Explain Catholic burial practices?

I have family in a Catholic cemetary. This cemetary is enclosed by a public cemetary. People who are buried in the city cemetary (non Catholics) are buried in plots running east to west, while the Catholic cemetary patrons are buried north to south. Is there a particular Church tradition as to why this is?
 
If it’s in Rite of Funerals, I’m missing it. How old is the cemetery? Do you think it’s a form of orientum? Maybe it’s the way the ground shifts.
 
I know in local Lutheran cemeteries people are buried facing toward the east–facing the rising sun. I’m not sure if Catholic cemeteries follow this practice.
