the Passion Jesus. Pope Emeritus, then Cardinal Ratzinger went on to write the following:
In Bernard of Clairvaux, we find the wonderful statement that God cannot suffer, but He can suffer with (be compassionate). With these words, Bernard brings to a certain conclusion, the struggle of the Fathers of the Church to articulate the newness of the Christian concept of God. Ancient thought considered the passionlessness of pure intellect to be an essential attribute of God. It proved difficult for the Fathers to reject this notion and to think of “passion” in God. Yet in the light of the Bible they saw quite plainly that Biblical revelation…upsets [everything] the work had thought about God…We could say that the Cross of Christ is God’s compassionate suffering with the world…
… The Pieta completes the picture of the Cross, because Mary is the accepted Cross, the Cross communicating itself in love, the Cross that now allows us to experience in her compassion the compassion of God.
May the Holy Spirit find our hearts open to receive, as Mary did, the Cross God offers us.May we not only “Behold our Mother” as Jesus told us from His Cross, but by His Grace, may we live as she did, experiencing in her compassion, the compassion of God.
