Exposition Question

I know there are alot of smart people here so I’m confident I’ll get a good answer.



Like many who grew up in the late 60’s or 70’s in “modern” churches, I never really seen an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until some started bringing it back a few years ago in my area. Now, I see more of it.

I often wonder tho…

If a priest can touch the host during consecration, why the long shall (sorry don’t know the name) that he wraps around it to move it around or make the sign of the cross. Why not bare hands?

Does anyone know the history

I read that the priest does not show his hands to show that he is not blessing the people but Jesus is. I got this off a website so i dont know how reliable it is. I do know the cape looking thing the priest wears is a cope. The thing over his shoulders which he puts on to hold the monstrance is the humeral veil.

Hey a shot in the dark but I believe that the cope ultimately denotes reverence for Jesus Christ in Exposition. I can remember that when I was a vimp, the master of ceremony had us were a similar covering to handle the Bishops and Archbishops mitre and crossier. Thanks and God Bless.

I think you mean humeral veil. If you were a vimp you would use something similar to a humeral veil.

:yup: This is what our priest has explained to us. Other blessings come from the priest acting in the person of Christ. This one comes from Christ Himself in the Blessed Sacrament.

Are you talking about the monstrance? The big gold radiant cross in which the pix (I think that’s what it was called - the glass orb/cylinder which contains the Eucharist) is put? Benediction is not a Mass and the monstrance can be used to house the Eucharist in chapels with perpetual adoration.

The luna is the glass orb/ cylinder you described.

A** pix ** is a small round (usually metal) container used to take the Blessed Sacrament to the sick or homebound.

Thanks, Amy. It’s been a long, long time since I assisted at Benediction. Even though mine is a cathedral parish, Benediction is highly uncommon. It was a weekly occurrance when I was a kid.
