Is it possible for one to expiate the temporal consequences of sin while in a state of sin? I understand it is impossible to accrue merit without being in a state of grace, but is it still possible to expiate?

For example, let’s say a man in mortal sin commits a crime, offers no confession, but serves 10 years in prison. Has he not discharged at least some of the temporal consequences of his sin?

In my own case I wonder about the many years spent in mortal sin prior to my conversion. I was dreadfully sick for many of those same years. I understand suffering in sin can merit conversion, but can it also expiate sans merit?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Peace of Jesus Christ that surpasses all understanding be with you.

Trying to convey something He put in my heart after having much the same concerns.

Its good to be concerned with cooperating with God’s Grace thus
participate in The Redeemer Jesus’ expiation of our sins.
Its seems to me, though, we should strive to surrender to His Strength,
always bending our wills to His Mighty Will to be more Holy as He is HOLY.
So, I wouldn’t be too much concerned about time because,
through accepting our crosses we participate in His Cross, and thus,
with true compassion for others He bestows indulgences on us.

What am I thinking, saying, and doing beyond my own needs?
I’m learning to ask myself, what can I do for others?
After some discerning, I strive only to cooperate with His Grace,
thus, less concerned about temporal punishments. And actually,
with gladness looking forward to every tear being wiped away,
and the reward of Heaven.
