This is definitley a headscratcher:

I fell in love with the RCC through a series of what my family calls unfortunate events. I come from a fairly devout Methodist home, yet they are pretty much clueless on what the Methodist church teaches and they are fervently against Catholicism. I began dating a Catholic girl and wanted to convert her to Christ with my Methodist arguments but something happened. My gram said we would never last because she was Catholic. Well that set off a spark and ever since I wanted to learn about the faith and why we wouldnt work. Well, it turns out the RCC is GREAT!!! Everyting I could ever want. No wishy-washy morals or ethics. No contradictions! And a direct lineage to Peter. WOW!!! Where do I sign up? HAHA. But like I said my family thinks it is my girlfriends doing but I claim it is Gods. Any thoughts?

Find the RCIA program at your nearest parish and jump on the barque of Peter! 😃

Congratulations on your journey. I agree with Scott, go to the RCIA at a parish near your home. Also go to the Mass, if you have not done so yet.

What specifically about the Church is your family against? Maybe you can correct some misconceptions.

Well I do go to Mass with my girlfriend when I can and go while here at college. My family has known about my feelings for more than a year. I go regularly as I can. They just hate the idea of Mary, Purgatory, and I find myself to have a knack for apologetics but my words fall on deaf ears. They think Catholics worship the Pope, and all I can do is sigh. I just finished reading Unabridged Christianity which is one of my favorite reads so far. My other favorite is Crossing the Tiber and Surprised by Truth, plus I have my own Catechism and whatnot. The point is, what church has 2,000 years of history dating back to Christ himself. Another cool thing is the fact that we are fufilled Jews which dates back even farther. I think the fact that the only thing wishy-washy about the Church are the liberal members such as John Kerry. Go look at www.umc.org then go to the questions in the top left hand corner and then to beliefs and social page and find abortion. Tell me how wishy-washy they come across. I swear I could get better answers to my moral and theological questions from a Magic 8 Ball…can you say frustrated.

Could you say it is both?

It is difficult to judge how serious the gap is (or will become) between you and your family. I hope the words of two recent popes can be of some help - although I suppose you quoting popes to your parents would probably not help.

“That which seperates us as believers in Christ is far less than that which unites us.”
-Pope John XXlll and Pope John Paul ll

perhaps you can share the idea without necessarily sharing the source. Perhaps the fact that it is true will be enough.

Good luck

peace

I wouldnt say my girlfriend directly is pulling me towards Rome. Indirectly yes by association but it was never even a concern in the beginning of the relationship. Throughout she has said she will stay with me, Protestant or Catholic. But I believe that this is my Emaus Road. She indirectly brought me closer to Christ than I would have ever known. And my Gram’s comment on Catholicism is really what sparked it. I am a logical thinker…I used to wonder if God exists and I came to the conclusion yes, since something cannot come from nothing. And Christian becuase of all the love and mercy, yet justice (and alot more). And since I was born Methodist it was easy to be but isnt that all Protestants. Easy to be and live as. Yet Catholicism keeps you on your toes making sure that you do your best at all times to please God. So you have to give some things up maybe. Its ok, we’ll live. I basically came to the conclusion with my brain first the the Catholic Church is the true church then my heart followed. So, here I am at a crossroads ready to turn away from the schism-happy Protestants and embrace the fullness of the faith, Christs ONE TRUE CHURCH!!! Protestants, IMHO, want to beat a dead horse. Not all mind you, but a great deal just want to show the world how their pastor is better than everyone elses, even in their own denomination. Yet, Catholics have a shepard to guide them towards Christ. So…I guess I am tired of the glib arguments Protestants make for themselves and against the Church. People just need to face facts. Period!

Welcome, I pray you stay the course; join RCIA and get baptised. I did this year and am so glad I did. I see more and more how true the CC is. I am HOME!
