They are a way of offering prayers up from my understanding.

What is the significance of candles? Interesting, and that is the only significance. That was obvious :banghead:
In case no one has mentioned this - and they may have - pick up the book The Orthodox Way by Bishop Kallistos Ware (once known as Timothy Ware).

When I became Orthodox this is one of the books the priest suggested that I read.

I have since left the Orthodox church - but, I am sure there are many people on this forum who will answer your questions and and are answering your questions - certainly with much more knowledge than I ever had.

Bless you on your journey.

What is the significance of candles? Why are they placed in sand? Sometimes they are placed at odd angles. Why?
Sand is easy to stick candles in, holds them up well, and is easy to clean out. Sometimes people miss and stick them in at odd angles. 🤷

Also, Kallistos Ware wrote The Orthodox Church. You might like reading that too, if you haven’t already. (It may still show as having been written by Timothy Ware).
