Explicit Images in Public

Friends,

I live in an university dorm with a common area. My three neighbors all have put up pornographic images on their doors fronting the entrance (thus I have to walk past them every day). I avert my eyes, but today I tore one down out of sheer annoyance.

Did I commit a sin by “looking” at the image?

Venial sin at most. Confess it next time you go, but certainly no mortal peril here. One might even argue that your act of removing it negated any effect of sin.

It annoys me too, that we must forge on while trying to avoid this imagery from postings and billboards to immodestly dressed women. Confession helps maintain a pure heart and mind, even for those evils we do not willingly participate in.

You looked at it. You didn’t try to look at it, you didn’t seek out porn…
You cannot help what your eyes happen to see, it’s hardly a sin if you didn’t want it.
Heck, you tore one down. No worries, there.

I don’t know whether you need to confess accidentally looking at it, but it seems like you might want to think about confessing your destruction of personal property (depending on details of course… if it was just a print out or something, and not a poster that cost the person money, etc).

this may violate sexual harassment laws, especially if this is a public college, but if nobody complains, nothing will be done. Find out what the procedure is to lodge a complaint

Of course.

But according to Church doctrine just being born human is a sin (e.g. Original Sin) so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
