Extended Sign of the Cross

I was baptized catholic but never practiced it. I recently found God and I’m attending church regularly. I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this, but how exactly do u do the extended sign of the cross? I see it done in church. I just want to make sure I’m doing it correctly. When doing it on the forehead, mouth, and chest, is it done up to down then left to right or right to left? Sorry if it’s confusing. Thanks in advanced.

This is prior to the Gospel when you do little crosses on your forehead, mouth and chest (mind, lips and heart).

The motion should be the same as you are doing the usual sign of the cross, up-down-left-right.

In the Latin Church we sign left to right. However, that is not dogmatic or even a rule so left-handed people and anyone else who feels comfortable signing right to left may do so.
 
Wow, just realized I’ve been doing it backwards all this time. 😊

It’s going to be hard to switch. Feels all wrong as I try it out.

There is no backwards because there is no rule on this. You sign whichever way you are comfortable signing.
 
I believe most Eastern and Orthodox cross themselves up - down, right - left. (with the thumb, indexfinger and middle finger placed together to represent the Trinity) Is that correct, Constantine?

up down left to right (or right to left 🤷).
 
I put three fingers together to make the sign of the cross and usually extend all the way down to my belly lol.
 
When Making the sign of the Cross, it should be ,up,down,left and than right. Amen
 
To be clear, when I said I was doing it backwards, I meant I was making the small cross on forehead, lips, and chest backwards. That’s what this thread is about, not the normal sign of the cross, right?

Drat you, Aelred Minor, I bet you’ve had loads of people sitting drawing crosses on their foreheads trying to remember what they usually do. I’ve tried it so often that I’ve forgotten what I normally do. I THINK it’s backwards, right to left, as the other way seems so odd. But you’ve got me so confused now!
