Explaining to a Protestant why we confess to a priest

My granddaughter and I came into the Church last year. I am still learning about the faith, but I am so excited to finally be Catholic. However, my daughter, a non-practicing Protestant, had a question: Why do we need to confess to a priest when Jesus died to save us from our sins? I tried to explain but failed miserably. I need a simple explanation for her. I tried to explain what confession does for me, but she still didn’t understand why we need a priest.
