Explain the mormon thinking . . .

A woman I know who is a Mormon, of sorts. Drinks coffee and booze. One of her adult children died last week. The obit. referred to “Heavenly Father” which is Mormon. I don’t think this young woman who died is a “practicing mormon”. Can someone explain their understanding of the “fate” of the deceased? Not asking for a judgement on her soul just the mormon “theology”. thanks

Mormons do not pass judgment on the “fate of the deceased”. Only God knows.

NO, NO, NO !!! LDS have 3 heavens. Very few go to “OUTER DARKNESS”, the LDS “hell”. The worst of all sinners go to outer darkness, those who have rejected their Mormon faith. The three heavens, in order from lowest to highest are: Terrestial, Telestial, Celestial. They are the kingdoms of glory. Celestial Kingdom is where the very faithful LDS go. LDS teaching of heaven and hell is not the same as the bible.

first judgement in LDS theology occurs immediately when you die. if in a “state of grace” (mormons don’t have this but there is something close) they go to “paradise” if not they go to “spirit prison”. these are temporary holding areas somewhat like purgatory. those in paradise do the work of the lord somewhat like catholic saints. one of their main tasks is to preach the mormon gospel to the spirits in prison. those who were not able to be preached to on earth (if they accept the mormon missionaries in spirit prison) move on to paradise when their “sacraments” (not the mormon term but it describes the concept) are performed for them on earth in a temple.

then there is the final judgement. those who had a full knowledge of the “truth” of the mormon gospel and willingly rejected it are cast out into “outer darkness” (mormon hell) with the devil to be ruled over by Cain. those who were bad but don’t qualify for outer darkness go to the telestial kingdom. it is better than anywhere on earth and is ruled over by the holy spirit. those who were basically good but did not live as temple worthy mormons (and completed their temple ordinances) go to the terrestrial kingdom which is even better and is ruled by Christ. those who completed their temple ordinances and remained worthy go to the celestial kingdom. this is the best place and is ruled over by “heavenly father”. there are three degrees in it though. the lower degrees are servants to the highest. the highest degree of glory is called exaltation and men become Gods themselves and their wives will have spirit children that will populate the worlds that these exalted men will create and rule over.

mormons believe this has always been and always will be in a never ending chain of Gods. this is called eternal progression. mormons who completed all of their temple ordinances and fell to temptation will be still be exalted after the final judgement IF they shed no innocent blood and were not apostates. some think apostasy results in outer darkness but that is a minority. most believe they go to the telestial kingdom. which kingdom is dependent on your works over the whole of your life.

Thank God for the Catechism! I was raised LDS and even served a mission but I was taught and believed doctrine slightly different than majick and Mom of 5. It seems that LDS doctrine on these issues vary from place to place. There seems to be no standard belief on many issues.
